...Chapter Sixteen: Unexpected Encounters...
“Everything’s done by now. It’s better to have lunch first.”
Damian muttered to himself, shutting his laptop after completing his work.
He stood up from his desk and adjusted his chair, preparing to leave. The hot weather made him reluctant to wear his jacket, but the sun’s harsh rays could damage his skin, and he wasn't one for carrying an umbrella.
Damian opened the door, intending to step outside, but as his gaze landed in front of him, he saw her again.
The student he had made eye contact with twice before.
Ah, it’s the girl from earlier.
He thought as he closed the door behind him, still watching her.
She was standing by herself, gazing down at the campus.
Why is she always alone? Doesn’t she have any friends?
He wondered, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
She’s such a mysterious girl. What was her name again?
He paused for a moment, trying to recall.
Ah, right. Selene…
Selene Lanesse.
Before he could continue his train of thought, something unexpected happened: Selene lifted her head and met his gaze directly. It was the third time they had locked eyes, and this time, it was sharper than before.
Damian maintained his composure, though inside, he was slightly surprised, even a little embarrassed. But he quickly masked it, turning away and walking down the hallway without a second glance.
Selene, on the other hand, was stunned. She couldn’t understand why he had been staring at her for so long.
What’s wrong with him?!
She thought, her mind racing as she tried to figure out what had just happened.
___
The lunch break ended with the sound of the bell, signaling that it was time for the students to return to their respective classes. Selene walked into the classroom for her third subject, still quiet as always. She sat down at her desk, seemingly alone in the world.
“Hey, Selene! Let’s be seatmates!”
Gelly called out, suddenly appearing beside her.
“I almost forgot we’re classmates. Sorry I didn’t greet you this morning.”
Selene gave her a genuine smile and playfully responded.
“Haha, sure. I guess you’ve already forgotten about your friend, huh?”
Gelly laughed and sat down next to her.
“It’s not like that, you know.”
Before Selene could respond further, their teacher entered. He walked in quietly, and Peril, sitting nearby, shot Gelly a warning look, signaling her to keep quiet.
“Huh?”
Gelly wondered, not understanding Peril’s subtle hint.
“Look.”
Selene murmured, turning Gelly’s head toward the front.
“S-sir Damian.”
Gelly stuttered, her voice barely above a whisper. She giggled awkwardly, and the room fell silent as Damian prepared his desk for the lesson.
Damian’s classroom was sleek and futuristic, outfitted with holographic displays and interactive desks. He stood at the front of the class in his teaching attire, adjusting his laptop as the students settled in. Selene observed him carefully from her seat, her gaze unwavering as he prepared to speak.
Damian cleared his throat and adjusted his glasses, exuding confidence. His smirk gave off a cool, attractive aura that immediately caught the attention of several girls in the room. Selene noticed her classmates whispering to each other in awe.
“Good afternoon, everyone.”
Damian began, his voice calm but authoritative.
“I’m Damian Givson, and welcome to the first class of the Chrono-Physics module. In this course, we’ll explore the fundamental principles of time, space, and how they interconnect in the fabric of our universe.”
The students quieted down, their full attention now on him. Selene continued to watch, maintaining eye contact, even though Damian wasn’t looking at her directly.
Damian tapped the screen behind him, displaying an image of a spinning clock.
“To start, we need to challenge the idea that time is linear,”
He explained, his voice engaging.
“Most people think of time as something that simply moves forward, one moment after another. But in Chrono-Physics, we ask: What if it doesn’t?”
He gestured to a holographic diagram showing overlapping timelines.
“What if time can fold back on itself?”
He continued.
The class sat in silence, the students trying to grasp the complexity of the idea, some still unsure of the point he was making.
Damian chuckled softly, noticing their confused expressions.
“Why does everyone look so serious? Don’t you like this kind of subject?”
Selene, looking down at her desk, overheard her classmates whispering among themselves.
“Oh my god, Sir Damian is so handsome.”
She was about to ask a question but hesitated. Participating in class wasn’t really her thing anymore. She preferred to observe quietly.
Just then, a student raised his hand.
“Excuse me, sir?”
Damian turned his attention to the boy.
“Yes?”
He asked, acknowledging him.
The student blurted out.
“Can we not just start today’s lesson? After all it was the first day haha, also we still don’t really know you well.”
The classroom went quiet, and all eyes were on the boy. Surprisingly, Damian didn’t react negatively or insult him. Instead, he chuckled at the boy’s boldness.
To be continued...
