A clash of minds

The bell rang, signaling the start of another day at Ravenswood High. Anaya walked through the bustling corridors, her senses overwhelmed by the thoughts of those around her. She could hear everything—the excitement, the worries, the whispers about the upcoming annual function. It was a gift and a curse, this ability to hear the unspoken, but she had learned to navigate it over the years.

Except for one mind.

Anaya’s gaze flicked towards Aashutosh Rao, standing with his friends near the lockers, his confident laughter cutting through the noise. His mind was a blank slate to her, a silence she couldn’t penetrate, and that unsettled her. Everyone else was an open book, but Aashutosh remained a mystery.

"Hey, Ana!" Sera Verma called out, bounding over to her side. "You okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost."

Anaya shook her head, pulling her thoughts back to the present. "I’m fine. Just... the usual."

Sera nodded knowingly. "Must be exhausting, hearing everyone all the time. Except for him." She tilted her head toward Aashutosh, smirking. "Still can't read Aashu’s mind, huh?"

"No," Anaya admitted, her voice tinged with frustration. "And it's infuriating."

Sera laughed. "Maybe that’s why you two can’t stand each other. He’s like your kryptonite."

"More like a constant thorn in my side," Anaya muttered as they walked to class.

The announcement for the annual function came during the morning assembly. The principal's voice echoed through the auditorium, informing the students about the couple dance that replaced the traditional solo performances.

The room buzzed with excitement, but Anaya felt a pang of disappointment. Her solo performances had always been a tribute to her late parents, a way to keep their memory alive. The thought of sharing the stage with someone else, especially someone like Aashutosh, made her uneasy.

In the afternoon, the list of dance pairings was posted on the notice board. Students crowded around, eager to see who they would be dancing with. Anaya hung back, hesitant to face the inevitable.

"Come on, let’s check it out," Sera urged, pulling her toward the board.

As they pushed through the crowd, Anaya’s eyes scanned the list until they landed on her name.

Anaya Oberoi and Aashutosh Rao.

Her heart sank. Fate had a cruel sense of humor.

"No way," she whispered, her hands clenching into fists.

Behind her, a familiar voice spoke, dripping with mockery. "Guess we’re stuck together, Oberoi."

Anaya turned to see Aashutosh, a smug grin on his face. "This should be... interesting."

Anaya narrowed her eyes, her annoyance flaring. "Interesting isn’t the word I’d use."

Aashutosh raised an eyebrow, his gaze challenging. "Scared you won’t be the center of attention this time?"

"Scared you can’t keep up," she shot back.

Their verbal sparring drew the attention of nearby students, who watched with interest, sensing the tension between the two.

"Let’s just get through this without killing each other," Anaya muttered, brushing past him.

Aashutosh’s laughter followed her as she walked away, his presence lingering in her thoughts like an unwelcome shadow.

The next day, Anaya arrived at the dance studio for their first practice session, dreading the confrontation ahead. Aashutosh was already there, stretching, his casual confidence grating on her nerves.

"You’re late," he said without looking up.

Anaya ignored the jab, setting her bag down and taking her place on the dance floor. The music started, and they moved into position, their bodies stiff with tension.

Their first attempt was disastrous. Anaya’s frustration grew with every misstep, the silence of Aashutosh’s mind unnerving her more than ever. She couldn’t anticipate his moves or adjust to his rhythm, something she had never experienced with anyone else.

"Relax," Aashutosh said, sensing her agitation. "You’re overthinking it."

"I can’t read your mind," she blurted out, the words escaping before she could stop them.

Aashutosh paused, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. "You... what?"

Anaya felt her cheeks heat up, realizing she had revealed more than she intended. "Never mind. Let’s just dance."

But the damage was done. Aashutosh watched her with newfound curiosity, the wheels turning in his mind as they resumed their practice. Anaya could feel his gaze, making it harder to focus.

By the end of the session, they were both exhausted, their frustration palpable. Aashutosh leaned against the wall, wiping the sweat from his brow.

"This isn’t working," he said, exasperated. "We need to find a way to sync up."

Anaya sighed, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. "Maybe if you weren’t so infuriating, it would be easier."

Aashutosh smirked, a glint of mischief in his eyes. "Admit it, Oberoi, you’re just mad because you can’t control this."

Anaya glared at him, her fists clenching at her sides. "I don’t need to control you, Rao. I just need to tolerate you long enough to get through this dance."

"Then let’s make a deal," Aashutosh said, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a low murmur. "We call a truce. No more fighting, just focus on the dance. Deal?"

Anaya hesitated, her pride warring with her desire to succeed. Finally, she nodded, extending her hand. "Deal."

Aashutosh took her hand, the contact sending a jolt through her. "Let’s make this the best dance this school has ever seen."

Anaya pulled her hand away, her resolve hardening. "You better keep up, Rao."

As they left the studio, Anaya couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something far more complex than she had anticipated.
