chapter 2

Bound by Fate

Chapter 2: Sparks of Chaos

Kavi woke up one morning to the sound of chaos echoing through the Rathore mansion. A crash in the kitchen, muffled curses, and the faint smell of something burning filled the air. Wrapping her shawl tightly around her shoulders, she followed the commotion to find Veer in the middle of an epic culinary disaster.

“What in the world are you doing?” Kavi asked, arms crossed, trying not to laugh at the sight of the mafia kingpin covered in flour and what appeared to be... egg yolk?

Veer turned, sheepish but defensive. “I’m making breakfast. Thought I’d give the chef a break.”

“And what about the fire department? Should we call them too?” she teased, gesturing to the smoking pan behind him.

He groaned, tossing the burnt remnants into the sink. “Alright, laugh it up. I just thought—”

“That you could impress me?” Kavi interjected with a raised brow.

Veer smirked. “I don’t need to impress you. You’re already stuck with me.”

Despite herself, Kavi couldn’t suppress a small smile. It was moments like this, tucked between their usual arguments, that made her question everything she thought she knew about Veer.

A Morning of Surprises

Their unspoken truce was short-lived when the doorbell rang. Veer frowned. “We’re not expecting anyone.”

Kavi peeked out the window to see a middle-aged man standing with a sheepish grin and a basket of mangoes. “It’s Babu Uncle!” she exclaimed, opening the door.

Babu Uncle, a jovial family friend of the Mehtas, was known for his habit of dropping by unannounced. Veer’s jaw tightened as the older man strode in, slapping his back as though they were lifelong friends.

“Veer beta! Heard you got married and didn’t invite me? Shame, shame!” Babu Uncle declared, plopping onto the couch and digging into the mangoes.

“Well, it was... a small affair,” Veer replied through gritted teeth, clearly unaccustomed to Babu Uncle’s exuberance.

Kavi, meanwhile, found the entire exchange hilarious. Watching Veer squirm under Babu Uncle’s relentless chattiness was pure entertainment. She settled into an armchair, enjoying the spectacle.

When Babu Uncle finally left, Veer turned to Kavi with an exhausted expression. “Does he always talk that much?”

“Always,” Kavi replied, grinning. “You’ll get used to him.”

“Great,” Veer muttered. “One more thing to look forward to.”

A Brewing Storm

Later that day, Rani and Savita called the couple to the living room. Rani’s face was unusually serious as she handed Veer a piece of paper. “We need to talk.”

Veer scanned the note, his brow furrowing. It was a veiled threat from a rival gang, warning of an imminent attack on the Rathore estate. Kavi leaned over his shoulder to read it, her expression hardening.

“This isn’t just about you anymore,” Kavi said, her voice firm. “They’ll target everyone in this house.”

Veer nodded, his usual cocky demeanor replaced by a steely resolve. “I’ll handle it.”

But Kavi wasn’t about to let him take all the responsibility. “We’ll handle it,” she corrected, meeting his gaze.

Rani watched the exchange with a small, knowing smile. “It’s good to see you two finally working together,” she said, patting Kavi’s shoulder. “Beta, I always knew you’d bring balance to this family.”

As the family prepared for the worst, Kavi and Veer found themselves spending more time together, strategizing and organizing security. And while the threat loomed, they couldn’t help but fall into a rhythm, their banter now tinged with a surprising warmth.

One night, as they reviewed plans in Veer’s office, Kavi looked up from the map spread across the desk. “You’re not as bad as I thought, you know,” she said, her tone light but sincere.

Veer raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “Careful, Kavi. That almost sounded like a compliment.”

“Don’t let it go to your head,” she shot back, but her smile betrayed her.

For the first time, they weren’t just tolerating each other—they were beginning to understand one another.
