The moment Celeste’s fingers brushed against the cold, silver key, a violent shudder ran through the cavern. The very walls seemed to groan, ancient dust falling from above as if the place had been waiting for this exact moment to wake up.
Orion grabbed her wrist, pulling her back with urgency. “Don’t.” His voice was sharp, but Celeste could barely process his words. The key pulsed beneath her fingertips, sending a strange energy through her. It was calling to her, whispering in a language she didn’t understand—but somehow knew.
Then, the whispers stopped.
A silence so deep it felt unnatural filled the space. The golden lights in the carvings above flickered, growing dim as a gust of wind—impossible in the closed cavern—swept past them, carrying the smell of decay.
Celeste’s breath caught. She turned to Orion, her eyes filled with questions. He was already looking past her, his expression unreadable, but his grip on her wrist tightened.
Something was coming.
From the depths of the cavern, a sound emerged—a slow, scraping noise, like claws dragging across stone. It grew louder, closer, until Celeste could no longer convince herself it was just the wind.
A shadow moved.
Not just a trick of the dim light—something real, something solid. It stretched along the cavern walls, detaching itself from the darkness, forming before them. Limbs took shape first, long and twisted. Then a torso, lean and unnatural. The head was last—a hollow void where a face should be, with two gleaming silver eyes locked onto Celeste with an unsettling intensity.
The whispers returned, only this time, they weren’t in her head.
“You do not belong here.”
The voice was dry, hollow, yet it sent chills down Celeste’s spine. She stepped back, but the creature didn’t move closer. It simply stood, waiting.
Orion shifted beside her, his breathing steady but his posture tense. “Celeste,” he whispered low enough for only her to hear. “Listen carefully. We don’t run. We don’t show fear.”
Her heart pounded, but she nodded.
The creature tilted its head, as if amused. “You have something that belongs to us.”
Celeste looked down at her hand. The key, though cold, now burned against her palm, as if it had awakened something inside it. She clenched her fingers around it, even as the weight of unseen eyes pressed against her.
Orion stepped in front of her protectively. “You can’t have it.”
The creature let out a wheezing, broken laugh that made Celeste’s stomach twist.
“Then we will take it.”
The cavern erupted into chaos.
Shadows tore from the walls, twisting into monstrous figures with long fingers and wide, grinning mouths. The air crackled with dark energy as they rushed forward.
Orion reacted instantly, his hand glowing with golden light as he struck out, sending one of the creatures flying. But there were too many. They moved like smoke, reforming the moment they were torn apart.
Celeste barely had time to scream before something cold wrapped around her ankle, yanking her backward. She hit the ground hard, the breath knocked from her lungs as the creature loomed over her. The silver-eyed being was closer now, watching her with eerie curiosity.
“Little star,” it whispered, reaching out a long, clawed hand. “You cannot escape what you are.”
Celeste’s body froze—not from fear, but from something deeper. An understanding she didn’t want to have. The whispers had been calling her for so long. Now, she was finally listening.
Orion’s roar broke through the haze. He lunged forward, tackling the creature away from her. They crashed against the stone, Orion’s golden energy flaring as he struck again and again. The creature shrieked but didn’t vanish like the others.
It was stronger.
Celeste scrambled to her feet, her hands shaking. The key pulsed harder, almost guiding her. Use it.
Her mind screamed at her to run, but something told her she couldn’t. Not now. Not ever.
She took a deep breath and raised the key.
The moment she did, the cavern trembled again. The golden carvings on the ceiling flared, beams of light shooting down, surrounding her. The creatures shrieked, pulling away from the sudden brightness, their shadows twisting violently.
The silver-eyed being turned its gaze to her, and for the first time, its expression changed.
Fear.
Celeste felt power rush through her, overwhelming and electric. The key burned against her palm, but she didn’t let go.
Orion, panting, turned to her, his eyes wide. “Celeste—”
The light exploded outward.
A force so strong it sent them both flying. The creatures screamed, their forms dissolving into darkness as the cavern walls trembled, cracks forming along the stone.
And then—
Silence.
Celeste lay gasping, staring at the ceiling as the last glow of golden light flickered and died. The key, now dull, slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the stone.
Orion groaned beside her, pushing himself up. His eyes met hers, searching, questioning.
Before either of them could speak, a new sound filled the cavern.
A slow, deliberate clap.
Celeste’s blood ran cold as she turned toward the source. Standing at the entrance of the chamber was a man, tall and dressed in black, his presence as heavy as the creatures that had attacked them.
But he was no monster. No shadow.
He was something much worse.
Orion stiffened instantly. “You.”
The man smiled, a cruel, knowing smirk. “It’s been a long time, Orion.” His gaze flickered to Celeste, lingering. “And you… you’re finally awake.”
Celeste’s breath caught, her pulse hammering as a cold dread settled deep in her bones.
She had survived the monsters.
But the true nightmare had just begun.
