The night was quiet, the world outside Luna's window wrapped in stillness, but inside the house, there was an unease hanging in the air. Lucifer had noticed the way Luna seemed more withdrawn that evening, her usual spark missing. He had learned to recognize when something was off, even when she didn't speak about it. Tonight, however, she wasn't retreating into her usual silence. Instead, there was a vulnerability in her gaze, an openness he hadn't seen before.
As they sat together on the porch, the sounds of crickets and the rustle of leaves in the wind were the only things filling the space. The two of them had spent countless hours together in silence, but tonight, there was a weight in the air that couldn't be ignored.
Luna was fiddling with the hem of her sweater, her fingers restless as if she were trying to keep herself grounded. After a long pause, she spoke softly, almost as if the words had been building up inside her for years.
“You know,” she began, her voice trembling slightly, “I wasn’t always like this. I wasn’t always... broken.”
Lucifer turned toward her, his expression softening. He could see the walls she had built around herself beginning to crack. He didn't say anything at first, waiting for her to continue.
“I was an only child,” Luna continued, her voice steadying as she spoke of her past. “My parents... they loved me more than anything. My childhood was perfect—full of love and warmth. I remember being so happy, carefree, never imagining that anything could go wrong.”
Her eyes grew distant as she reminisced, her mind drifting to the memories of a time when life had felt simple, uncomplicated. “We moved to City Y after high school. I was excited—starting fresh, meeting new people. I never thought that would be the moment everything would change.”
Lucifer remained silent, feeling the weight of her words as they hung in the air. He wanted to reach out, to comfort her, but he knew that right now, she needed to speak more than anything.
“I was just starting my freshman year when it happened,” Luna continued, her voice cracking slightly as the memory resurfaced. “I got into an accident. It was... so sudden, I didn’t even have time to react. I remember nothing after that. I woke up in the hospital, and everything was different.”
Lucifer's heart tightened as he watched her struggle to keep her composure. He could hear the pain in her voice, and though he knew he couldn’t erase what had happened, he wanted to do everything in his power to help ease it.
“I was in a coma for a month,” Luna whispered. “When I woke up, I found out my legs... they wouldn’t move. The doctors said they tried everything, but I just couldn’t walk again. I felt so lost, so helpless. I tried treatments, therapies... but it wasn’t working. I gave up. I couldn't bear to keep trying. So I came here... to escape.”
Her voice broke as she finally allowed herself to feel the weight of it all. The pain she had been holding onto for so long was pouring out of her now, and Lucifer didn’t dare interrupt. He just sat there, listening, knowing that this was something she had to do on her own terms.
“I thought I could just disappear, that if I stayed far enough away, I could forget,” she said, her tears slipping down her cheeks. “But I miss them, Lucifer. I miss my family. I never thought I’d feel so alone. I want to see them again, but I’m too scared... scared of what they’ll think of me now.”
Lucifer felt his heart ache for her. He could see the girl she once was in the words she spoke—the girl who had been full of life, loved by her family, and full of dreams. He could see that the accident hadn't just taken her ability to walk—it had stolen her sense of self, her confidence, and the future she had imagined.
He reached out, placing a hand on her shoulder gently, offering her the comfort he knew she needed. “You’re not alone, Luna. You have people who care about you. I’m here for you. You don’t have to carry this all by yourself.”
Luna looked at him, her eyes filled with gratitude, but also with the weight of everything she had been through. She gave a shaky nod, as if she were finally allowing herself to feel the safety in his presence.
The night was still, the air heavy with emotion. For the first time in a long while, Luna felt a sense of release. The walls she had built around her heart had begun to crumble, and as she sat there with Lucifer, her heart, too, began to heal.
