Hana sat in her apartment, staring blankly at the journal spread open before her. The pen in her hand hovered just above the page, trembling as if it carried the weight of everything she needed to write but couldn’t.
The night at the café had left her raw. She’d poured so much of herself into convincing Yuki to stay, to trust her, but now that she was alone, the cracks in her own foundation began to show.
She closed the journal, unable to summon the words. Instead, she leaned back in her chair, letting her gaze drift to the ceiling. The past few days had been a storm—Emi’s kiss, Yuki’s wounded eyes, the quiet despair of almost losing the person she cared about most.
Why does it always feel like the past never really leaves?
The thought lingered as her phone buzzed on the table. She flinched, half-expecting it to be Emi again. Her name still felt like a shadow looming over everything. But the screen lit up with Yuki’s name instead.
Yuki: Thank you for yesterday. It helped. I’m still scared, but I want to try.
Hana let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. A small smile tugged at her lips as she typed a reply.
Hana: Me too. One step at a time.
The message was simple, but it carried the weight of her determination. Yuki wasn’t the only one who had fears to face.
Later that day, Hana found herself at her childhood home. She hadn’t visited in months, but something about the past week had drawn her back. The house was quiet, her parents were away for the weekend, but the familiar smell of old wood and lavender greeted her as she stepped inside.
She wandered through the living room, her fingers brushing against the framed photos on the mantle. There was one of her and Emi from high school, their arms slung around each other, grinning like they had the whole world ahead of them.
Hana stared at the photo for a long moment before picking it up. The edges of the frame dug into her palm, grounding her in the present.
The sound of footsteps startled her. She turned to see her younger brother, Kaito, leaning against the doorway.
“Didn’t expect to see you here,” he said, his tone casual but curious.
“Yeah,” Hana replied, setting the photo back down. “I needed some space to think.”
Kaito raised an eyebrow, but he didn’t press. Instead, he walked over and plopped onto the couch, patting the spot beside him.
“What’s eating at you?” he asked once she sat down.
Hana hesitated. She didn’t talk about her feelings much—not even with Kaito—but the weight of everything was too much to keep bottled up.
“Do you remember Emi?” she finally said.
Kaito snorted. “The girl who broke your heart? It's hard to forget.”
Hana winced at his bluntness but nodded. “She’s back. And she kissed me.”
Kaito’s expression darkened. “You’re kidding.”
“I wish I were,” Hana said, letting out a bitter laugh. “Yuki saw it. I tried to explain, but… I don’t know. It’s a mess.”
Kaito leaned back, his arms crossed. “Do you still have feelings for Emi?”
The question hit Hana like a punch to the gut. She wanted to say no, to deny it outright, but she couldn’t lie—not to Kaito, and not to herself.
“I don’t think so,” she said after a long pause. “But seeing her again brought up so much… anger, confusion, maybe even some of the good memories. It’s like she has this hold on me, even now.”
Kaito nodded slowly. “And Yuki?”
Hana’s chest tightened. “I care about her. A lot. But she doesn’t trust easily, and I almost broke that. I don’t know how to fix it.”
Kaito was quiet for a moment, then he said, “Maybe it’s not about fixing. Maybe it’s about showing her that she can trust you, little by little.”
His words stuck with Hana long after she left.
Back at her apartment, Hana sat down with her journal again. This time, the words came easier.
Yuki, she wrote, "I don’t know if you’ll ever see this, but I want to try to put my feelings into words." You mean more to me than I think you realize. I know I’ve made mistakes, and I know trusting me isn’t easy for you. But I want to be the person you can rely on, the person you can feel safe with. I’ll take it one step at a time, for as long as it takes.
She set the pen down, her hand shaking slightly. Writing the words felt like a release, like she was finally acknowledging the depth of her feelings.
Her phone buzzed again, and this time, it was Yuki asking if she wanted to meet for coffee tomorrow.
Hana’s heart swelled with cautious hope as she typed her reply.
Hana: I’d love to.
The next day, as she walked to the café, Hana felt a strange mix of nerves and determination. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew one thing for certain: she wouldn’t let the past define her anymore.
Yuki was waiting for her by the window, her sketchpad open in front of her. Hana’s breath caught at the sight. Yuki looked up as she approached, her expression tentative but warm.
“Hi,” Hana said softly as she sat down.
“Hi,” Yuki replied, a small smile breaking through her usual reserve.
And just like that, Hana knew they were starting again. Not perfectly, not without difficulty, but together.
