Strings that held me

She did not realise that the hermit watched her. When her station came she got off. Her phone started to ring. She looked at it and then observed her surroundings. It was a fairly large station. She looked around and waited.

She waited for half an hour and then she walked off to one side and called for a taxi but was unable to get one. She even called her mother many times but it was busy. After twenty calls finally her mother picked up the phone and frowned at her.

Mother: “where are you now, it’s already half an hour, how long do you want us to wait for you.”

This made her angry. She clenched her fists and pressed her teeth hard against each other then said slowly.

Maria: “And do you know how long I’m standing here, for half an hour I’ve been calling you but the phone’s always busy, I don’t even have an umbrella now and it’s so hot here, it’s already 12..... It’s me who should be irritated.”

As she finished her mother was astonished.

Mother: “Why are you standing there hasn’t your brother reached there?”

Maria: “If he really was here then I would have been there by now, don’t you think”

Mother: “Alright, alright, I’ll send him there directly. O, buy something to eat, you haven’t had breakfast yet right.”

Maria: “I can’t now I’m saving money for something so I can’t waste money”

Mother: “I know what you want to buy we’ll buy it for you we are not short of money yet so eat something. I’ll send him right away. I’ll hang up now”

Maria: “Alright”

The phone hangs up. Then she laughs and smiles at herself and sighs saying “Why is there only one people who don’t use me”

She waited for another half an hour and got on the car. Her brother sat quiet. She remained silent for the whole journey. After about half an hour they reached. Her mother was waiting outside the house. As she got there she hugged her and took her in.

It was a house rented for wedding. It was her eldest cousin’s wedding. She looked around and found it alright. Though the rooms were not clean but the cemented courtyard was. She took a chair and sat quietly enquiring her surroundings. Her mother had left her by then to fetch something to eat. She returned with a plate full of sweets and a water bottle. She handed them to her. Maria was on an empty stomach for the whole morning so she had already lost her appetite.

Maria: "O please, its noon already, I don’t want to eat anymore.”

Mother: "You Donkey don’t spout nonsense. I don’t care even if you have lost your appetite, you have to eat this.

Her mother hurriedly stuffed a cake into her mouth and placed the glass of water in her hands. No sooner had she finished than her mother put in more. Now she gulped them up with large amounts of water. As the third one came, she made a cross sign with her hands yet her mother put in more. Her mother went away to dispose the plate whereas she sat there pushing down the cake with water. Her mother came back after washing her hands. She had her bags with her. She called her out and both got on the car. As they got on Maria started to speak.

Maria: "knock knock, is there any Old lady here?"

Mother: "You don’t have to remind me, I know I’m old"

Maria: "Where’s Dad?"

Mother: "O he didn’t come. You know how he is?"

She was particularly scared of her dad. So when she heard he was not there she got into the mood to joke.

Maria: "Aaaah......"

Mother: "Stop joking...I know he’s not here so you’ll take you true form."

Maria: "Aaaaa...Mom come on, He isn’t here so please let me take this opportunity."

Mother: "Shut up"

Maria: "You’re totally humourless"

Mother: "Of course......I gifted it to you. So that you are over humorous."

Maria: "Aaaah.....Okay, Okay."

Mother: "Oh where is your brother? Did he not come with you?"

Maria: "I don’t know"

She looked out regardless of the scenery. After a while she fell asleep. Her mother woke her up when they reached. She went in almost half asleep. Her aunt greeted her and laughed out saying “Oi..... Are you still sleeping?” Maria nodded her head without thinking. Her aunt smiled again and took her to a bed. She obediently went and fell on the bed. She entered deep slumber as soon as she fell. Her aunt laughed again saying “You can sleep peacefully here, no one will disturb you.” She was already in her dreams.
