Episode 6: Lights, Camera, Action!
Title: Zara Iloh: The Making of "The Shadowborn"
Episode Overview:
After casting the actors, Zara and his team are ready to begin filming The Shadowborn. They face technical difficulties, unexpected challenges, and some hilarious bloopers, but they push through to make their dream a reality. As the set is built, Zara's excitement grows, and he learns valuable lessons about filmmaking. The short film may just be the beginning of something much bigger.
The First Day on Set
The set for The Shadowborn is buzzing with energy. Zara, Kunle, and the rest of the team arrive early, ready to turn their vision into a film. The soundstage is alive with the hum of equipment and the chatter of crew members. It feels like the beginning of something huge.
Zara looks around, his heart racing. "We’re doing this, Kunle. This is real."
Kunle grins. "Bro, we’ve been dreaming about this for months. Let’s make it happen."
The first scene to shoot is the iconic opening sequence where Cyber Vortex (Obinna) is first suited up. The costume department has done an amazing job—David Adedeji is fitted in the sleek, high-tech Cyber Vortex suit, complete with glowing lights and futuristic armor.
But there’s a problem. The suit is too tight for David to move comfortably, and he struggles to breathe properly. The crew quickly works to adjust the suit, but it takes a good hour to fix.
Meanwhile, the lighting team is setting up. The scene requires dim lighting with bright neon highlights to give the futuristic feel. They struggle to get the right angles, but eventually, everything is set.
Filming the First Scene
Finally, they’re ready to shoot.
“Action!” shouts the director.
David, now in the suit, looks determined as he steps into the alley. He’s supposed to act tough and confident as he confronts the Shadowborn thugs. The crew begins rolling.
But just as David takes his first step, the suit’s LED lights malfunction, causing a distracting flicker. Everyone laughs as David tries to maintain his focus.
Zara, sitting behind the camera, sighs. "It’s gonna be one of those days, huh?"
Kunle laughs. "Bro, we just need some duct tape, and we’ll be fine!"
The crew spends another 20 minutes fixing the lights, with David patiently sitting in character. When the scene finally resumes, the actor delivers his lines with passion. “Guess what? You found me first.” His delivery is strong, but during the action sequence where he’s supposed to punch a thug, his fist accidentally hits the wall, causing him to stumble and lose his balance.
Cue the blooper reel: David laughs and rubs his hand. “Guess I need to work on my punching technique.”
Unexpected Setback
After a few successful takes, the crew moves on to the next action scene where Cyber Vortex faces off with Mina (Amina Bello). Amina, known for her martial arts skills, is excited to show off her stunt work.
As the scene progresses, she and David engage in a brutal fight sequence. Everything goes smoothly until Amina performs a high spinning kick, only for her foot to accidentally land on David’s chest—hard.
The entire crew stops. David lies on the ground, gasping for air.
Zara rushes over. “David! You good?”
Amina is immediately apologetic. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to—”
David chuckles, barely able to breathe. “It’s okay, it’s okay. Just… give me a second.”
Zara turns to Kunle and the rest of the crew. “This… this is why they tell you not to let actors fight without pads.”
The Magic of Special Effects
The next challenge comes when it’s time for the big action sequence where Cyber Vortex takes down three Shadowborn thugs in the dark alley. Zara and the team have set up special effects to simulate electric punches and explosions.
The first few takes go well, but on one of the shots, the explosion effect goes off too early, catching the camera crew by surprise. The explosion isn’t even in the shot, and they have to redo the take.
Zara laughs nervously, realizing how much detail goes into filmmaking. “I thought this was gonna be easy. How wrong was I?”
The special effects team reworks the timing, and after a couple more takes, they finally get the explosion perfectly timed for the scene.
The Bloopers
As filming progresses, Zara’s team accumulates a bloopers reel that captures the chaos of making the film. Some of the funniest moments include:
David Adedeji trying to act tough but accidentally tripping over the suit’s boots every time he takes a step.
Kunle (acting as the “assistant director”) continuously getting distracted by his phone during important takes and then having to shout, “Sorry, sorry! I swear I’m professional!”
Amina Bello accidentally kicking a crew member’s coffee cup off the table during a fight scene.
The special effects crew accidentally triggering a rain machine in the middle of an intense fight scene when it was meant for a later shot, leaving everyone soaked.
The Big Final Scene
The last shot of the day is the final confrontation between Cyber Vortex and Dr. Nzoka (Chinonso Ijeoma). It’s a huge moment, and Zara wants everything to go perfectly.
David and Chinonso prepare for the scene, and the tension is palpable. The camera is rolling, and Zara’s heart is racing. This is the scene that will define the whole film.
As the scene plays out, everything goes perfectly. The camera angles are dramatic, the acting is powerful, and the fight choreography is smooth. David’s electric punch lands perfectly, and Chinonso’s dramatic fall is executed flawlessly. The final shot is just as Zara envisioned it: Cyber Vortex standing tall over Dr. Nzoka, victorious.
Wrap-Up and Reflection
As the last scene is wrapped, Zara can’t help but smile. The day was full of obstacles, but they’ve made it through. He looks around at his team, proud of what they’ve accomplished together.
“Great job, everyone,” Zara says, his voice full of pride. “We did it.”
Kunle slaps him on the back. “You did it, bro. You made a movie.”
The crew starts packing up the equipment, and Zara looks at the footage they’ve shot so far. He can’t believe it—this is just the beginning of something huge.
Cliffhanger Ending:
With the film officially shot, Zara and his team now face the daunting task of editing the footage and submitting it to investors. Will they impress the investors and secure funding for a full-length feature? Find out in the next episode!
