Craving You
"If I mattered to you, you wouldn't have treated me like this."
Title: Almost Too Late
Mukesh didn't care. That's what he told himself, at least. He didn't care that Mithun had stopped seeking him out. He didn't care that Mithun had stopped reacting to his teasing, that his sharp comebacks had dulled into short, indifferent replies.
And he definitely didn't care when he spotted Mithun laughing—actually laughing—with someone else at the office party.
He wasn't keeping track. No, he wasn't. But he saw how Mithun's fingers brushed against some guy's sleeve, how his lips curled into a soft smile that had once been reserved for Mukesh alone.
Something burned in his chest. It wasn't jealousy. It couldn't be. Mukesh didn't do jealousy.
He drowned his irritation in another sip of whiskey, ignoring the way his grip on the glass tightened. He had no right to be mad. He was the one who had pushed Mithun away, turned him into nothing more than a fleeting fling, a one-night mistake. So why the hell did it hurt so much to watch him move on?
“Relax, Mukesh,” Rhea teased beside him, following his gaze. “You’re staring holes into Mithun.”
Mukesh scoffed, rolling his eyes. “I don’t stare.”
Rhea arched an eyebrow. “Right. And I’m the Queen of England.”
Mukesh ignored her and turned his attention back to Mithun. Just then, the guy leaned in closer, whispering something into Mithun’s ear, and whatever it was—it made him smile.
That was it. Mukesh had had enough.
Without thinking, he strode across the room, weaving through the crowd until he reached them. “Mithun,” he said, a smirk plastered on his face, masking the storm underneath. “Didn’t know you liked boring company now.”
Mithun looked up, his expression unreadable. “Didn’t know you cared.”
Mukesh faltered, just for a second.
The guy beside Mithun raised an eyebrow. “Hey, man, we were just talking—”
“I wasn’t talking to you,” Mukesh cut in, his voice deceptively smooth.
Mithun let out a dry chuckle, shaking his head. “You’re unbelievable, Mukesh.”
Mukesh leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. “And you’re playing a dangerous game, sweetheart.”
For the first time in weeks, Mukesh saw fire in Mithun’s eyes again—but this time, it wasn’t laced with longing. It was fury.
Mithun exhaled sharply and turned to the guy beside him. “Excuse me.” Then, before Mukesh could react, Mithun grabbed his wrist and yanked him away from the crowd, leading him out onto the balcony. The cold night air did little to cool the heat between them.
