Chapter 4

 The Game Behind the Competition

Kim Eun-ji and Baek Eun-woo had always been rivals.

Since childhood, they have competed over everything—grades, sports, even who could get to school first.

But one day, something strange happened.

Eun-woo stopped competing.

He didn’t rush to submit his exam first. He didn’t challenge her in debates. He didn’t even argue when she won the top spot in class.

He just… smiled.

That was when Eun-ji knew.

Something was wrong.

For weeks, Eun-woo acted weird.

He was still smug, still teasing—but something felt off.

Then one day, she overheard something that changed everything.

"I can’t believe he actually went through with the bet."*

Eun-ji froze.

A bet?

"Who would’ve thought Baek Eun-woo could fall for her?" someone whispered, laughing.

Her breath caught.

Fall for who?

She turned the corner—and saw a group of students giggling, not noticing her.

"He was so sure he’d never fall for her. Now look at him. He’s totally gone."*

Eun-ji’s heart raced.

They were talking about her.

That evening, she found Eun-woo lounging on the rooftop, watching the sunset like he didn’t have a care in the world.

"Baek Eun-woo."* she said, her voice sharp.

He turned, raising an eyebrow. "Wow, full name? I must be in trouble."*

She glared. "Tell me about the bet."*

For the first time—he flinched.

And that was all the confirmation she needed.

Her fists clenched. "What was it?"

Eun-woo sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "It was… stupid."*

"Tell me."*

A pause.

Then—he grinned.

"I bet that I would never fall for you."*

Silence.

Eun-ji’s heart stopped.

"And?" she demanded.

His smirk faded.

His eyes softened.

"I lost."*

Eun-ji stared.

Her greatest rival. The guy who spent years competing with her.

The guy who swore he’d never fall for her.

And yet—he had.

"So…" she crossed her arms, "You’re saying you like me?"

Eun-woo sighed, leaning back on his elbows. "Unfortunately."*

Eun-ji smirked. "You’re an idiot."*

"Yeah, yeah."* He ran a hand through his hair. "I’m guessing this is where you slap me and walk away?"

She tilted her head. "Hmm… I could do that. Or—"

She leaned in.

Close enough that he froze.

Close enough that she could hear his heartbeat speed up.

"I could make you regret ever making that bet."*

Eun-woo gulped.

And for the first time—he was the one speechless.

Eun-ji grinned.

Game. Set. Match.
