It was late at night when Yunna and Mingi met in the living room. The silence between them seemed heavier than usual, and Yunna's gaze was fixed, as if she was trying to decipher something that was beyond her reach.
She felt that something was wrong, but she couldn't identify what. Mingi, on the other hand, was visibly distant, fiddling with his cell phone, as if the world around him didn't exist. Yunna took a deep breath before breaking the silence.
"Mingi, what's happening to us?" Her voice sounded softer than she would have liked, but it was the only way to start the conversation without exploding. Mingi looked at her, his eyes tired, and shrugged, a reaction that irritated Yunna even more.
"I don't know, Yunna. It's not that anything's going on... maybe it's just what was already obvious," he replied, his voice emotionless, as if the words were just a formality. Yunna stood up, crossed the room to him, and stopped in front of him. Her heart was beating fast, a mix of fear and anger.
“What do you mean ‘obvious’? What do you mean by that?” She couldn’t hide her frustration.
“We’ve spent so much time together, and now you’re telling me you don’t know what’s going on?”
Mingi let out a low laugh, but not with humor. It was a bitter laugh.
“Yunna, don’t you realize? I don’t care anymore. I don’t care about the relationship, I don’t care about the conversations we don’t have, I don’t care about what you think or feel.” He paused, letting the words fall like stones into a still lake.
“It’s all clear to me. It’s been a long time.”
Those words hit Yunna like a sharp blade. She froze for a moment, her eyes wide, trying to process what she had just heard.
“What?” She whispered, more to herself than to him. “You don’t care about me? About both of us? After everything we’ve been through together, you actually say that?”
Mingi stood up from his chair slowly, as if each movement was an effort. He looked at her with a tired expression, as if he was exhausted from trying to maintain something that no longer made sense to him.
“I’ve tried, Yunna. I’ve tried, but… it’s not possible anymore. I don’t have the strength to do this anymore. Furthermore, I’m not happy, and I don’t think you are either. You’re always trying to fix what can’t be fixed.”
He took a step back, as if he needed distance, as if the simple fact of being near her was painful.
“The truth is, I just don’t care anymore. Maybe you deserve someone who still believes in this idea of a “perfect relationship,” but I’m not that person.”
Mingi’s words echoed in the air, and Yunna felt the weight of them crushing her chest. She wanted to scream, wanted to ask a thousand things, but the lump in her throat prevented her from speaking.
Instead, she looked at him, with tears in her eyes, and asked in a trembling voice, “So, what do you want?” What do you expect from me?
Mingi was silent for a moment, as if he was pondering his answer. Finally, he spoke, harshly.
“Nothing. I just want us to stop pretending that everything is okay. It’s not. And there’s no point in trying to save what’s already broken.”
Yunna closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the tears welling up, but not allowing herself to let them fall. She already knew what she needed to do, but still, Mingi’s words were like a cruel echo in her mind.
“So, is that it? Is it over?”
Mingi just nodded. There was no emotion on his face anymore, nothing that indicated regret. He looked cold, distant, and Yunna knew he had already made his choice. He had already walked away, and she was just trying to catch up to him in a race that was already lost.
Without another word, he turned and walked to the door, opening it and walking out into the dark night without looking back. Yunna stood there, in the middle of the room, alone, as tears finally fell silently down her face.
Yunna stood in the living room, the echoes of Mingi’s words still echoing in her mind. She knew that somehow the relationship had come to an end, but a part of her still clung to the hope that he would come back.
Maybe that was why, after the door closed behind him, emptiness took over. She looked at the phone in her hand, the screen glowing softly in the darkness of the night.
That was when Marcos’ name appeared on the screen. He had asked her out weeks ago, but Yunna had declined, always trying to keep things in place, always trying to protect what was left of her relationship with Mingi. Now, with everything falling apart, a feeling of emptiness washed over her, and she looked at Marcos’ message once more.
“Hey, Yunna! I know you must be busy, but how about we go out tomorrow night? Just to talk and have a good laugh.”
The idea of a simple date, with no promises, no pressure, seemed tempting. The sadness in her chest wouldn't go away, and she wondered if maybe a distraction would help, even if it was just for a few hours.
Maybe Marcos was a way to escape, to forget the pain that was consuming her. She thought for a moment. The emptiness she felt seemed oppressive, and the fact that Mingi didn't feel the same anymore made her even more lost.
Maybe, with Marcos, she could feel something different, even if it was just for a moment. Yunna took a deep breath and started typing, without thinking much about the consequences.
"Hi, Marcos. Sorry for the delay, I was sorting out some things. I accept! Let's go out tomorrow night. It'll be good to talk." She pressed "send", and for a second, she felt a slight sense of relief.
She didn't know if she was making the right decision, but at that moment, what she wanted most was to distract herself from the pain. The next day arrived quickly, and Yunna got ready for the meeting with a mix of anxiety and uncertainty.
She felt uncomfortable with the idea of going out with someone other than Mingi, but she also knew she had to move on. The night seemed promising, maybe it was exactly what she needed to feel like life went on, even without him.
