The day began with a palpable tension in the air as Clara sat with her friends, her coffee cooling untouched. Lyssara, ever the warm and bubbly one, leaned forward.
“Okay, Clara, spill it,” Lyssara said, her voice brimming with curiosity. Clara’s heart raced, and her fingers tightened around the cup she held, its warmth grounding her as a mix of apprehension and frustration bubbled under the surface. “What’s going on with you and Kaelion? One day you’re all smiles, and the next… it’s awkward central. Did you guys… break up or something?”
Clara’s cheeks flushed deep red, and she fidgeted with the hem of her sleeve. “Break up? We… we’re not even officially together. Not really. I don't know. It’s just… complicated.”
Sarah tilted her head, her perpetually lost expression giving way to genuine concern. “But what happened? You two seemed so close.”
Velira adjusted her glasses, her analytical gaze fixed on Clara. “Something clearly happened. Did he… say something to hurt you?”
Clara hesitated, torn between sharing her thoughts and keeping Kaelion’s behavior private. Eventually, she sighed, her voice quiet. “I… I don’t know. One moment, everything felt perfect. And then…” She trailed off, her eyes downcast. “We were… you know, getting closer, and he just… bolted. I don’t know what I did wrong. Maybe I was too forward. Maybe he is not attracted to me. Maybe zaylarans approach these things differently. What if I’ve ruined everything?”
Lyssara placed a comforting hand on Clara’s shoulder. “Oh, Clara, this doesn’t sound like a you problem. It’s more of a Kaelion problem.”
Velira nodded. “Agreed. From what we know, zaylarans aren’t that different when it comes to feelings. If anything, he’s probably overwhelmed.”
“But why?” Clara’s voice cracked. “Why wouldn’t he just talk to me?”
“Maybe he’s scared,” Sarah offered timidly. “Or doesn’t know what to say. Guys can be weird like that.”
The group offered a chorus of reassurances, but Clara still felt a gnawing uncertainty. She appreciated their support, though it did little to untangle the confusion in her heart. She sighed, wishing for clarity in the swirling storm of her emotions.
Later that evening, Emily cuddled up with Noah on one of the dorm couches, her head resting on his chest as they watched a movie. During a lull in the action, Emily tilted her head to look at him.
“Hey, babe? Do you know what’s going on with Kaelion?” she asked innocently, though her eyes sparkled with mischief. “Clara’s a wreck, and we’re all dying to know.”
Noah groaned, his head falling back against the couch. “Em, I can’t just… sell him out like that. It’s embarrassing.”
Emily pouted, a playful smile tugging at her lips. “Please? For me?”
He sighed, unable to resist her. “Fine. But you didn’t hear it from me.” He hesitated before continuing. “Kaelion… panicked. He’s overthinking everything. He has no clue how to… you know, be intimate with a human. So, he fled. But he knows he messed up and wants to fix it. He’s just… not sure how.”
Emily blinked, then burst out laughing. “Oh my gosh, that’s it? Poor Clara thinks she ruined everything, and he’s just scared of…?”
Noah chuckled, though he still looked sheepish. “Yeah, well, it’s a little more complicated than that. He’s trying to figure things out.”
Emily’s laughter softened. “Well, Clara’s confused and heartbroken. She’s blaming herself.”
“I’m not surprised,” Noah admitted. “I just hope they figure it out soon. It’s not good for either of them.”
Emily grinned. “I have an idea. Let’s invite them on a double date. Maybe it’ll help them relax.”
Noah frowned. “I don’t know if that’s the best idea.”
“Trust me,” Emily said, kissing his cheek. “It’ll work.”
The next day, during Ethics and Leadership class, Clara’s nerves were frayed. Kaelion had taken the seat next to hers, his usually stoic demeanor giving little away. To her surprise, he began making small gestures—leaning closer, subtly brushing his hand against hers. At first, she recoiled slightly, confused.
What is he doing? she wondered. He left me, and now he wants to hold my hand?
Yet, despite her confusion, she let his fingers intertwine with hers. The warmth of his touch was comforting, a silent reassurance that perhaps all wasn’t lost. Yet, beneath that comfort, Clara felt a storm of doubt and longing. She wanted to believe this small gesture could heal the chasm between them, but uncertainty gnawed at her resolve, leaving her torn between hope and skepticism. She glanced at him, but his expression remained unreadable.
Does he even realize how much he’s messing with my head? Clara thought, though she couldn’t deny the small flutter of hope in her chest.
After class, Emily and Noah approached them with broad smiles. “Hey, you two!” Emily said brightly. “Noah and I were thinking of hitting The Stardust Lounge tonight. Want to join us? You know, a double date?”
Kaelion’s ears twitched slightly, and to everyone’s surprise, he answered first. “Yes.” He turned to Clara, his gaze steady but hopeful. “If you would like to.”
Clara hesitated, then nodded. “Sure. That sounds nice.”
As Emily and Clara walked off, already buzzing with plans, Kaelion leaned toward Noah. “What… is a double date?”
Noah sighed. “You’ll see.”
That evening, the four of them headed to The Stardust Lounge. The pub’s cozy ambiance and dim lighting provided a relaxing backdrop, with human craft beers and shimmering zaylaran glow drinks adding a unique touch. The warm hum of chatter mixed with the faint sound of jazz music in the background created a perfect setting for easing nerves.
At first, the silence between Clara and Kaelion was palpable. Emily, ever the social butterfly, broke the ice. “So, Clara, what do you two usually talk about?”
Clara smiled nervously. “Oh, you know, the program, our hobbies, life. Mostly, I talk, and Kaelion listens.”
Kaelion nodded in agreement, his lips twitching into a faint smile. Slowly, the tension eased, and they all began to enjoy themselves. Kaelion remained quiet but attentive, his eyes rarely leaving Clara. Occasionally, he would ask a question about her interests, his earnestness evident in his tone. The barriers between them began to fade, and Clara found herself relaxing in his presence.
By the time they left the pub, Clara’s heart felt lighter. Kaelion’s quiet gestures, his occasional awkwardness—it all reminded her of why she’d been drawn to him in the first place.
Back at the dorms, Noah and Emily went inside first, leaving Clara and Kaelion alone under the soft glow of the porch light. They stood in silence, the awkwardness thick in the air. The faint chirping of crickets provided a soothing backdrop as Clara tried to gather her thoughts.
Finally, Kaelion took a deep breath and spoke. “I am… sorry.”
Clara blinked, her cheeks flushing. “What?”
“For… leaving,” he said, his voice low. “I… panicked. I did not want to hurt you.”
Clara’s heart raced her emotions a mix of confusion and hope. “You… you didn’t hurt me, Kaelion. I was just… confused.”
He stepped closer, his golden eyes searching hers. “I want to make it right.”
Before she could respond, he leaned in slowly, giving her plenty of time to pull away. When she didn’t, his lips met hers in a deep, heartfelt kiss. Clara melted into him, her hands resting lightly on his chest as all her doubts faded. At that moment, she knew—Kaelion cared, even if he struggled to show it.
