Lucifer froze, his breath catching in his throat as Luna’s wide, questioning eyes locked onto his. Her gaze held no trace of recognition, only wary curiosity.
“Are you the new bodyguard?” she asked softly, her voice carrying a blend of exhaustion and guarded politeness.
Bodyguard. The word echoed in his mind, jarring him back to reality. His mind raced, trying to process her question. Did she truly not recognize him? He could see her waiting for an answer, her fingers fidgeting nervously in her lap.
“Yes,” he said finally, forcing his voice to remain steady. “Your family sent me.”
Her expression softened slightly, and she nodded. “They’re always overprotective,” she murmured, almost to herself. “Well, come in.”
She turned her wheelchair and began to move inside. It was only then that Lucifer noticed it—her wheelchair. The sight hit him like a physical blow, the weight of it sinking deep into his chest.
This was why she disappeared. This was the truth he had been searching for, and now that it was in front of him, it felt unbearable. His vibrant, lively Luna—always running, laughing, dancing—was now confined to this chair.
He followed her inside, his heart heavy and his mind a whirlwind of emotions. The house was quiet, its silence amplifying the aching sadness in his chest. Luna moved with practiced ease, maneuvering around furniture as though the chair had become an extension of her.
“You can set your things here,” she said, gesturing toward a small table by the door. “It’s nothing fancy, but it’s home.”
Lucifer nodded silently, trying to hide the turmoil raging inside him. His eyes roamed the room, taking in the books stacked on every available surface, the soft, worn couch, and the faint scent of lavender lingering in the air. It was undeniably her space—simple, cozy, and comforting—but it also felt hollow, as though it had been starved of laughter and joy for too long.
“I’m Luna, by the way,” she said, turning to face him with a small smile. “I suppose I should know your name if we’re going to be working together.”
Lucifer hesitated for a moment, then offered a faint smile. “Luc,” he said, shortening his name instinctively. “Just Luc.”
“Nice to meet you, Luc,” she replied, her smile fading as she studied him for a moment. “You seem... familiar. Have we met before?”
His heart clenched, but he shook his head. “I don’t think so.”
The lie felt bitter on his tongue, but he couldn’t tell her the truth—not yet. Not when it might bring back the pain she had worked so hard to bury. For now, he would stay by her side, as her protector, her supporter. He would help her rebuild her life, one step at a time, and maybe, just maybe, they could find their way back to each other.
As he watched her wheel herself toward the kitchen, he made a silent vow: no matter how long it took, he would be the strength she needed. Because, in his heart, she was still his Luna.
