Chapter 14

...Chapter Fourteen: Unspoken Encounters...

“Ah… Haha. I see, I see.”

Peril repeated her words, her tone shaky and awkward as Selene’s unwavering gaze bore into her. Selene’s posture was firm, exuding a commanding presence that felt strangely intimidating.

“Why are you laughing so awkwardly? Did I say something strange earlier?”

Selene asked, her brows knitting together in confusion. Her face moved closer to Peril’s, searching for answers.

“Ah, no, no!”

Peril stammered, waving her hands between them as she instinctively stepped back, trying to regain some distance. Her cheeks flushed a light pink, betraying her discomfort.

“It’s not that… but…”

She straightened her posture, taking a deep breath to steady herself before continuing.

“It’s just… Sir Damian is already married.”

Peril’s eyes shifted toward Damian, who was approaching their direction.

“And?”

Selene’s voice was calm, her expression unreadable. Her sharp gaze flicked toward Damian, her face betraying a hint of judgment as she studied him from head to toe.

“And what does that have to do with me?”

Peril hesitated, her voice faltering under Selene’s piercing tone.

“Well… I just think they should respect Sir Damian’s wife, right?”

“Respect…”

Selene repeated the word under her breath, her lips curling into a faint, humorless chuckle.

But once a human desires something, they’ll go to any length to possess it—even if it means breaking the rules.

Her thoughts wandered, her eyes unconsciously locking onto Damian.

___

Damian, busy chatting with a co-worker, suddenly felt a sharp sensation, as though someone were watching him. His smile faltered slightly as he instinctively turned his head toward the source.

His gaze met Selene’s.

'What’s with her?'

He thought, momentarily caught off guard. The girl felt familiar, and then he remembered: Selene, one of the school’s most accomplished students. Her reputation for intelligence preceded her, making her name known even to someone like him.

For three long seconds, their eyes remained locked in silent communication. Neither of them moved, the moment heavy and unexplained.

Selene was the first to break the connection. Her head turned abruptly, severing the gaze.

Did I just stare into his eyes for that long?

Her cheeks tinged with embarrassment at the thought. Without thinking, she slapped herself lightly, as if to snap out of her daze.

“Hey, are you okay?”

Peril’s voice brought Selene back to reality. She glanced at her friend, startled, but Damian, now fully aware of her sudden actions, chuckled softly from a distance.

“I’m fine,”

Selene replied hastily, brushing it off.

“I think we should find our classroom now.”

Before Peril could respond, Selene grabbed her hand and began pulling her along, her pace brisk and urgent.

“Wait, what’s going on?”

Peril asked, bewildered by Selene’s abrupt behavior.

Selene didn’t answer. Her thoughts churned restlessly as her feet carried her forward.

What the heck is this? Am I embarrassed?

The unfamiliar emotion gnawed at her, leaving her unsettled and deeply introspective.
