Evelyn didn’t sleep that night.

Even after returning to the Everleigh estate, her mind raced with everything Leon had said. The black rose, the burned mansion, the secret her family had buried.

Evelyn moved through the ballroom gracefully, dressed in a deep sapphire gown, her mask of elegance perfectly in place. She smiled, nodded, exchanged pleasantries—pretended everything was fine.

But she wasn’t fine.

Because he was here.

Leon Valenciaga stood near the grand staircase, dressed in a black tailored suit that made him look both dangerous and untouchable.

What the hell was he doing here?

Evelyn’s breath hitched as their eyes met across the room. A knowing smirk tugged at Leon’s lips, as if he had been waiting for her to notice him.

Before she could react, he started walking toward her.

No. Not here. Not now.

Evelyn turned swiftly, heading toward the balcony for fresh air.

But the moment she stepped outside, a voice murmured behind her.

“You’re avoiding me, princess.”

She tensed. Slowly, she turned to find Leon leaning against the marble railing, looking entirely too comfortable.

“How did you even get in here?” she asked, keeping her tone even.

Leon smirked. “I have my ways.”

Evelyn crossed her arms. “You’re playing a dangerous game, showing up here.”

Leon took a slow step forward. “You’re the one who shook my hand, sweetheart. Or have you already forgotten our deal?”

Evelyn exhaled sharply. “I haven’t.”

“Good.” His golden eyes flickered with something unreadable. “Then let’s get to work.”

Evelyn frowned. “Right now?”

Leon leaned in slightly, just enough to make her heartbeat quicken. “The answers you want? They’re closer than you think.”

She swallowed. “What do you mean?”

Leon glanced back toward the ballroom. “Your father isn’t the only one with secrets.”

Evelyn followed his gaze—and her blood ran cold.

Because standing near the center of the room, speaking with a group of powerful businessmen…

Was a man holding a black rose lapel pin.

Evelyn’s hands clenched.

Leon’s voice was a whisper against her ear. “You see him, don’t you?”

She nodded, forcing herself to breathe.

Leon smirked, his voice dripping with quiet amusement. “Shall we crash the party?”

Evelyn turned to him, her pulse racing.

For the first time, she realized—she wasn’t just in this mystery.

She was deep in it.

And there was no turning back now.
