The air around them seemed to vibrate, charged with an energy that sent a shiver down Kaelen’s spine. The door before them continued to open slowly, revealing a dark passage that stretched deep into the earth. As it creaked open, the mist swirled in erratic patterns, as if alive, pressing against the edges of the entrance, refusing to allow any escape.
"Do you feel that?" Mira asked, her voice low but tense.
Kaelen nodded, his eyes narrowing as the mist continued to pulse. "Something’s in here with us."
The whispering voice from before still lingered in his ears, echoing in the silence. "You should not have come." It was like a warning… or a command.
"Too late for that," Kaelen muttered.
Mira drew an arrow but kept it in her quiver for now. She was tense, her instincts alert. The whole area felt… wrong.
Kaelen stepped forward cautiously, his boots crunching against the dry ground beneath. Every step felt like an intrusion in this quiet, forgotten place.
The door groaned as it opened fully, revealing a large chamber beyond. The walls of the cavern seemed to pulse with faint blue light, the source coming from deep cracks in the stone. Something about the way the light flickered made it appear as though the walls were breathing.
At the far end of the chamber, a pedestal stood, bathed in the eerie glow. And on the pedestal, there it was—the system fragment. It pulsed with power, its crystalline surface shimmering with swirling black mist.
Kaelen’s heart skipped a beat. "It’s right there."
Mira looked around warily. "Are you sure it’s safe?"
Before Kaelen could respond, a new voice interrupted, this one sharper and filled with disdain. "Foolish."
The mist swirled again, coalescing into a shape. A figure emerged from the darkness, a tall and gaunt being draped in robes that fluttered like shadows. The air grew colder as it approached, and Kaelen could feel the weight of its presence.
The figure’s face was obscured by a hood, but its eyes—gleaming from within the shadows—locked onto Kaelen. The voice came again, colder and more sinister this time. "You come for knowledge, but knowledge comes at a price. All things come at a price."
Kaelen gripped his sword tightly. "Who are you?"
The figure tilted its head, the motion smooth and predatory. "I am the keeper of what should remain forgotten. And you are too late to stop what has already begun."
The temperature dropped further, and the ground beneath them seemed to tremble. The mist grew thicker, wrapping around Kaelen’s legs, threatening to pull him down.
"Kaelen, stay focused," the system urged. "This is a trial."
Kaelen took a deep breath. "What do you want?"
The figure’s lips curled into a faint smile. "I want nothing. But I must ensure that the balance is kept. This fragment is not for you."
Mira stepped forward, pulling an arrow from her quiver. "We’re not here to negotiate."
The keeper raised a hand, and the air cracked like thunder. "Then you will pay the price for your ignorance."
Suddenly, the ground beneath Kaelen’s feet gave way. He leapt back instinctively, but the mist surged up, catching his legs and pulling him into the darkness.
Mira reached out, but the shadowy figure raised its hand again, and she was thrown back, slamming into the stone wall with a painful thud.
Kaelen struggled against the mist’s grip, feeling the cold tendrils wrap around his body, pulling him down deeper. The deeper he sank, the more distant the light became, until he was engulfed in total darkness. The whispers grew louder, echoing in his mind.
"You should have listened."
"You cannot escape."
The voice of the system broke through the chaos. "Kaelen, you must fight. The price is not physical. It is the mind that must resist."
Kaelen’s breathing quickened. He could feel his resolve slipping as memories he had buried deep inside began to surface. His past life—his failures, his regrets, the trauma he had tried to forget—flooded his thoughts like a tidal wave.
"You have failed."
"You are nothing."
He struggled to push it all away, focusing on the one thing that had driven him forward: Elara.
"I will save her," he whispered through gritted teeth. "I will not fall."
With that resolve, he gathered his strength, calling upon the divine energy he had learned to wield, pushing back against the suffocating mist. The shadows writhed as his energy pulsed outwards, fighting the darkness that sought to claim him.
The mist recoiled, and the keeper let out an unholy shriek as the mist withdrew, releasing its hold on Kaelen.
Kaelen landed heavily on the ground, gasping for breath. His muscles were weak, but his spirit was unbroken.
The keeper stood still, its eyes flickering with something like surprise.
"Impressive," it said quietly. "But the price remains."
Kaelen’s eyes burned with intensity. "I don’t fear the price. But I will take the fragment."
