The city had never felt so foreign to Maya. The streets that once comforted her now seemed laced with shadows, each corner holding the potential for danger. Aidan walked beside her, his strides purposeful, his jaw clenched. He radiated a quiet intensity, as though he were calculating their next move.
"Where are we going?" Maya finally asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Somewhere we can talk without being overheard," Aidan replied.
The words sent a chill down her spine. "You think they’re listening?"
He glanced at her, his expression unreadable. "If they know about me, then they’re watching. Listening isn’t far-fetched."
They turned down a narrow alleyway, the air thick with the scent of damp stone and faint traces of smoke. Aidan stopped in front of an unmarked door, pulling out a key from his pocket.
"You have a hideout?" Maya asked, arching an eyebrow.
"Something like that," Aidan said. "Let’s just say it pays to be prepared."
The door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit room cluttered with old maps, a corkboard pinned with photographs, and a desk stacked with papers and electronics.
Maya stepped inside, her gaze darting around. "What is this place?"
"My workspace," Aidan said, closing the door behind them and locking it with a heavy bolt.
"For what, exactly?"
He hesitated for a moment, then motioned for her to sit. "Maya, you need to understand something. Whoever sent you that message isn’t just playing games. This is calculated. Professional."
She sank into the worn leather chair, her mind spinning. "You’re not a random guy, are you?"
Aidan leaned against the desk, his arms crossed. "Not exactly."
"Then who are you?"
He exhaled, running a hand through his dark hair. "I used to work in counterintelligence. My job was to find people who operated in the shadows—spies, hackers, people who thrived on secrecy. I quit years ago, but clearly, my past isn’t as buried as I thought."
Maya stared at him, trying to process the revelation. "Why would someone target me, then? I’m just an ordinary person."
Aidan shook his head. "No one gets caught in something like this by accident. Think, Maya. Is there anything—anything at all—that connects you to someone powerful or dangerous?"
Her thoughts raced. The answer seemed so obvious it hurt to say aloud. "Ethan."
Aidan’s eyes narrowed. "Your ex?"
Maya nodded, her voice trembling. "We broke up a few days ago. He was... hiding something. Something big. I didn’t stick around to find out what, but now I’m starting to think I should have."
"What was he hiding?"
"I don’t know," she admitted. "He always claimed he worked in real estate, but there were too many inconsistencies. Late nights, secretive phone calls, money that didn’t add up. When I confronted him, he said I wasn’t supposed to know."
Aidan leaned forward, his voice sharp. "Did he ever mention names? Places? Anything specific?"
Maya shook her head. "No. But the night we broke up, he got a call. He left the room to take it, but I overheard something. A name—‘Vanguard.’ Does that mean anything to you?"
Aidan’s expression darkened. He walked to the corkboard, rifling through a stack of papers until he pulled out a photo. "Vanguard isn’t a person," he said, handing her the image.
Maya stared at the photograph. It was of a sleek, modern building with mirrored windows and a discreet logo on the side: Vanguard Industries.
"They’re a private intelligence firm," Aidan explained. "Officially, they provide security solutions to corporations and governments. Unofficially, they’re involved in black-market data trading, corporate espionage, and worse."
Her stomach turned. "Ethan was connected to them?"
"It’s possible," Aidan said. "And if he is, then this isn’t just about you or him. Vanguard doesn’t leave loose ends."
A sudden knock at the door made them both freeze. Aidan’s hand moved instinctively to the concealed holster beneath his jacket.
"Stay here," he whispered.
Maya nodded, her heart pounding as he approached the door. He peered through the peephole, his body tense.
"It’s clear," he said after a moment, unlocking the door and pulling it open.
A woman stood on the other side, her blonde hair pulled into a tight bun and her eyes sharp as knives. She was dressed in black, her stance exuding confidence and authority.
"Aidan," she said, her tone laced with equal parts familiarity and irritation. "You’re not easy to track down."
Maya watched as Aidan’s expression shifted, his usual composure faltering for a split second. "What are you doing here, Elena?"
Elena’s gaze flicked to Maya, her lips curving into a knowing smile. "I see you’ve made a new friend. Interesting choice."
"She’s not part of this," Aidan said firmly.
"Oh, but she is," Elena replied, stepping into the room uninvited. She handed Aidan a sealed envelope. "Vanguard is looking for her. And if they’re looking, it means they’ve already found you."
Aidan’s jaw tightened as he opened the envelope. Maya stood, her voice shaking. "Who are you?"
Elena turned to her, her smile razor-sharp. "Someone who knows what you’ve gotten yourself into. And trust me, sweetheart, you’re going to need all the help you can get."
