The steady hum of the taxi filled the air as Amara and Nina sat side by side, the city lights casting flickering patterns across their faces. The rain had subsided, leaving the streets gleaming under the streetlights.
“So… Oxford, huh?” Amara teased softly.
Nina chuckled. “Oscar, actually. But yeah, living digitally forever does sound about right.”
“You’ve been gone a long time,” Amara said quietly.
“Yeah. I missed this place, though. And you,” Nina admitted. “I was planning to stay with you for a bit, if that’s okay. Just until I figure things out before going back.”
“Going back?” Amara frowned.
Nina’s smile wavered. “There’s still stuff I need to deal with over there.”
Amara nodded, choosing not to press further. The ride continued with laughter as they reminisced about their childhood — shared pranks, late-night storytelling under blankets, and summers filled with mischief.
By the time they reached home, their bond felt stronger, as though the years apart had only deepened their connection.
Later that evening, they sat on the balcony, cans of beer in hand. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of rain. Nina leaned back against the railing, her gaze lost in the horizon.
“I thought I had life figured out, you know?” Nina’s voice was softer now.
Amara took a sip of her beer, waiting.
“Love’s messy,” Nina admitted bitterly. “I was so sure he was the one.”
Amara remained silent, sensing the weight of what was coming.
“He cheated,” Nina said bluntly, the words hanging heavily in the air. “I gave everything to that relationship, and he… he just walked away, like I never mattered.”
Amara’s grip on her can tightened.
“I feel so stupid,” Nina continued, her voice breaking. “I trusted him with everything. And now? It’s like I don’t even know who I am without him.”
Tears glistened in Nina’s eyes as she wiped them hastily. Amara listened quietly, her heart aching for her sister.
“You’re not stupid,” Amara said gently.
Nina let out a bitter laugh. “Thanks for not giving me that ‘you’ll find someone better’ speech. I can’t hear that right now.”
“I wasn’t going to,” Amara assured her.
They sat in silence, the hum of the city below blending with the cool night air.
“You’ll be okay,” Amara said finally.
Nina glanced at her, gratitude flickering in her eyes. “Thanks for just being here.”
“You’re stuck with me for now,” Amara teased lightly, earning a faint smile from her sister.
The weight of Nina’s heartbreak lingered between them, but so did the comfort of knowing they weren’t alone. As the night stretched on, they reminisced further about their childhood, laughter gradually pushing away the sadness.
Nina wiped her face one last time. “I needed this,” she admitted.
Amara nodded. “Me too.”
They clinked their beer cans together softly.
Some bonds, Amara realized, only grew stronger through storms — whether it was heartbreak or the bittersweet process of rebuilding.
Tonight was just the beginning of theirs.
