The rest of the day passed quickly. Skylar couldn't stop sighing, remembering that they had agreed to meet after classes. They exchanged glances during every break, although he avoided getting too close, because every time he did, a lot of people gathered to watch them, as if they were some kind of celebrities at the school.
That made him nervous. He knew that Carter hated being too affectionate in public, as if everyone else was waiting for the right moment to see them fail, to be able to gossip about how they couldn't keep their hands off each other. For the same reason, Carter had already told him in the past that they should avoid spending so much time together at school.
"Sky, don't make that face. We'll have time for ourselves before or after classes, but it stresses me out to be together like we're some kind of student show," he had sighed, clearly annoyed. It irritated him to have to remain impeccable all the time, as if a single mistake could destroy his image forever.
On that occasion, Skylar didn't reply. For him, walking hand in hand with his alpha was something natural. He imagined them both walking down the hall like celebrities holding hands, smiling dazzlingly, drawing sighs from the public. But if his alpha disliked it, it was his duty to listen and make things easier for him.
His heart beat strongly every time he remembered that they would soon be together. He could barely concentrate in class.
Kelly watched him carefully. Since he returned to the classroom, everyone was whispering about how Carter had brought Skylar by the hand. The omegas, in general, sighed for Carter; seeing him walking with his boyfriend was quite a spectacle. No one could deny that they were made for each other… no one, except Kelly.
Every day she became more convinced that Carter wasn't the best for her friend. Not because they didn't love each other, but because, over the years, she had seen how Carter raised a wall between them. Skylar seemed immune to that. He always found a way to justify his actions or words. For Kelly, it was like watching a tired marriage: her friend, the obedient husband; Carter, the weary husband.
Deep down, Kelly felt that Skylar deserved better. A sincere love, a future where he could fend for himself. But she also knew that any negative comment about Carter provoked conflict. Therefore, she had chosen to remain silent and simply be there for him, when things got complicated.
"The bell is about to ring. I guess we'll see each other tomorrow. Sky… you know that I appreciate you a lot. What happened today… I don't want to interfere more than necessary, but sometimes I think that Car—"
Skylar stood up before she could finish. There was an unusual hardness in his gaze.
"Kelly, I don't expect you to understand how complicated a relationship can be. Carter and I may have differences, but if I've learned anything, it's to keep my place. I'll ask you to do the same, for the sake of our friendship. After all, you have no idea what it feels like to have a boyfriend. You've never had one."
Kelly's eyes widened, incredulous. Skylar had never spoken to her like that. He had hurt her.
She stood up and left the room without saying a word. Skylar watched her go and knew immediately that he had crossed a line. For a moment he thought about going after her, apologizing… but the time he would have with Carter was too short to waste. So he hurried out, in the opposite direction.
As expected, Carter was already waiting for him in his usual spot. Skylar approached almost skipping with joy and gave him a radiant smile.
"I've missed you so much!" he exclaimed, throwing himself into his arms.
The alpha's face went from surprise to a kind smile. He placed a light kiss on his forehead and commented on how busy he had been with his exams.
Skylar felt like he was in heaven. Finally they could be together, without misunderstandings. That's what their relationship was like when they were alone. That's why he wasn't discouraged by Carter's slights: he knew that no one knew him like he did. They had grown up together. There were no secrets between them. Their first kiss, the first caress, the first time they held hands… it had all been with him.
However, there was something he had never told Carter. Although his first real kiss was with him —and it became more and more intense each time—, when things went beyond kisses, he felt a tingling in his stomach that left him breathless… and also confused. He knew what "going further" implied, how babies were brought into the world, but he didn't feel ready.
One afternoon, Carter accompanied him home after class, as they often did. In the middle of a heated kissing session in his room, Carter unbuttoned his shirt, revealing his small cherries. Skylar gasped, disoriented, his mind clouded by kisses.
"Should we go further?" he wondered.
Before he could answer himself, the door burst open. His mother came in with several bags, which fell to the floor at the sight of the scene.
Carter stood up quickly and Skylar, with a red face and swollen lips, straightened himself up as best he could. The marks of the kisses were still visible on his neck. His mother looked at them, stunned. The alpha took the opportunity to say goodbye hastily and flee.
Skylar felt abandoned, but what worried him most was what his mother would think. He expected screams, maybe a slap… but none of that happened. She just asked him to wash his face and change his clothes.
Then, she took him to an exclusive maternity clinic. In the car, Skylar played with his fingers, unable to find a way to break the silence. He checked his cell phone. Not a single message from Carter.
Already at the clinic, they were greeted by a doctor with a friendly face.
"Good afternoon. I am Dr. Lilian Brown, obstetrician. I also give talks on responsible sexuality," she said in a warm voice.
For an hour, she talked to him about the beginning of intimate life, the use of condoms, risks, diseases, the use of patches and more. Skylar knew the basics, but he hadn't anticipated so many complications related to his second gender.
His pheromone gland was not yet mature. It would be around the age of 18, when he had his first heat. If he forced it before, he could have fertility problems, even develop a recessive omega state.
The doctor insisted: his health should be protected, and his partner should understand that. She recommended talking to Carter… or bringing him to the consultation.
Skylar almost fainted from embarrassment. He would rather die than bring Carter to that place.
Afterwards, his mother took him to an elegant coffee shop. They sat facing each other. Skylar didn't know what to expect. Was she disappointed? Annoyed?
"Honey, I was young too. I know what it's like to love your alpha madly," she said calmly. "But like everything in life, there is a time and place for everything."
"Mom, I know I got carried away, but don't think badly of Carter. I promise you it won't happen again," Skylar said, lowering his gaze.
His mother watched him calmly. She wanted to take care of the trust they had, but also protect him from irreversible mistakes.
"Baby, I'm not upset. I'm worried. An omega's virtue is their most precious treasure. Even in the best families, gossip flies, and a damaged reputation is hard to recover. I'm not saying Carter doesn't respect you, but he's an alpha. And alphas… sometimes they don't think with their heads," she paused, uncomfortably. "Anyway, you must arrive at marriage with your virtue intact. Like a respectable omega, from a good family."
Skylar sighed and nodded. From that day on, he couldn't help but think of his mother every time the kisses became intense. He jumped like a spring from Carter's arms. He never told him what happened. He felt ashamed, hurt… but he kept it in that mental box where he hid everything uncomfortable. There would be time. They could reach the end… when they were a married couple. He would be patient. It wouldn't be long.
