Episode 13: The Truth Behind the Door
The air was thick with the stench of magic, dark and ancient, as the portal before them continued to writhe and pulse. Adrian’s heart raced, his grip on the hilt of his blade tightening as the swirling vortex seemed to grow in size and intensity. Clara stood beside him, her eyes fixed on the rift, a quiet determination in her gaze.
For a moment, everything felt suspended in time. The woman with golden eyes had vanished, leaving behind only the aftermath of her cryptic words. And now, this—this portal that Lucius had been working toward for so long—was opening.
Adrian’s mind raced. Everything he thought he knew about this battle, about Lucius’s plans, had been turned upside down in the last few hours. There were too many pieces to this puzzle—too many twists and turns, secrets hidden in plain sight. He had always thought he understood Lucius’s motives, but now, the more he uncovered, the less certain he became.
"Clara, stay close," he warned, his voice a low growl. She nodded, though her eyes betrayed the storm of emotions swirling inside her. They were standing at the precipice of something dangerous, something far beyond their control.
The rift in the stage flickered one last time before a shadowy figure emerged from it—tall, cloaked in darkness, a presence that seemed to suck the very light from the room. The figure’s voice was smooth, like velvet, and it echoed with authority as it filled the space.
“Adrian,” the figure said, its voice reverberating with power. “It’s been a long time.”
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. He knew that voice. He recognized the coldness, the malice behind it. It was Lucius, but... different. Darker.
The man stepped forward, revealing himself fully. His pale features were sharp, almost inhuman, and his eyes burned with a feral hunger. “I see you’ve brought the girl,” he sneered, his gaze flicking to Clara. “How... quaint. You still haven’t figured it out, have you?”
Adrian’s heart pounded in his chest. “I know enough,” he spat, his eyes narrowing on Lucius. “What do you want from Clara? She’s nothing but a pawn in your game.”
Lucius’s lips curled into a wicked smile. “Ah, you still don’t understand, do you? Clara is far more than you could ever imagine. She was never just a pawn—she was the key.”
Clara stiffened at the mention of her importance. “What are you talking about?” she demanded. “You’ve been playing this game for years. What’s the point?”
Lucius let out a cold, mocking laugh. “The point, my dear, is that you are the bloodline that can undo everything. The bloodline that has the power to open the door to the old world.”
Adrian’s mind reeled. The old world—the world that existed before the vampires, before the human races had evolved, when magic was untamed and all-consuming. That world had been sealed off, buried under layers of time and forgotten history.
But Clara... Clara was the key to it?
“Your family,” Lucius continued, his voice a low, dangerous whisper, “was cursed, bound by the old magic. You see, Clara, you are not just a human. You are a descendant of the original line of mystics who once ruled the supernatural world—a line that could open the doors to the realm of the gods themselves.”
Adrian turned to Clara, his mind racing. He had no idea what Lucius was talking about. But Clara, she seemed to sense something deep within her, something that connected to what Lucius was saying. Her expression was one of disbelief, but there was something more in her eyes—a flicker of recognition.
Clara took a step forward, her voice shaking but steady. “I... I don’t know what you’re saying. My family—my parents—were normal. They weren’t... part of anything.”
Lucius shook his head, his smile widening. “You’ve been lied to, Clara. Your bloodline was hidden, erased from the records, manipulated by forces you cannot comprehend. Your parents kept you in the dark, but you’ve always carried the power. That’s why they were afraid—afraid of what you could become, what you could unlock.”
Clara took another step toward Lucius, her eyes now filled with a storm of emotions. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Why keep me in the dark?” Her voice cracked, a mix of anger and confusion, and Adrian could see the weight of her past coming to bear. Her entire life had been a lie.
Lucius’s expression softened for a brief moment, as though he almost pitied her. “I didn’t want to reveal it to you. But I needed you to understand, Clara. You are the heir to a power that could change everything. You are the last of the line that could open the doors to the old world.”
Adrian stepped forward, his body tense, protective. “And what happens if she opens those doors, Lucius?” His voice was dangerously calm, but beneath the surface, his fury was building.
Lucius’s eyes gleamed with a cold, almost reverent satisfaction. “The old gods will return. The supernatural order will be reshaped, and the vampires will rule over everything. Humans will become nothing more than cattle, their world just a playground for those who are truly immortal.”
Clara recoiled as if struck. “You want to bring back the gods? You want to... destroy the world?” Her voice was barely above a whisper, as though she couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing.
Lucius’s eyes darkened. “I don’t want to destroy the world, Clara. I want to remake it. This world, this fragile, corrupt human existence—it's not enough. Not when there are worlds waiting, waiting for the right hands to claim them. And you, Clara, are the key to that.”
Adrian’s hand instinctively moved toward Clara, positioning himself between her and Lucius. “You’ll never get her, Lucius. We’ll stop you.”
Lucius’s gaze flickered between them, a flicker of amusement crossing his features. “You don’t understand, Adrian. You never did. This isn’t about her being my pawn or yours. This is about destiny—her destiny.” He paused, his voice low and ominous. “And you... you are just a tool to help her realize it.”
Clara’s breath hitched, her hand trembling as it reached out to Adrian’s. “Is that true?” she asked, her voice raw. “Am I... the key to this world?”
Adrian’s heart broke as he looked at her, unsure of what to say. This—this was something he hadn’t prepared for. But in that moment, it was clear to him. This wasn’t just about Lucius’s plans. This was about Clara’s own choices, her path forward.
Before Adrian could answer, the rift flared violently, the ground beneath them shaking. It was time. The portal to the old world was open, and there was no going back.
Adrian turned to Clara, his voice low and urgent. “You have to decide, Clara. Now. We have a choice. You can step through that door and embrace your destiny... or we can stop this, together.”
Clara’s gaze was filled with confusion, fear, and uncertainty—but underneath it all, there was something else. Something like a flame burning deep within her. She wasn’t ready to give up, not yet. Not when the stakes were this high.
“I don’t know if I can choose, Adrian,” she said softly, her voice trembling with the weight of the decision she had to make. “I don’t know if I can save everything. Or if I’ll destroy it.”
Adrian reached out, placing a hand on hers, the weight of the moment pressing down on them both. “We’ll face it together,” he said, his voice steady, though his heart was racing. “Whatever happens, we’re in this together.”
And with that, as the shadows of the old world loomed ever closer, Clara made her choice.
