4. Competition

As the bell rang, signaling the end of the break, Ved smiled at Inika and offered, "If you want, I can help you. Just let me know when and where." But before they could continue their conversation, their teacher, Sonali Ma'am, walked into the classroom.

"Good morning, class," she greeted, as the students responded in unison. "Sadhu Ashwani High School has organized an interschool competition, featuring debate, elocution, creative writing, dance, and singing events. Our class can participate, so whoever is interested, please come forward and write your names on this sheet of paper."

Many students eagerly arose from their seats, wrote their names, and sat back down. Inika, however, was torn. She was battling with the decision of whether to participate or not. As she sat there, lost in thought, Sonali Ma'am spoke up again.

"So, nobody is participating in the debate? But I've seen you guys arguing well," she said jokingly. Inika suddenly stood up, determination in her eyes. "Ma'am, I want to participate in the debate," she declared.

Sonali Ma'am looked at her with a smile. "Inika, you need a partner to participate with." Inika scanned the classroom, her eyes searching for a potential partner. That's when Ved, who had been busy gazing at her, stood up with a smile.

"I can be your partner," he said, his eyes locked on Inika's. Sonali Ma'am smiled, seemingly pleased with the pairing. "Great! Inika and Ved will participate in the debate. Please meet me after school for topic discussion."

The competition was scheduled to take place in November, giving them two weeks to prepare. Ved was ecstatic, not just about participating in the debate, but also about spending more time with Inika. They started meeting each other after school, practicing their debate skills and discussing strategies.

For Ved, these meetings were a dream come true. He got to see Inika every day, and their interactions became more comfortable and enjoyable. He felt like this was the best decision he had ever made.

Finally, the day of the competition arrived. Ved, Inika, and Sonali Ma'am set off for the host school, chatting excitedly about their chances. As they traveled, Inika suddenly felt a cramping sensation in her abdomen. She knew that her periods had started, and she began to feel anxious.

Her face turned pale, and she grew quieter, looking out the window. Ved noticed the change in her demeanor and asked, "What happened?" Inika brushed it off, saying "Nothing," but Ved could sense that something was wrong.

As they reached the host school, Inika requested Sonali Ma'am to excuse her to the washroom. Ved stood outside, holding her bag, as she quickly disappeared into the restroom. He couldn't help but notice that her pink dress was getting stained with blood.

Ved's heart went out to Inika, and he felt a surge of concern. He waited patiently outside the washroom, wondering how he could help her. Little did he know that this day would be a test of their teamwork, trust, and friendship.
