The days that followed were a blur of rehearsals, meetings, and the constant buzz of being on the brink of something big. Elise and Alexandra worked harder than ever, refining their sound under Vanessa’s watchful eye. But despite their outward focus, both of them knew something had shifted between them. It was in the way their interactions seemed to crackle with an energy that neither of them knew how to handle.
Elise would catch Alexandra glancing at her during breaks, her eyes darting away as soon as their gazes met, and it sent an unfamiliar flutter through Elise’s chest. She’d never been this aware of the other woman’s presence before. And it wasn’t just when they were working together. It was in the quiet moments between songs, the casual conversations after sessions, the unspoken things that hung in the air like the faintest note in a melody.
The worst part was, Elise couldn’t figure out why her heart raced in those moments. She’d known Alexandra for so long. They were friends. Bandmates. Partners. So why was her body reacting this way now?
Elise stood in front of the mirror in her small apartment, adjusting her shirt for the hundredth time. Tonight was another industry event, one where they were supposed to perform a new track they’d been perfecting. But all she could think about was how she’d spent the entire morning trying to avoid Alexandra’s eyes. And now, as the time to meet her at the venue drew closer, she felt the same nervous energy building in her chest.
She had to get a grip. This wasn’t like her. She didn’t get nervous. She didn’t second-guess herself.
But there it was, this strange tension between them that she couldn’t explain. It felt like they were both walking a tightrope, neither willing to step off it but neither quite knowing how to reach the other side.
With a deep breath, she pulled on her jacket and headed out, her mind swirling with all the things she didn’t want to think about.
When Elise arrived at the venue, she was greeted by Julian, who ushered her backstage with a grin.
“Ready for tonight?” he asked, giving her a quick pat on the back.
“I think so,” Elise replied, trying to shake off the nerves gnawing at her stomach. “Where’s Alexandra?”
“Getting ready,” Julian said, his tone knowing. “She’s been a little off today, hasn’t she?”
Elise nodded absently. She hadn’t been the only one feeling the shift, then. Alexandra’s usual confidence seemed a little more reserved today, and every time their paths crossed, it was as if a wordless conversation was happening between them, one neither of them was willing to start.
“Maybe you should talk to her,” Julian suggested with a wink before he turned and disappeared into the crowd.
Elise watched him go, his words echoing in her mind. Talk to her? About what? About the fact that her heart pounded every time Alexandra was near? About how she could hardly focus when Alexandra’s gaze lingered on her for just a moment too long?
No. She wasn’t ready for that. Neither was Alexandra.
She paced for a few minutes, gathering herself before stepping into the green room. The soft hum of conversation filled the space, but it fell away when she spotted Alexandra across the room. She was adjusting her jacket in front of a mirror, her expression distant. When she caught sight of Elise, she offered a smile, though it was tinged with something that made Elise’s heart skip.
“Hey,” Alexandra greeted, her voice light but lacking the usual spark.
“Hey,” Elise said, her voice tight as she stepped closer.
For a moment, neither of them spoke, and the silence between them felt heavier than it should have. Elise fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, unable to meet Alexandra’s eyes for more than a fleeting second.
“You okay?” Alexandra finally asked, her voice soft but filled with concern.
Elise nodded quickly, perhaps too quickly. “Yeah, yeah. Just thinking about the performance.”
“Yeah. Me too.” Alexandra looked down, her fingers tracing the fabric of her jacket, her lips pressed together in thought. “I don’t know… I’ve been feeling off lately. Like something’s… different.”
Elise’s heart pounded in her chest, the words too close to what she’d been thinking. It was like they were both walking around a truth neither of them was ready to say aloud.
“Yeah, me too,” Elise murmured, barely above a whisper.
Alexandra looked at her then, her eyes soft but searching. “Do you think… we’re doing the right thing? With everything? With the band, with the music… with us?”
The question hung in the air, unspoken but loud. It was the question they had both been avoiding, the one neither of them could answer without it threatening to break everything.
“I think we’re doing what we’re supposed to,” Elise said, her voice a little more uncertain than she intended. She took a step closer, her fingers brushing against the edge of Alexandra’s sleeve. “But…”
Her breath hitched, and for a moment, she couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence. There were too many things she couldn’t say. Too many things that were too dangerous to speak.
But Alexandra seemed to sense the hesitation. She shifted slightly, stepping back, her eyes widening for a split second, as if startled by the tension that had just thickened between them.
“Yeah,” Alexandra finally said, her voice barely audible. “Yeah, I think so too.”
And with that, the moment passed, slipping away like water between their fingers. The two of them stood there, caught in the silence of all the things neither of them dared to voice.
The performance began soon after, and Elise pushed all the feelings swirling inside her down. She focused on the music. She focused on the audience, the lights, the sound. She had to. If she didn’t, she knew she might drown in the confusion of it all.
But even as they took the stage, and the music filled the room, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed between them. That the unspoken chord that had always tied them together had shifted, vibrating with a tension neither of them knew how to resolve.
As the final note of their set rang out, Elise found herself searching for Alexandra in the crowd. Their eyes met briefly, and in that fleeting moment, Elise could feel the weight of everything unspoken between them.
She didn’t know what it meant. She didn’t know what would happen next.
But as the applause washed over them, all Elise could think about was how her heart was still pounding—and how Alexandra’s was, too.
