Episode 4: The Silence That Follows

The days after their conversation by the river were a blur of confusion and pain. So-eun had always believed that love, in its purest form, was invincible—that it could conquer anything. But standing in the wake of Joon-ho's words, she began to understand that love was fragile, just like the delicate thread that now separated their hearts.

The days seemed to stretch on forever as she struggled with the absence of the person she had once shared everything with. Their meetings had become sparse, their conversations short and strained. Each time she saw him, it felt like a part of him was already gone, drifting away into the void he had created between them.

Joon-ho, too, was changed. The light that had once filled his eyes whenever he looked at her had dimmed, replaced by a distance that neither of them knew how to cross. He had asked for space, but what they both had learned was that space didn’t heal wounds; it only made them fester. So-eun had tried to understand, tried to give him the room he needed, but it was harder than she ever thought it would be.

Graduation day arrived, marking the end of their college journey. For So-eun, it should have been a day of celebration—of the culmination of years of hard work and memories. But instead, it was a reminder of everything she had lost. The empty seat beside her, where Joon-ho should have been, was the loudest presence in the room. She smiled and congratulated her friends, but her heart wasn’t in it. Her thoughts were elsewhere—on the boy who had once promised her forever, now a shadow in her past.

Later that evening, as she walked through the quiet campus, the cherry blossoms in full bloom above her, So-eun found herself at the spot where it all began—the same riverbank where Joon-ho had told her that their love was slipping away. The soft rustling of the leaves, the gentle flow of the water, all felt like distant memories now.

She sat down on the grass, staring out at the river, her thoughts consumed by the void Joon-ho had left in her life. She had tried to move on, to convince herself that she was better off without him, but the truth was that she wasn’t sure who she was anymore without him. She had built her life around him, around the idea of them. Now, that idea felt like a lie.

As she sat in the quiet stillness, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced down to see a message from Joon-ho. Her heart skipped a beat.

"So-eun, I need to see you."

The words felt like a cruel joke. After everything, after the silence, after the distance, he wanted to see her? Part of her wanted to ignore the message, to block him out and move on with her life. But another part of her—the part that still loved him—yearned for closure, for answers, for something that could make sense of all this pain.

She quickly typed a response.

"Where?"

He replied almost immediately.

"By the river. Same place."

So-eun stood up, her heart racing in her chest. The world felt like it was closing in on her, the weight of the past and the uncertainty of the future pressing down on her. But she couldn’t back out now. She needed to face him, to confront the love that had been ripped from her so cruelly.

When she arrived, Joon-ho was already there, standing by the water. The setting sun cast a golden glow over his face, making him look like the boy she had once fallen in love with. But there was something different about him now, something distant, something unreachable.

"So-eun," he said quietly as she approached. "I didn’t think you’d come."

"I wasn’t sure if I should," she replied, her voice a mixture of uncertainty and pain. "You said you needed space, and I’ve given you that. I’ve tried to move on."

Joon-ho nodded, looking down at his feet. "I know. And I don’t expect you to understand, but I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. About us. About what I want."

"So have I," So-eun replied, her eyes meeting his. "I’ve been thinking about what we had. About what we lost."

There was a long pause, the air between them thick with unspoken words. Joon-ho stepped closer, his hands trembling slightly. "I’ve made mistakes, So-eun. I should have never asked you to choose. I should have trusted us more. But I was scared."

"So was I," So-eun whispered, her voice breaking. "I was scared too. Scared of losing you, scared of everything falling apart."

Joon-ho reached out, taking her hand in his. The familiar warmth of his touch sent a wave of emotions flooding through her, but she held back the tears. She couldn’t let herself be weak. Not now.

"I know we can’t go back to the way things were," he said softly. "But I need you to know that I never stopped loving you. I don’t know what the future holds, but I want you in it. Even if it’s not the same as before. Even if we’re not the same."

So-eun looked at him, her heart torn between the love she still felt and the reality of their situation. "Joon-ho, I don’t know if I can keep doing this. I don’t know if I can keep waiting for something that may never come."

"I don’t want you to wait," Joon-ho replied, his voice thick with emotion. "I just want you to know that I’m here. And maybe, one day, we’ll find our way back to each other. But if not… if not, then I’ll always be grateful for what we had."

So-eun’s heart shattered at his words, but she knew there was nothing more she could do. She had to let him go. They both had to find their own paths, even if that meant walking away from each other.

With a heavy heart, So-eun pulled her hand away from his, taking a step back. "Goodbye, Joon-ho."

For the first time in what felt like forever, So-eun turned away from him, her heart breaking with each step. She knew this was the end of their story, the end of the love that had once felt like it would last forever.

But as she walked away, she couldn’t help but wonder if, someday, fate would find a way to bring them back together—or if this was truly the end of their journey.

And as the river flowed quietly beside her, So-eun realized that sometimes, love wasn’t enough to keep two hearts from drifting apart. Sometimes, fate had its own plans.
