Yena’s heart stopped at the sound of her mother’s voice. After all these years of wondering, of searching, here she was—standing before her, but still so far away. There was no rush of reunion, no joyful reunion of mother and daughter. Just a cold, hollow silence that hung between them.
Yena’s voice trembled as she stepped forward, her words heavy with years of unspoken pain. "Why, Mother? Why did you leave me? Why did you choose him?"
Her mother’s gaze softened, but her eyes were distant, as though looking past Yena, seeing something only she could comprehend.
"I never wanted to leave you," she said, her voice tinged with regret. "But there are things you don’t understand. Things I had to do."
Yena’s fists clenched at her sides, her anger rising. "I don’t understand? You abandoned me, and now you’ve joined forces with Sung Hwan! How could you do that? How could you become like him?"
Her mother took a step closer, her eyes locking onto Yena’s. "I did it for you, Yena. For us."
Yena’s breath caught in her throat. "For us?"
Her mother nodded. "Sung Hwan is not just after power, Yena. He’s after immortality. But he needs something to anchor him to this world. That something is you."
Yena recoiled as though struck, her heart hammering in her chest. "What are you talking about?"
Her mother’s expression hardened. "You’re not just any gumiho, Yena. You were born to be the key. The key to unlocking the immortality he desires. But it will come at a price—your life, your soul."
Yena’s mind spun. All this time, she had been running, fighting, trying to protect herself, but she had never known that her very existence was the key to Sung Hwan’s power.
"I won’t let you use me," Yena said, her voice a whisper of defiance. "I won’t let him destroy everything I am."
Her mother stepped closer, reaching out a hand. "You don’t have a choice, Yena. He will come for you, and you can’t stop him."
Jun-ho stepped forward, his voice full of resolve. "We’ll stop him together."
Yena turned to him, her heart swelling with gratitude. He was right. She wasn’t alone anymore.
"This ends tonight," Yena said, her voice steady and strong. "I’ll fight. Even if it means destroying the one thing I’ve been searching for my whole life."
Her mother’s gaze softened, but her voice remained cold. "Then you’re already lost."
