The evening air was thick with tension, both in the room and between Ana and Aashu. The rehearsal hall, dimly lit by a single overhead light, seemed to stretch endlessly into the shadows. The dance floor had become their battleground, where every movement between them felt charged, like the air before a storm.
Aashu’s eyes were fixed on Ana, his usual cocky grin replaced by something more serious, almost contemplative. He stood in front of her, muscles taut with anticipation, hands at his sides, waiting for her to make the first move. But Ana hesitated, her gaze dropping to the floor as if she could find answers in the cracks of the wooden floorboards.
It had been weeks since their first real rehearsal together, weeks since that near-kiss during their earlier sessions. And the tension between them had only grown since then, thick and palpable. Every time their hands brushed, every time their eyes locked, there was this spark that neither could ignore. It was like they were being pulled toward each other, drawn by some unseen force that neither of them fully understood. And tonight, in the quiet of the rehearsal space, it was as if that pull had reached its breaking point.
“Why are you holding back, Ana?” Aashu’s voice broke through the silence, low and steady. There was something raw in his tone, something that made Ana’s heart race. “We both know what’s been building up between us.”
Ana swallowed, her throat dry. She had been trying to keep her distance, trying to ignore the growing pull between them. She didn’t want to be distracted, not now. Not when so much was at stake. But it was becoming impossible.
“You don’t understand, Aashu,” Ana said, her voice trembling despite herself. She turned her back to him, pacing slowly across the floor. “I can’t… I can’t let myself get distracted. We’re not just two people here, we’re part of something much bigger. You don’t know the dangers—”
“I don’t care about the dangers, Ana,” Aashu cut in, his voice louder now, more insistent. He took a step forward, his presence overwhelming her, like he was everywhere at once. “I care about you. I care about us.”
Ana turned to face him, her chest heaving as her emotions threatened to spill over. “You don’t know what you’re saying.”
“I know exactly what I’m saying,” Aashu replied, his eyes searching hers. “I know that I can’t keep pretending that this…” He gestured between them, his hand sweeping through the air, “this doesn’t mean anything. Because it does. And I don’t care about the prophecy or the dangers or whatever it is that’s pulling us apart. I care about you, Ana.”
Ana’s heart pounded in her chest, the words he spoke echoing in her mind, but she couldn’t bring herself to say them out loud. She was terrified. Terrified of the power he had over her, terrified of the way he made her feel. She couldn’t afford to be vulnerable. Not now. Not with everything that was at stake.
“I’m not like you, Aashu,” Ana whispered, her voice breaking. “I can’t just let go. I can’t just let myself fall for you. My powers… they’re too dangerous. And you… you’re the protector. If something happens to you, I’ll never forgive myself.”
Aashu’s expression softened, his eyes filled with understanding, but there was something else there too—a flicker of something deeper. “Ana, you don’t have to carry this alone. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. And I’m not afraid of you or your powers.”
Ana felt her breath catch in her throat. His words were too much, too real. How could he say that so easily? Didn’t he understand the danger he was putting himself in? Didn’t he know that their connection was fated? That if they crossed certain lines, there would be no going back?
But the truth was, the moment she had seen him, the moment their paths had crossed in this chaotic world, she had felt it too. She had felt the pull. The undeniable attraction. It was something beyond her control, beyond the logical side of her mind. And now, standing in front of him, her resolve was crumbling.
“Aashu…” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I can’t—”
Before she could finish, Aashu closed the gap between them, his hands cupping her face gently, as if he was afraid she might disappear if he touched her too firmly. His thumb brushed across her cheek, sending a wave of heat through her skin.
And then, without another word, he leaned in, his lips capturing hers in a kiss that was at once soft and desperate, full of longing and unspoken words. It was as if the world outside no longer existed, as if nothing else mattered but the feeling of his mouth on hers, the warmth of his body against hers.
Ana’s heart raced, her hands trembling as she placed them on his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart beneath her fingers. She could taste the determination in his kiss, the way he was pouring all of his feelings into it, as if he was finally letting go of all the doubts and fears that had held him back.
Her breath hitched in her throat as the kiss deepened, as he pulled her closer, her body pressed against his in a way that made her head spin. Every nerve in her body seemed to come alive, the heat between them igniting something inside her that she had buried for so long.
But just as quickly as it had started, Ana pulled back, her hands pushing against his chest, her breathing ragged. “No,” she whispered, her voice shaky. “We can’t—this can’t happen.”
Aashu looked at her, his face a mixture of frustration and understanding. “Ana, why are you pulling away? Why can’t you just let yourself feel this?”
“Because I’m scared,” she said, her voice cracking. “I’m scared of what this means. I’m scared of what it’ll cost us. You don’t understand. I can’t let you in. Not like this. Not when everything is so… messed up.”
Aashu’s expression softened, and he gently cupped her face in his hands, brushing away the tears that had begun to fall. “Ana, I don’t care about the consequences. I don’t care about the prophecy or whatever future we’re supposed to have. All I care about is you. And I’ll fight for us. I’ll fight for you, no matter what.”
Ana closed her eyes, the weight of his words sinking deep into her heart. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that they could overcome everything—that their love could defy the odds. But the fear was still there, lingering, gnawing at her.
And then, like a storm breaking, Sera’s voice cut through the air, interrupting the moment. “You two are hopeless,” Sera said from the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest, a mischievous grin playing at the corners of her mouth. “You’re both dancing around each other, trying to fight what’s right in front of you.”
Ana pulled away from Aashu, her face flushed, embarrassed by how exposed she felt. “Sera, what are you doing here?”
Sera walked into the room, her eyes flicking between them, an almost knowing look in her gaze. “I’ve been watching you two for weeks. You’re both acting like you don’t know what’s happening between you. It’s obvious to anyone who’s paying attention.”
Ana’s heart sank. “What are you talking about?”
Sera’s smile widened. “Aashu, you’re not just her protector. You’re part of the prophecy, just like she is. You two are fated to be together. No matter how much you try to fight it, this connection is bigger than both of you.”
Ana’s head spun, and Aashu’s eyes widened as the reality of Sera’s words hit him.
“Aashu,” Sera said, her voice softer now, “this connection? It’s not just about you protecting her. It’s about you both learning to embrace the power that comes with it. And that kiss? It was just the beginning. Trust me.”
Ana felt a shiver run down her spine, her mind racing to process everything. Aashu’s hand found hers again, and for the first time in a long time, she didn’t pull away.
“You’re right, Sera,” Aashu said, his voice steady. “It’s time I stop fighting this. Whatever comes next, I’m ready.”
Ana looked at him, her heart racing once again. She wasn’t sure if she was ready, but she knew one thing—she didn’t want to face whatever was coming alone.
