Episode 5: The Road to Healing

The weeks that followed the goodbye felt like an endless blur. So-eun moved through the motions of life—graduating, packing up her things, attending farewell parties for friends she hadn’t seen in months—but her heart remained heavy. The finality of her parting with Joon-ho had left an indelible mark on her soul, one she couldn’t simply erase. Even as she tried to fill her days with distractions, there was a hollow space inside her that no one could fill.

The apartment she had rented in the city felt empty. It had been meant for new beginnings, a fresh start after graduation. But the silence echoed in every corner, a constant reminder of everything she had lost. She spent most of her days at home, lost in her thoughts or trying to fill the emptiness with books, music, and old movies. She knew she needed to move on, but the grief of her broken relationship with Joon-ho lingered in ways she hadn’t expected.

One rainy afternoon, as she sat by the window, watching the droplets race down the glass, her phone buzzed. She glanced at it with reluctance, but the name on the screen caught her attention: Han Soo-jin. Her college best friend.

Soo-jin had been a constant presence in So-eun’s life, always the one to bring laughter in even the darkest of times. The two had stayed in touch after graduation, but their conversations had become sparse, with both of them navigating their new lives. So-eun hadn’t shared much about her breakup with Joon-ho, but Soo-jin must have sensed the change in her, as she always did.

"Hey, So-eun, how have you been?" the message read. "I miss you. Let’s meet up soon."

So-eun smiled faintly, appreciating the gesture. It had been a while since they’d seen each other, and Soo-jin’s cheerful personality was exactly what she needed right now. She quickly typed back.

"I’ve been okay. Just adjusting to the new city. I’d love to meet up."

Soo-jin replied almost immediately: "Great! How about this weekend? I know a café that has amazing desserts. I’ll pick you up at noon!"

So-eun felt a wave of relief. Spending time with Soo-jin, even for just a few hours, would be a welcome escape from the weight of her emotions. She needed something to shake her out of the fog she had been living in.

When the weekend finally arrived, So-eun found herself sitting in the cozy café Soo-jin had recommended. The warm, comforting scent of fresh pastries filled the air, and the soft murmur of conversation around them made her feel, for the first time in weeks, like she could breathe again.

Soo-jin arrived a few minutes later, a wide grin spreading across her face as she spotted So-eun at their table. She was the same as always—bright, bubbly, and full of life. So-eun couldn't help but smile in return.

"Soo-jin!" she greeted, standing up to hug her friend. "It's so good to see you."

"You too!" Soo-jin exclaimed, sitting down across from her. "You look... well, better than I expected, given how much I know you've been going through."

So-eun laughed softly, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. "It’s been hard, but I’m trying."

Soo-jin leaned forward, her eyes full of concern. "I know you’re not the type to open up about things easily, So-eun, but you don’t have to carry all of this alone. You know I’m here, right? For whatever you need."

The sincerity in her friend's voice made So-eun’s heart ache. She hadn’t realized just how much she missed this—having someone to lean on, someone who cared enough to ask how she was really feeling.

"I know," So-eun replied, her voice soft. "But I don’t know where to start. I’ve been trying to forget about Joon-ho, trying to move on, but everything feels so... unfinished."

Soo-jin’s expression softened with understanding. "I get it. You’ve always believed in love so deeply, So-eun. And letting go isn’t easy when you feel like your heart is still holding on. But you also need to remember that there’s more to life than one person, no matter how much they meant to you."

"I don’t know if I can do that," So-eun admitted, her voice breaking slightly. "He was my everything, Soo-jin. And now... I feel lost. Like I’m not sure who I am without him."

Soo-jin reached across the table, placing a comforting hand on So-eun’s. "You don’t have to know everything right away. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You’re allowed to take the time to heal. It’s okay to not have all the answers. But just remember—you're stronger than you think. You’ve got so much to offer, So-eun. This world is still full of opportunities, and your heart will heal, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now."

So-eun nodded, the weight of Soo-jin’s words settling deep within her. Maybe she couldn’t move on immediately, maybe the pain of losing Joon-ho wouldn’t disappear overnight, but she could take small steps. She could begin to rebuild, to rediscover herself outside of the love she had lost.

"You’re right," So-eun said, her voice gaining strength. "Maybe I’ve been too focused on the past. It’s time to focus on the present, on me. I owe it to myself to start living again."

Soo-jin smiled warmly, squeezing her hand. "Exactly. And remember, I’m here every step of the way. We’re in this together."

The afternoon passed in easy conversation, and for the first time in what felt like forever, So-eun felt a spark of hope. She wasn’t alone. She had her friends, she had herself, and in time, she would find the strength to move forward.

That evening, as she walked back to her apartment, So-eun took a deep breath, feeling a little lighter than before. The road ahead was uncertain, and there would still be days when the pain of missing Joon-ho would overwhelm her. But for the first time in a long while, she believed that healing was possible. She had lost a love, but she hadn’t lost herself.

And that, So-eun realized, was something worth holding on to.
