Chapter 12: The Confrontation
The pieces of the puzzle clicked into place in Shin’s mind, each one a sharp shard of glass piercing his heart. Kenji’s quiet intensity, his subtle possessiveness, his calculated approach to Xander – it all made sense now. Shin had been blind, so consumed by his own feelings for Xander that he’d failed to see the danger lurking in plain sight.
He felt a surge of fury, hotter and more intense than anything he’d felt before. He wasn’t just angry at Kenji for betraying him; he was angry at himself for being so naive, so oblivious.
He remembered the party, how Kenji had lingered near Xander, how he’d smiled at him with a look that now seemed sickeningly familiar. He remembered the way Kenji had looked at him, a mixture of pity and triumph in his eyes. It was all a game to him, a cruel, calculated game.
He knew he couldn’t let this go. He couldn’t let Kenji get away with it. He had to confront him, to make him understand the pain he’d caused.
He grabbed his jacket and stormed out of his apartment, his steps fueled by rage. He knew where Kenji lived, they'd hung out there a few times. He didn't hesitate; he went straight there.
Kenji’s apartment door was slightly ajar. Shin pushed it open and stepped inside. Kenji was sitting on the couch, looking at his phone. He looked up, his eyes widening in surprise as he saw Shin.
“Shin? What are you doing here?” Kenji asked, his voice carefully neutral.
Shin didn’t answer. He just stared at Kenji, his eyes blazing with fury.
Kenji shifted uncomfortably. “Is something wrong?” he asked, feigning innocence.
Shin laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. “Is something wrong?” he repeated, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “You ask me if something’s wrong after what you did?”
Kenji’s facade finally cracked. He stood up, his expression hardening. “What are you talking about?” he asked, his voice challenging.
“You know exactly what I’m talking about,” Shin said, his voice rising. “Xander. My birthday. Everything.”
Kenji smirked. “So you finally figured it out,” he said, his voice laced with arrogance. “Took you long enough.”
Shin’s fists clenched. “How could you?” he asked, his voice trembling with emotion. “How could you do this to me? I thought we were friends.”
Kenji shrugged. “Friends? You really thought we were friends?” he scoffed. “You were just… convenient. Someone to hang out with when Xander wasn’t around.”
“You knew,” Shin said, his voice barely a whisper. “You knew how I felt about him.”
Kenji nodded. “That’s why I did it,” he said, his voice cold. “You were always so focused on him, so blinded by your feelings. You never even noticed me.”
“And that’s why you decided to hurt me?” Shin asked, his voice rising again. “That’s why you decided to take him away from me?”
Kenji shrugged again. “He’s happier with me,” he said simply. “He deserves someone who appreciates him, someone who sees him for who he really is.”
“And you think that’s you?” Shin scoffed. “You think you’re the one who deserves him?”
“I know I am,” Kenji said, his voice filled with conviction.
Shin’s anger reached its peak. He lunged at Kenji, grabbing him by the collar. “You’re pathetic,” he snarled, his voice filled with rage. “You’re a jealous, manipulative, pathetic excuse for a human being.”
“Why?” Shin screamed. “Why Kenji? Why? You knew how much I cared about him. You were my friend. How could you do this to me?”
Kenji didn’t answer. He just smirked, a small, cruel smile playing on his lips. And in that moment, Shin knew that Kenji wouldn’t ever give him the satisfaction of a real answer. He knew that Kenji’s actions were driven by jealousy, by resentment, by a deep-seated need to hurt him. And that realization was perhaps the most painful thing of all.
