The Unseen Chain

Ji-Hoon’s pulse raced as the weight of the mirror’s revelation crashed into him. His hands trembled violently, still clutching the door handle, but the door was stubborn, refusing to open. The voice from the mirror—his own voice, or something that echoed it—repeated over and over in his head, like an oppressive mantra.

“You are me. And I am you.”

He felt dizzy, like the ground beneath him was spinning, his breath shallow. The air in the room was thick, charged with a presence that wasn’t entirely human. The man in the mirror grinned again, his face now almost fully formed, but Ji-Hoon couldn’t tear his eyes away from it. He wanted to scream, to run, but something rooted him to the spot.

It took him a moment to realize the truth: this wasn’t just a reflection. This was his past, staring back at him with cruel familiarity.

His entire life had been a lie. The woman he called his mother, the friends he had known, the memories he had fought to preserve—they were all fabrications.

Ji-Hoon’s mind raced as a flood of images began to fill his head. Flashes of his childhood, broken bits of memories he couldn’t quite place, moments that had seemed out of sync—pieces of a puzzle that never fit. And now, this man in the mirror, this other version of him, was the missing piece.

The reflection tilted its head, as though studying Ji-Hoon, sensing his growing realization.

“You always knew, didn’t you?” the mirror-man said with that same, haunting smile. “You’ve felt the truth, but you were too afraid to accept it.”

Ji-Hoon opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The weight of the situation was suffocating. His mind struggled to process what was happening. Who was this man? And why did he look like Ji-Hoon? Was he a twin, a lost relative, or something far darker?

The mirror-man’s eyes gleamed with an unsettling gleam.

“I was there all along. In your dreams, in your thoughts. You couldn’t see me, but I was watching.”

The walls of the room seemed to shrink, as if the space itself was closing in on him. Ji-Hoon’s heart pounded in his ears. He had to get out. He needed answers, but every path seemed to lead deeper into confusion and terror.

Suddenly, the reflection stepped forward, its movements unnatural, like it was fighting against some invisible force. Ji-Hoon instinctively stepped back, bumping into the shelves behind him. The photographs on the shelves swayed, falling to the ground with sharp, echoing sounds.

One picture frame shattered upon hitting the floor, and Ji-Hoon froze. Beneath the broken glass was another image—a group of people he didn’t recognize, standing together, smiling, as if captured in a moment of happiness. But there was one thing that stood out—the man in the mirror was there, standing with them.

Ji-Hoon’s breath caught. The man in the photo was smiling, but it was the same distorted grin from the mirror. This was no coincidence. The man had been in his life all along.

And then, something even more chilling occurred. Ji-Hoon’s eyes flickered to the man in the mirror again, and he realized—the man was standing where Ji-Hoon had been just moments ago. His reflection was not static. It was moving with him, mimicking every motion, like it had already known what Ji-Hoon was going to do next.

The man in the mirror spoke again, his voice now deeper, almost otherworldly. “You’ve been carrying this burden for so long. The question is, what will you do now?”

Ji-Hoon’s hands clenched into fists. The truth was unbearable. But he wasn’t just going to stand there and let it consume him. No, he would face it head-on.

“What are you?” Ji-Hoon managed to whisper, his voice hoarse with fear.

The man smiled wider, his grin stretching unnaturally across his face. “I am your past, Ji-Hoon. The piece of you that was left behind. The part that was erased, hidden in the dark.”

Ji-Hoon’s knees buckled beneath him, but he fought to stand, pushing through the terror. Erased? He couldn’t understand. His whole life had been built on this false reality. His mother, his childhood friends, everything—was it all just a lie? Had they all been complicit in some grand deception?

His fingers grasped at the pieces of broken glass on the floor, and as he touched the shards, he was suddenly hit with a rush of images—his mother, standing beside the man in the mirror, smiling, but her eyes were filled with sadness. And then another flash: the same man, this time with his arms around a younger Ji-Hoon. Tears streaked down Ji-Hoon’s face. He wasn’t sure why—whether it was anger or grief, but the emotions were overwhelming.

It was then that he felt a shift, a change in the room. The air crackled with energy, and the broken pieces of glass began to move, twisting and turning like they were alive.

Suddenly, the mirror-man’s image wavered, like the reflection was beginning to distort. The man’s smile faltered for a brief moment, before he hissed, “You shouldn’t have seen that.”

Ji-Hoon backed away, his eyes glued to the shifting reflection. It was warping, changing, as though the mirror itself couldn’t hold the dark truth anymore.

In that instant, Ji-Hoon made a decision. He had to get out of there. No matter what.

With a primal roar, Ji-Hoon slammed his fist into the mirror, shattering it completely. The room was filled with the sound of cracking glass, a deafening shatter, and then… silence.

For a long moment, Ji-Hoon stood in the darkness, breathless, his chest heaving as he stared at the fragments scattered across the floor. There was no man in the mirror anymore. No reflection. Just broken pieces.

But something still lingered in the air—something unseen, like a shadow waiting for him.

He didn’t know what was real anymore.

But there was one thing Ji-Hoon knew for sure.

He was not alone.

“In the end, the truth can only be hidden for so long. Once you break the mirror, the reflection always follows.”
