The Earth Guardians’ base was a place of silent tension. Chloe was still angry at Kane. Despite Bruce’s recovery, Chloe couldn’t shake the image of Kane’s violent transformation, his primal fury that nearly killed their teammate. She kept her distance, focusing on her tech as a way to avoid the issue, but it weighed heavily on her heart.
Bruce, now healed and walking with a slight limp, was trying to keep things light. “It’s all good, Chloe,” he said with a smile, though his eyes were still wary around Kane. “I’m fine. It’s in the past.”
Chloe barely looked up as she worked on her latest project. “That’s not the point, Bruce. I can’t forgive Kane for what he did to you.”
Kane stood nearby, silent, his eyes downcast. The words cut deeper than any physical injury ever could. He tried to speak, but the weight of Chloe’s anger kept him quiet.
Then Chloe shocked everyone with words that sent a dagger through Kane’s heart. “I love Bruce.”
Kane froze, his breath caught in his throat. His mind raced. The woman he cared about more than anything had just confessed love for another. The pain was almost too much to bear. His emotions, already raw from the previous encounter, threatened to overwhelm him.
Feeling like he couldn’t stand the weight of it anymore, Kane turned and walked out of the room. The world felt crushing as he reached the edge of the rooftop, staring down at the city below.
That was when Sharpshooter, the archer who had joined their team after a previous fight, appeared beside him. “You’re not the first person to feel like this, you know,” Sharpshooter said calmly, his voice steady. “But it’s not the end of the world. Don’t make it your ending.”
Kane looked up at him, his amber eyes filled with pain. “I can’t stand it. She… she doesn’t want me. She loves him.”
Sharpshooter leaned against the railing, crossing his arms. “You think it’s the end just because she said that? Trust me, it’s not. You’ll work through it, or maybe she’ll come to see things differently. But don’t throw your life away over it.”
Kane was silent for a long moment, the weight of Sharpshooter’s words sinking in.
Before he could reply, alarms went off across the base. Dr. Havoc’s latest creation—a massive robotic monster—was rampaging through the city. The Earth Guardians scrambled to prepare, knowing that their next fight wouldn’t be easy.
The battle was chaotic. The robot’s strength was formidable, its metallic body nearly indestructible. Speedstar was already in motion, zipping around the battlefield and attacking the robot’s weak points. Supernova and Bruce joined forces, their powers combining in blasts of light and energy.
But in the middle of the fight, disaster struck. The robot managed to get a lucky shot, sending Bruce flying across the field. He hit the ground hard, groaning in pain.
“Bruce!” Chloe shouted, her heart stopping as she rushed to his side. “Are you okay? I can’t lose you!” Her voice broke as she knelt beside him, checking for injuries.
Bruce, though battered, smiled weakly. “I’m okay, Chloe. I’m fine.”
But Kane, watching the scene unfold, felt his anger flare. His emotions, already a tangled mess, pushed him over the edge. His transformation was swift. Lycantros, the beast within, erupted as his body grew and changed, fueled by rage. He tore through the battlefield, attacking the robot with savage strength.
“You’re not taking him from me!” Kane roared, his claws tearing into the robot’s metal exterior. His blows landed with crushing force, and the robot staggered under the onslaught.
But the monster’s power was still overwhelming, and the fight raged on. Supernova swooped in, using his celestial abilities to lift the robot into the air.
“Kane, get back!” Supernova shouted, his voice firm. “We need to finish this now!”
Kane’s eyes flashed with anger, but Sharpshooter appeared beside him, placing a steady hand on his shoulder. “Control yourself. Don’t let it consume you.”
Kane’s chest heaved, his wolf form still raging. But the words of Sharpshooter cut through his fury. Slowly, reluctantly, Kane began to calm down, his muscles loosening as he returned to his human form.
In the final moments of the battle, Supernova used his light beams to push the robot high into the atmosphere. With a final effort, he hurled the robot into the sun, watching as it burned away in a flash of light.
The team stood, breathing heavily from the fight. Chloe helped Bruce to his feet, her eyes still filled with concern. But Kane stood off to the side, still troubled by what had transpired between him and Chloe.
Sharpshooter watched from a distance, a quiet understanding in his eyes. “You’ve got time, Kane. It’s not the end of the world.”
Kane nodded, but the question still burned inside him—could he ever be enough for Chloe?
