Lisa sat cross-legged on the cold floor of her cell, the battered notebook from Kane still clutched in her hands. Her mind spun with the fragments of information it contained—names, dates, surveillance logs—but one question haunted her above all else: Who is Kane?
She wasn’t sure why it mattered, but something about the man unsettled her. He wasn’t like the other agents of Aegis—faceless, brutal, and robotic in their loyalty. Kane was deliberate, controlled, and deeply enigmatic. His words had weight, his gaze carried secrets, and, maddeningly, she couldn’t figure out his angle.
The sound of the lock clicking broke her thoughts. Lisa looked up sharply as Kane entered, his silhouette framed by the harsh light of the hallway.
“I see you’ve been reading,” he said, his voice calm as ever.
Lisa stood, holding up the notebook. “If you’re trying to manipulate me, it’s not going to work.”
Kane’s lips twitched into the faintest of smiles. “Is that what you think I’m doing?”
“I don’t know what you’re doing,” Lisa shot back. “One minute you’re feeding me lies about Taehyung, the next you’re acting like you care. What’s your game, Kane?”
He stepped further into the room, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. “There’s no game, Lisa. Only the truth. Whether you choose to believe it is up to you.”
“Then start with the truth about you,” she demanded, her voice steady. “Who are you, really? And why are you so invested in this?”
Kane studied her for a long moment, his dark eyes unreadable. Then, to her surprise, he nodded.
“Very well,” he said. “But I warn you—some truths are better left buried.”

Kane led her out of the cell, through a series of dimly lit corridors that seemed to twist endlessly. Lisa couldn’t tell if this was part of the same facility or a different wing entirely. When they reached a small, private room, he motioned for her to sit.
The space was sparse, with only a table and two chairs. A single dim bulb hung overhead, casting flickering shadows on the walls. Kane took the seat across from her, his posture relaxed yet somehow guarded.
“I wasn’t always part of Aegis,” he began, his voice low and measured. “In fact, I spent most of my life running from them.”
Lisa frowned, caught off guard. “Running? Why?”
“Because I was their experiment,” Kane said bluntly, his eyes locking onto hers. “Just like you.”
Her breath hitched, but she quickly masked her reaction. “What are you talking about?”
Kane leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. “Years ago, Aegis wasn’t the monolithic organization it is now. It started as a research initiative—a secret project funded by governments and private entities to push the boundaries of human potential. Enhanced intelligence, reflexes, strength... you name it. But as with all things, ambition corrupted it.”
He paused, his gaze distant, as if replaying memories he’d rather forget. “I was one of their first subjects. Taken as a child, stripped of my identity, and rebuilt in their image. They trained me, conditioned me, turned me into a weapon. And when I finally escaped, I thought I was free.”
Lisa felt a chill run down her spine. “But you came back.”
Kane’s lips curved into a bitter smile. “Not by choice. Aegis doesn’t let its creations go. They found me, hunted me, and gave me a choice: die fighting them, or work for them.”
“And you chose to work for them,” Lisa said, her voice laced with anger.
“I chose to survive,” Kane corrected, his tone sharp. “And in doing so, I gained access to the one thing I needed—information. The truth about what they’re really after. About people like us.”
Lisa’s pulse quickened. “People like us?”
Kane nodded. “You’re not just some random girl they plucked out of obscurity, Lisa. You were chosen, just like I was. Your connection to Taehyung is no accident. He’s been part of this world far longer than you realize, and you’re a critical piece of the puzzle he’s trying to solve.”
“Why should I believe you?” Lisa asked, her voice trembling despite her resolve.
Kane leaned back, his gaze piercing. “Because if I wanted to manipulate you, I’d have told you exactly what you wanted to hear. Instead, I’m telling you the truth—ugly and uncomfortable as it may be.”
Silence hung between them, heavy and suffocating.
Finally, Lisa spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. “Why are you telling me this?”
Kane’s expression softened, and for the first time, Lisa thought she saw a flicker of vulnerability in his eyes.
“Because I see myself in you,” he said quietly. “And because I know what it’s like to trust someone, only to realize they’ve been lying to you all along.”
The words hit her like a punch to the gut. Memories of Taehyung flashed through her mind—his protectiveness, his intensity, the way he’d promised to find her no matter what. Could it all have been a facade?
Lisa shook her head, trying to push the doubts away. “You don’t know anything about me and Taehyung.”
“I know more than you think,” Kane said, his voice soft but unrelenting. “And I know that when the time comes, you’ll have to decide whether to trust him—or me.”
Lisa stared at him, her chest tightening with a mix of fear and anger. She didn’t trust Kane, but she couldn’t ignore the nagging feeling that he was telling the truth.
“Why me?” she asked finally. “Why do I matter so much to Aegis?”
Kane’s gaze darkened. “Because you’re the key to everything.”
