A Totally Not Illegal Mission
Su Yan stood outside the academy’s forbidden library, staring up at the massive stone building that loomed over him like an executioner’s blade.
He gulped. "This is a terrible idea."
"Oh, absolutely," the system agreed cheerfully. "But imagine the money!"
A mission screen floated in front of him.
---
[Mission: The Great Escape!]
Objective: Sneak into the forbidden library and steal the [Phantom Assassin’s Secret Manual].
Reward: ¥30,000 + ???
Penalty for Failure: Immediate Expulsion + ‘Extremely Painful Punishment’ (Details Not Provided).
---
Su Yan shivered. "Why does it say ‘extremely painful punishment’ like it’s a footnote?"
"Surprises are fun!"
"Not when they involve my suffering!"
"Quit complaining and get moving! You’re wasting time!"
Su Yan sighed. He was really about to do this.
Taking a deep breath, he activated Shadow Step and began moving toward the library entrance.
---
Inside the Forbidden Library
The interior was huge.
Tall bookshelves stretched up to the ceiling, packed with ancient scrolls and books that probably contained secrets too powerful for a broke guy like him to touch.
Everything was quiet. Too quiet.
"Alright, where’s the manual?" Su Yan whispered.
"In the restricted section, obviously," the system said. "Now, let’s see… Ah! It’s on the third floor in a sealed case!"
"Great. That means more sneaking."
"Or we could just punch our way through everything."
"I AM NOT STARTING A WAR IN A LIBRARY!"
"Boring."
Ignoring the system, Su Yan crept up the spiral staircase, sticking to the shadows.
But just as he reached the third floor, he froze.
Footsteps.
And they were getting closer.
---
A Familiar (and Terrifying) Face
Su Yan barely had time to hide behind a bookshelf before someone stepped into view.
His blood ran cold.
It was Zhen.
"OH, COME ON!" Su Yan screamed internally.
"Oooooh, this is bad," the system whispered. "Your scary mentor is here! What do we do?!"
"You’re supposed to be the smart one!"
"I AM smart! But I’m also here to watch you suffer!"
Zhen scanned the room, her sharp gaze sweeping over the shelves.
"She knows someone’s here," Su Yan muttered.
"Yeah, because SOMEONE is breathing like they just ran a marathon."
"I’M NERVOUS!"
"Less talking, more sneaking!"
Moving as quietly as possible, Su Yan slipped between the bookshelves, heading toward the display case holding the [Phantom Assassin’s Secret Manual].
It was locked, of course.
"System, do I have any lock-picking skills?"
"Nope!"
"Then how do I open this?"
"With sheer stupidity!"
Su Yan took a deep breath. "Iron Body."
His arm hardened, muscles tensing.
Then—BAM!
He punched the lock straight off.
"You idiot!" the system screamed. "That was LOUD!"
Su Yan froze.
Silence.
Then—
"Who’s there?"
Zhen’s voice was dangerously close.
"RUNRUNRUNRUNRUN!" the system screeched.
Su Yan grabbed the manual and bolted.
---
The Great Escape (That Almost Killed Him)
"You absolute buffoon!" the system yelled as Su Yan sprinted down the hallway. "Why did you PUNCH the lock?!"
"You told me to use sheer stupidity!"
"That was sarcasm, you moron!"
Behind him, Zhen’s voice echoed through the halls.
"STOP RUNNING, SU YAN!"
"WHY DO YOU SOUND SO ANGRY?!"
"BECAUSE YOU’RE A FOOL!"
"FAIR ENOUGH!"
Su Yan activated Shadow Step, vanishing into the darkness just as Zhen reached his last location.
Breathing heavily, he pressed himself against a wall, praying she wouldn’t find him.
Zhen stood there, scanning the corridor with narrowed eyes.
"I know you’re here," she said coldly. "You might be able to hide, but you can’t escape forever."
Su Yan did not breathe.
After a long pause, Zhen turned and walked away.
The moment she was gone, Su Yan collapsed against the wall, sweating buckets.
"I hate my life," he whispered.
"Yeah, but at least you got the book!" the system cheered. "Mission complete!"
Su Yan opened his status screen, and sure enough—
[Mission Complete!]
Reward: ¥30,000 + ‘Phantom Assassin’s Secret Skill’ Unlocked!
"I got a new skill?!" Su Yan gasped.
"Yup! Want to try it out?"
"Not right now! I need to get out of here first!"
"Fair. But also—hahaha, Zhen is definitely gonna kill you later."
Su Yan groaned. He knew.
But for now? He needed to go back to his room and pass out before something else ridiculous happened.
Meanwhile…
Zhen sat in her dorm, staring at the reports on her desk.
Someone had broken into the forbidden library.
And she had a very strong suspicion that person was Su Yan.
But how?
He was a fool. A reckless, untrained idiot.
And yet—he had somehow escaped her grasp.
Zhen narrowed her eyes.
Something wasn’t right.
Su Yan was hiding something, and she was going to figure out what it was.
Even if it meant forcing the truth out of him.
