Anaya stood alone in the empty dance studio, the silence echoing her thoughts. Her fingers traced the worn wooden floor where countless dancers before her had poured their souls into movement. This place, sacred and serene, was where Anaya felt closest to her parents, where their memory lingered in every graceful turn and every heartfelt step.
She exhaled deeply, the air heavy with the weight of an unfulfilled promise.
Flashback
Anaya, a young girl of ten, stood in front of her parents, her eyes wide with excitement. Her hands clutched a brightly colored flyer announcing the annual school dance competition.
"Mama, Papa, will you come to see me dance this year?" she asked, her voice filled with hope.
Her father knelt down, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. "Of course, sweetheart. We wouldn't miss it for the world," he promised.
Her mother nodded, smiling warmly. "We’ll be right there in the front row, cheering the loudest."
But they never got the chance to keep that promise.
Present Day
Anaya closed her eyes, trying to banish the painful memories. The annual school function was approaching again, and with it came the dread of standing on that stage without her parents in the audience.
She had always performed solo, a tribute to the promise her parents had made. But this year, everything had changed. There would be no solo dance. Instead, she had been paired with Aashutosh for a couple dance—a decision that filled her with a mixture of anxiety and frustration.
The bell rang, signaling the end of the day, and Anaya gathered her things, heading to the rehearsal hall. As she approached, she could hear the muffled sound of music and the familiar cadence of Aashutosh's voice.
"Let's get this over with," Anaya muttered to herself, steeling her nerves.
She pushed the door open and found Aashutosh already warming up, his movements fluid and confident. He noticed her entrance and smirked. "Finally decided to show up, huh?"
Anaya ignored his comment, setting her bag down and tying her hair back. "Let’s just start."
Aashutosh walked over, standing too close for her comfort. "You know, for someone who’s supposed to be a mind reader, you’re really hard to figure out."
Anaya shot him a glare. "What are you talking about?"
He leaned in, lowering his voice. "You can read everyone else’s mind, but not mine. Why do you think that is?"
Anaya’s heart skipped a beat. How did he know? She had always been careful, always avoided drawing attention to her abilities.
"Maybe you're just not that interesting," she retorted, trying to keep her voice steady.
Aashutosh chuckled, unfazed. "Or maybe I'm just special."
"Specially annoying," she muttered under her breath.
Despite the tension between them, the rehearsal proceeded with a surprising ease. Their bodies moved in sync, guided by the music and a rhythm that seemed to transcend their animosity.
But even as they danced, Anaya's mind raced with questions. How could Aashutosh be immune to her powers? And more importantly, why did she feel this inexplicable connection to him, one that both terrified and intrigued her?
As the music ended, Aashutosh held her close, their faces inches apart. His eyes searched hers, filled with something she couldn't quite decipher.
"Looks like we might actually pull this off," he said softly, breaking the silence.
Anaya pulled away quickly, putting distance between them. "Don't get used to it."
She grabbed her bag and hurried out of the hall, her heart pounding in her chest. Whatever was happening between them, it was only just beginning.
In the coming days, as the function approached, the tension between Anaya and Aashutosh would only grow. But so would their connection, pushing them both toward a destiny neither could foresee.
