Su Yan sat on the park bench, his chest rising and falling with every breath. His stomach, full of illegally acquired gourmet food, was protesting the sudden intake. The Imperial Dragon Hotel was now a blur in his memory, replaced with thoughts of a sweet escape from the madness that had become his life.
Just as he thought he could relax for a moment, the system chimed again, bringing him back to his grim reality.
[New Mission: Create and host a fake reality TV show in the middle of a crowded plaza. (Reward: ¥10,000)]
Su Yan’s eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open.
“No way. No. No, no, no.”
He was getting tired of the no-way’s.
“I just snuck into a hotel, escaped with food like some kind of criminal, and now you want me to... create a fake reality show in a public plaza? Are you insane?” he yelled, voice cracking.
[Mission has been assigned. You have 30 minutes to begin filming. Failure to comply will result in a debt increase.]
“Debt increase?! I can’t even afford to live without this damn system increasing my debt!” He slammed his palm against the bench, startling a pigeon nearby.
His mind raced. There was no time for hesitation. He had to act, and act fast. A reality show? He had no script, no idea how to set up cameras, and—
The system interrupted his thoughts with another beep.
[Additional Instructions: You must gather at least five participants and have them perform in ridiculous challenges for the audience. Bonus reward if you can make them cry.]
Bonus reward?
Su Yan’s eyes darted around the plaza. He spotted a few street performers, a couple of bored-looking tourists, and—wait.
There.
A group of three well-dressed office workers, who had clearly finished their lunch break and were now scrolling through their phones.
One of them—an older man with graying hair—looked especially sour, like a classic corporate middle manager. Su Yan grinned. This was perfect.
Step 1: Gather the Cast.
Su Yan sauntered over, an exaggeratedly wide grin plastered on his face. "Excuse me, sir. I’m filming a new reality TV show and I need some participants. You look like the perfect candidate!"
The man blinked at him, clearly skeptical. "What? A reality show?"
"That’s right!" Su Yan nodded enthusiastically. "It’s called Office Survival, and it’s about surviving a day of ridiculous office challenges. First challenge: Survive the interview!"
The man’s brow furrowed. "And you need me for this... why?"
"I’m the host, of course!" Su Yan gestured wildly, even though he had no clue what he was doing. "Come on, you’ll be famous! Think about it! You could be a star!"
The man looked at his companions—two women in their late twenties—and shrugged. “I’m in. But only because this looks like it’ll be a complete train wreck. I need a good laugh.”
The two women exchanged curious glances before nodding. "Why not?" one said, her voice filled with a mix of amusement and disbelief.
"Yes!" Su Yan pumped his fist in the air. "This is going to be awesome."
Step 2: Set Up the Challenges.
The next few minutes were a blur of hurried planning. Su Yan had no idea what he was doing, but he knew he had to keep them entertained. He hastily grabbed a clipboard and scribbled down "challenges" that could be completed with minimal effort.
“Alright!” Su Yan shouted, trying to muster some semblance of authority. “First challenge: Office Chair Races!”
He directed the three volunteers to office chairs that had been left in a corner of the plaza by a nearby building. Each person had to sit in the chair and race to the other side of the plaza without touching the ground.
The man in the suit eyed his chair dubiously. "This isn’t what I signed up for..."
"Too late!" Su Yan laughed, shoving him into the chair. “You agreed to the show! Now race!”
The office worker let out a startled yelp as he rolled backward into the fountain.
"Perfect!" Su Yan cheered, writing something down on the clipboard. "Challenge complete! On to the next!"
Step 3: Make Them Cry.
Su Yan’s eyes lit up as the bonus reward came to mind. He needed to push the limits. This was the time for the ultimate challenge—one that would have his contestants crying and the audience entertained.
His eyes landed on the last challenge of his list.
"Alright! Time for the Ultimate Office Emotional Breakdown!"
The contestants groaned. "What do we have to do for this one?" the second woman asked, raising an eyebrow.
Su Yan grinned. “Simple. I want you to sit in front of a camera and recount the most embarrassing moment of your office life! The one thing that makes you want to quit your job every time you remember it!"
The woman hesitated but quickly agreed. "Alright, here goes: I once accidentally emailed a client a spreadsheet of personal embarrassing expenses instead of the report!"
Laughter echoed through the plaza. The other two contestants looked at each other with concern, but Su Yan nodded encouragingly. "Perfect! You’re doing great! Now, for the emotional climax—tell us what happened next!"
The woman shuddered dramatically. “Well, I had to call the client back and explain. The worst part? They laughed... and they still hired me!"
“That’s it!” Su Yan exclaimed. “And cut!”
The crowd applauded—at least a dozen bystanders had gathered by this point, entertained by the spectacle.
Su Yan took a deep breath and stared at his clipboard.
[Mission Complete: ¥10,000 added to balance.]
“I can’t believe this is my life,” Su Yan muttered as the contestants dispersed, most likely never wanting to speak to him again.
Just as he thought the day couldn’t get any worse, the system beeped once more, ready to hit him with the next mission.
[Next Mission: Assassinate a VIP (Reward: ¥20,000)]
Su Yan froze.
"Wait, what?!"
