A Glimpse of Us.
What are the odds? You like your best friend way more than you could ever imagine.
First, it’s pretending when, deeply, it’s getting her every move stuck in your head every now and then. How she smacks her lips in between every conversation, how she talks, how she walks, and how she eats
Who she talks to, how she talks to them, and why she talks to them
You sit down to ask yourself, Why do you care so much about these petty things? But then you tell yourself they’re not so petty because she’s your best friend and you’re supposed to care. But then it’s going beyond caring, and you're
“Bree! Bree!” Kira snaps her fingers in front of my eyes, causing me to blink frantically.
I shake my head. “Sorry,”
“Oh my gosh, I’ve been talking to myself all this while,” she gasps.
Her lips gloss glisten as she exhales.
"Anyways,” she says, shaking her head. “I’ve been talking about Dustin,”
I nod. “You say he’s been acting weird?”
"Yes,” she pouts. “Last night at Stacie’s party, he wouldn’t even touch me or hold me properly, or, I mean, Hello? He’s my boyfriend! Do you think he’s mad or something?"
And we’re back to the boy problem.
“I don’t know... Have you tried asking him?" I stabbed my lunch, burying the whole thing in my mouth.
“Ask him?” She scoffs, “What am I? Twelve?”
“I don’t know,” I muffled.
She sighs. "Oh, Bree, sometimes you’re like a five-year-old boy.”
I rolled my eyes.
As one of the most popular girls in school, Kira changes her boyfriends like she changes her outfit. I don’t think she likes any of the boys she dates; they’re all just for her final school year's reputation. She only deeply cares for and loves her mascara and lip gloss collections.
Sometimes people wonder how we are friends. best friends even. We were childhood friends who grew up having so many things in common. And now all she cares about are parties, boys, her reputation, and lipglosses. It’s a miracle how our label is still hanging on best friends and how much I’ve come to fall for her.
I was supposed to see her as Kira, who cries at every game I beat her at and gets spinach stuck in her teeth, and I’ll make fun of her. Who would lock me in her bathroom after she’s put a tape over my mouth whenever I go over to her house to play?
But all of a sudden, at the edge of seventeen, she’s tossing the kira I know aside to become this perfect woman, who is so prim and proper you’ll barely see a spinach between her teeth; she barely laughs out loud and gives me multiple slaps when she can’t contain her laughter.
Kira gawks at me with her big brown eyes and her lashes coated in heavy mascara.
“So? What do you think I should do?"
“Just asks,” I swallow the food in my mouth.
She scoffs again. "Okay, you’re crazy; who the hell asks?”
“Every sane person in a relationship if their partner’s suddenly acting weird?” I shrug.
“Dustin and I are not like that. We don’t ask; we just kiss and make up."She smacks her lips before stretching them into a smile, allowing her shallow dimples to pop out.
I look down at my juice box. "Well, I hope you and Dustin's relationship lasts for a week this time; you and Hank only lasted for two days."
She rolls her eyes, finally fixing a piece of cake in her mouth.
She barely eats these days; we’ve been having lunch together all our lives, and I know how Kira eats.
And the fact that she has a lot of friends and an entourage too, but she never once ate lunch with them; she always has lunch with me, and all her friends know the drill.
Despite how small she looks, Kira is the most seen person at school, and I, on the other hand, just want a quiet life before I graduate high school. I don’t think I can be friends with Kira.
“I should probably remind myself every now and then to not get relationship advice from you since you’ve never been in one.” She grabs her purse.
“What if I am in a relationship, but it’s a secret, and I don’t break up with them every two days?” I shrug, grabbing her juice box because I know she’ll never have it.
“Very funny, and let me guess, you’re dating Jenna?” She starts to laugh but stops when someone walks by.
"Anyways, Breanna ,I have to go sort things out with my Dusty."
“You’ve barely touched your food,” I point out.
She sighs, “I thought you were going to have it.”
"I'm not a big fan of cake,” I say, shaking my head.
She arches her brows at me.
I go crazy for cakes, and she knows it.
“People change,” I add.
Glancing around, she sighs heavily before stabbing her cake and shoving the entire thing in her mouth.
“Happy?” She muffles.
“More than you could ever imagine,” I beam.
With my bottle of water to go with her cake, Kira gets on her feet.
“Now to meet my Dusty,” she beams.
I really hate it when she calls him Dusty.
"Oh, and here comes your boyfriend,” she snickers.
Baron joins us, and Kira beams at me.
Baron is this boy I got paired with at biology to be partners on a project; somehow we became friends, and he’s been my boyfriend for Kira. Well Kira thought I'm straight as a ruler
God help me.
“Hey Kira," Baron smiles.
“Baron” Kira acknowledges her presence with her dimpled smile. “Anyways got to run; Thwarte is throwing a party this weekend. You’ll be there, right, Bree?"
I shake my head.
“Oh my gosh, why are you like this? It will be the party of the year. How can you miss it? Everyone’s going” She scoffs, glaring at me like I’m committing a crime by choosing and loving my alone time at home.
“Yeah, I’ll be going too,” Baron chimes in.
"See, even Baron is not as dorky as you are. No offence, Baron."Kira rushes her word, getting a nod from Him.
“I’m not going. I hope you both have a great time,” I added.
“You’re unbelievable. I don’t know how we’re friends sometimes,” Kira huffs.
“Maybe because I’m way too awesome."
“You mispronounced awful." She sneers at me before catwalking away, her presence enchanting everyone she passes by in the cafeteria.
How did my kira become an eye-catcher?
“Watch out, everyone! Breanna is drooling!" Baron’s voice takes my eyes off Kira and to her.
“Bro, you almost emptied your saliva staring at Kira. You still haven’t told her how you feel.
And Baron thinks I'm bisexual.
Newsflash,I'm a lesbian!
“I’m not crazy,” I scoff.
Somehow Baron has caught on that I like Kira, since we hang out more than I hang out with anyone else, and he’s not letting me breathe about it.
It’s because he has always looked up to Kira, loved everything about Kira, and somehow wants to be like Kira, and because of me, she gets a chance to finally speak to the popular Kira, and she says she’s going to do everything to get me together with Kira since I helped her talk to her role model or whatever.
But if anything, I want her out of this as much as possible.
Hopefully, whatever I feel for Kira is just a passing flame.
