Life 101 - Season 1, Episode 9: A New Path
After their exam disaster, the girls sat in their hostel, deep in thought.
Sandra sighed. "We gats change course, but we no fit pick nonsense wey our parents go kill us for."
Amaka nodded. "Theatre Arts go make my papa disown me."
Ebere laughed. "If I pick Theatre Arts, my mama go carry cane find me for this school."
Tolu rubbed her chin. "So wetin we go choose now?"
There was silence.
Then, Gift spoke up. "Wetin una sabi do well?"
Ebere snapped her fingers. "Zoology!"
The girls looked at her, confused.
Sandra: "Ebere, why Zoology?"
Ebere smiled. "Because we sabi animals! We don see all kind animals for our area since we small. Goats, chickens, even bush meat!"
Blessing's eyes widened. "Na true! We sabi animal wahala pass anybody."
Tolu clapped her hands. "I fit even talk to dog for my street."
Amaka laughed. "Sandra, remember say you fit catch any chicken wey run?"
Sandra grinned. "Na me be the chicken warrior."
The girls burst into laughter.
Gift smiled. "Zoology no bad. We no go suffer like for Mass Comm."
The girls all agreed. Zoology was the best option.
Changing Their Course
The next morning, they marched to the school administration office to request a course change.
The admin officer, Mr. Ojo, looked at them through his glasses. "You say you want to leave Mass Communication for Zoology?"
Ebere: "Yes sir. We love animals."
Mr. Ojo sighed. "Hope una sure? Because if una change, una no fit go back o."
Sandra: "We sure pass anything."
He shook his head, stamped their forms, and handed them their new course documents.
"Welcome to Zoology," he said.
The girls cheered.
Breaking the News to Their Parents
That night, they called their parents one by one.
Ebere’s mum: "Ebere, why you no tell me before?"
Ebere: "Mummy, no vex. I no wan suffer for Mass Comm."
Sandra’s dad: "Zoology? As long as you no go do Theatre Arts, I go support you."
Blessing’s mum: "At least na better science course. No wahala."
Tolu’s mum: "You sure say you no go end up in bush with lion?"
Tolu: "Mummy, lion no dey Benin."
Amaka’s parents: "Make sure say you graduate, no matter the course."
Surprisingly, no one shouted at them. Their parents just wanted them to do well.
First Day in Zoology Class
The girls entered their new class, excited.
The lecturer, Dr. Musa, walked in and greeted them.
"Welcome to Zoology 101. Who can tell me the difference between a reptile and an amphibian?"
Ebere raised her hand confidently. "Sir, reptiles get dry skin, but amphibians dey wet-wet."
Dr. Musa smiled. "Correct!"
Sandra nudged her. "E be like say this course go sweet."
Tolu whispered. "Better than failing exam."
Gift grinned. "We go all graduate together."
The girls felt happy for the first time in a long while.
They had finally found their place.
