Lucifer had always been the troublemaker of the family. The one who was too clumsy, too carefree, and too unpredictable for most people to understand. But this—this was different. He was supposed to be a bodyguard, a role that demanded discipline, focus, and a certain level of composure. None of those things came naturally to him. And as he sat in the corner of Luna's living room, he realized how hard this would be.
Luna was seated on the couch, her back straight and her eyes fixed on the window. The quiet room felt suffocating, and Lucifer couldn't help but fidget. His usual mischievous grin was nowhere to be found; he had to remind himself why he was here. He wasn't just a bodyguard. He was here to help Luna rediscover herself, to be the spark in her life again.
"Is something wrong with you?" Luna’s voice broke through his thoughts. She was still facing the window, but he could feel the sharpness of her gaze on him.
Lucifer blinked, realizing she was speaking to him. "What? Oh, nothing! Just thinking about... uh, the mission, I guess," he stammered, his usual charm slipping through the cracks.
Luna didn’t respond, but the tension between them hung in the air. Lucifer didn’t want to force her to talk, but he couldn’t stand the silence either. He had to break the ice somehow, make her comfortable around him.
"So, what do you like to do when you're not... sitting and staring out of windows?" he asked with a lopsided grin, hoping his humor would soften the mood.
Luna turned her head slightly, her expression unreadable. "I read," she said after a moment, her voice flat.
"Ah, a bookworm!" Lucifer laughed, trying to ease the awkwardness. "I guess I’ll need to find a book for us to read together. I promise, I’m not as bad at it as I look."
Luna raised an eyebrow at him but said nothing. It wasn’t much, but it was a start. Lucifer knew it was going to take more than a few jokes to break through her tough exterior. But he had time.
He spent the next few days trying to ease into Luna’s life. He wasn’t there to control her, after all—he was there to protect her. But Lucifer had always believed that protection started with friendship, and he was determined to win her over.
Each day, he would make small attempts to get her talking, and little by little, she started to respond. He’d tell jokes, try to get her to laugh, and sometimes he’d share stories of his wild childhood, which always made her roll her eyes but also made her smile just a little.
One evening, as he was leaving for the day, he turned to Luna, who was still in her usual spot, eyes focused on the book in her lap. "Hey, I’ll be back tomorrow. Don’t go making fun of me behind my back, okay?"
Luna glanced up at him, and for the first time, there was a hint of warmth in her eyes. "I’m not the one making fun of you," she replied dryly, but there was a small smile playing at the corners of her lips.
That small moment—Luna’s smile—made Lucifer’s heart skip a beat. It was a crack in the wall she’d built around herself, and Lucifer was determined to keep widening it.
