Something he might have already lost.

— A Week Later —

Mukesh had never hated work before. The office had always been his playground—a place where he charmed, flirted, and breezed through the day without a second thought.

Now? It felt like a battlefield.

Mithun didn’t look at him. Didn’t acknowledge him. Mukesh could be standing right next to him, and Mithun would act as if he wasn’t there.

And worst of all? He was smiling again.

Not at Mukesh, of course. But at other people. People who weren’t him.

“Dude, you’re staring again,” Rhea muttered under her breath as she walked past Mukesh’s desk.

Mukesh ignored her, eyes fixed on Mithun. He was talking to someone—a colleague Mukesh had never bothered remembering the name of—and laughing at something they said.

The same laugh Mukesh used to hear after every stupid joke he made.

It made him sick.

Before he could stop himself, he was moving.

“Mithun.”

Mithun looked up, his expression neutral. “Mukesh.”

Mukesh forced a smirk. “Got a minute?”

Mithun glanced at his colleague, then back at Mukesh. “I’m a little busy.”

Mukesh’s smirk faltered for a split second. “It’s important.”

Something flickered in Mithun’s eyes. Annoyance? Hesitation? Mukesh wasn’t sure. But after a tense pause, Mithun sighed and nodded toward the hallway. “Fine. Five minutes.”

Mukesh followed him, his heart pounding harder than he cared to admit.

The second they were alone, Mukesh leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. “So. You’re really doing this, huh?”

Mithun frowned. “Doing what?”

“Pretending like I don’t exist.”

Mithun let out a dry laugh. “Oh, now you care?”

Mukesh clenched his jaw. “You know I do.”

“No, Mukesh,” Mithun’s voice was cold, but his eyes held something deeper. Something tired. “You care about the idea of me. You care when I pull away. But you never cared when I was right in front of you, giving you everything.”

Mukesh opened his mouth—then closed it.

Because he didn’t have a defense. Not this time.

Mithun shook his head. “I’m done playing this game. If you have nothing real to say, then we’re done here.”

And then, just like that, he turned to leave.

Panic surged through Mukesh’s chest. He grabbed Mithun’s wrist, desperate to keep him from walking away again. “Wait—”
