Blair sat in the corner of her penthouse, the invitation to Vincent’s gala lying on the coffee table like a ticking time bomb. The pristine white card bore her name in elegant script, but the message beneath was anything but subtle:
“Join us tomorrow night. Let’s put an end to this game, shall we?”
Lena, now mask-free and visibly shaken, paced the room. “This is a trap. You know that, right? He’s baiting you, Blair.”
Blair twirled a pen in her fingers, her face calm despite the storm raging in her mind. “Of course it’s a trap. But if Vincent wants me to walk into his lion’s den, then I’ll make sure he regrets it.”
Jax leaned against the wall, arms crossed. “You can’t seriously be thinking of going.”
“Oh, I’m going,” Blair said, her voice steady. “But I won’t be going as myself.”
The team gathered in the command center, a hidden room in Blair’s penthouse filled with high-tech screens and equipment. Kai pulled up a blueprint of the gala venue, an opulent hotel owned by one of Vincent’s shell companies.
“The ballroom is the main event space,” Kai explained. “Vincent will likely be surrounded by his security detail, and you can bet there will be undercover operatives in the crowd.”
Maya pointed to a smaller room adjacent to the ballroom. “This is the control room. If we can access it, we can disable the surveillance system and monitor Vincent’s movements.”
Blair studied the layout, her mind already working through the logistics. “I’ll go in as a guest. Lena, you’ll take my place in case anyone recognizes me.”
Lena’s eyes widened. “You want me to wear the mask again?”
Blair nodded. “It’s the perfect cover. Vincent’s expecting me to show up, but he won’t be able to tell who’s who.”
Jax frowned. “And what about the rest of us?”
“You and Maya will handle the control room,” Blair said. “Kai, you’ll be on comms, guiding us through the operation. Our goal is to gather intel on Vincent’s network and, if possible, plant a tracker on him.”
The team exchanged uneasy glances, but no one voiced their doubts. They all knew what was at stake.
The next evening, Blair stood in front of a full-length mirror, adjusting her gown. The black dress was elegant yet understated, designed to blend in while still allowing for ease of movement. Beneath the fabric, she concealed a few gadgets: a compact stun gun, a lock-picking tool, and a tiny GPS tracker.
Lena, wearing the Blair mask and an identical gown, stepped into the room. “You owe me a spa day after this,” she joked, though her voice wavered with nerves.
Blair smiled. “Deal. Just remember, keep a low profile and don’t engage with Vincent unless absolutely necessary.”
As they arrived at the gala, Blair’s heart pounded in her chest. The ballroom was a sea of glittering chandeliers and elegantly dressed guests. But her eyes were drawn to the man standing at the center of it all: Vincent.
He was charming the crowd, his every move calculated. Blair’s blood boiled as she watched him, but she forced herself to remain calm.
“Stay focused,” Kai’s voice crackled in her earpiece. “You’ve got eyes on you already.”
Blair glanced around, spotting several men in suits who were clearly more than just guests. Vincent’s security was everywhere.
Blair mingled with the crowd, keeping her distance from Vincent while Lena, as her decoy, moved closer. Meanwhile, Jax and Maya slipped away toward the control room.
As Blair made small talk with a tech mogul, her earpiece buzzed.
“Blair, we’re in,” Jax whispered. “Disabling cameras now.”
The lights in the ballroom flickered briefly, and Blair took the opportunity to move closer to Vincent. She needed to get close enough to plant the tracker, but not so close that she drew attention.
As she approached, Vincent turned, his eyes locking onto her. For a moment, Blair froze. Did he know?
“Miss Whales,” Vincent said, his voice smooth. “I’m so glad you could make it.”
Blair forced a smile. “It’s not every day I get an invitation this exclusive.”
Vincent chuckled, but his eyes were cold. “I must admit, I’m curious. You seem... different tonight.”
Blair’s heart raced, but she kept her composure. “Perhaps the setting brings out a new side of me.”
Before Vincent could respond, Lena appeared beside him, her presence a calculated distraction. “Vincent,” she said, her voice mimicking Blair’s perfectly. “We need to talk.”
Vincent looked between them, his expression unreadable. “Of course. Shall we step outside?”
Blair slipped away as Lena led Vincent toward the balcony. She whispered into her earpiece, “Tracker’s in place. Get ready for extraction.”
As Blair made her way toward the exit, a hand grabbed her arm. She spun around, ready to defend herself, but stopped when she saw the familiar face of one of Vincent’s operatives.
“You’re not going anywhere,” the man growled.
Before Blair could react, a sharp pain shot through her neck. She reached up, feeling the sting of a tranquilizer dart. Her vision blurred, and she collapsed to the floor.
When Blair woke, she was in a dimly lit room, her wrists bound to a chair. Vincent sat across from her, a smug smile on his face.
“Did you really think you could outsmart me?” he asked, leaning forward.
Blair’s mind raced. She needed to stay calm, to think of a way out.
“I’m just here for the free drinks,” she said, her voice laced with defiance.
Vincent laughed, but there was no warmth in it. “You’ve been a thorn in my side for too long, Miss Whales. But now, the game is over.”
Blair’s heart pounded as Vincent stood, his shadow looming over her.
But before he could say another word, the door burst open. Jax and Maya stormed in, weapons drawn.
“Get away from her,” Jax growled.
Vincent smirked, backing away slowly. “This isn’t over.”
As Jax and Maya untied Blair, she felt a mix of relief and anger. She had underestimated Vincent, and it had almost cost her everything.
But this wasn’t the end. If anything, it was just the beginning.
