The days following the tense exchange in the pediatric ward had been a strange mix of anticipation and frustration. Reyaansh found himself oddly aware of Dr. Avni’s presence, even when they weren’t directly interacting. Every time he passed by her, his pulse would quicken, and it wasn’t just the intensity of her critiques. No, it was something else. Something unspoken that lingered in the air between them, charging the hospital’s otherwise sterile halls with tension.
It was during another late shift when it happened. The hospital was quiet, the usual hum of activity subdued as most staff members had begun to wind down for the night. Reyaansh was finishing up a report when his phone buzzed. He glanced at the message. It was from Avni.
“Meet me in the ICU. I need your input on a case.”
He stared at the message for a moment, wondering why she’d want him there. The last time they'd worked closely together, it had ended in a standoff. Yet, despite everything, Reyaansh found himself walking toward the ICU, his steps purposeful but laden with curiosity.
When he arrived, Avni was already there, standing near a patient's bed with her back to him. The soft glow of the overhead lights cast a gentle aura around her, making her seem almost ethereal. She didn’t turn around when he entered, but her posture shifted slightly as if she knew he was there.
“Dr. Malhotra,” she greeted, her voice low but steady. “We’ve got a complicated case. I need your expertise.”
Reyaansh took a moment to absorb her words. This was the first time she hadn’t been confrontational or distant. She was being... professional. Calm. But he could sense the underlying tension in her. She was still testing him, and he couldn’t help but feel the pull between them.
He moved to her side, looking down at the patient’s charts. “What’s the issue?” he asked, his tone focused.
“The patient’s condition worsened unexpectedly,” Avni replied, pointing to the chart. “We’re not sure why, and I’m starting to think there’s an underlying complication we missed during the rounds.”
Reyaansh nodded, his mind already working through the possibilities. They spent the next few minutes discussing the case, going over test results and medical records. As they worked, the silence between them felt... different. More collaborative than it ever had been before.
When they finished, Reyaansh looked up, his gaze meeting hers. For a moment, the world outside the ICU seemed to vanish. There was a vulnerability in her eyes, something he hadn’t seen before. It made him want to reach out, to bridge the gap that had existed between them for so long.
“Good work,” he said, surprising himself with the sincerity in his voice. “We’ve got a solid plan.”
Avni’s lips quirked into a small smile, but it was fleeting. “I knew you’d come through.”
Their eyes held for a beat too long, and the air between them seemed to thicken. The unspoken connection was undeniable, but neither of them spoke it aloud. Neither of them dared to.
Before Reyaansh could say anything else, the sound of footsteps echoed in the hallway, snapping them both out of the moment. Avni quickly turned back to the patient, her demeanor shifting instantly. The wall between them was back up.
“I’ll let you know when the patient’s condition improves,” she said briskly, her voice now all business.
Reyaansh couldn’t help the frustration that crept into his chest. There was something between them, something more than just professional respect, but she wasn’t ready to acknowledge it. Not yet.
As he turned to leave, he glanced back at her. “Avni…” he began, but the words caught in his throat. Instead, he simply nodded and walked out, the door clicking shut behind him.
