The days following their café meet-up felt like a slow unraveling. Minhyuk couldn’t shake the unease that had started to settle in his chest, a tension that had been quietly building with every interaction, every shared laugh, every moment spent in Seoyeon and Yujin’s orbit.
It wasn’t that he regretted the moments they’d spent together. Far from it. He had begun to feel a strange comfort in their presence, a sense of belonging that he hadn’t known he needed. But at the same time, the distance he had always kept between himself and others seemed to be eroding, piece by piece. And that scared him.
At school the next day, Minhyuk found himself sitting next to Seoyeon during lunch, though he couldn’t quite explain why. They had fallen into a pattern of sharing small conversations, lingering for a moment before the bell rang. He couldn’t help but notice the way her eyes sparkled when she spoke, the way her voice shifted when she was excited. It was hard not to pay attention, but it also felt like a dangerous game, one that he wasn’t sure he was ready to play.
“So, are you drawing anything new lately?” Seoyeon asked, breaking the silence between them as they sat at their usual spot in the corner of the cafeteria.
Minhyuk glanced up from his lunch, blinking in surprise. It wasn’t that Seoyeon didn’t ask about his art—it was just that today, her question seemed different. More personal, more direct.
“Uh, yeah,” Minhyuk replied, his voice hesitant. “I’ve been working on a portrait... but it’s not quite right yet.”
Seoyeon leaned in slightly, her eyes soft. “Do you mind if I see it sometime? I’d like to see what you’re working on.”
Minhyuk froze, unsure of how to respond. The thought of sharing his work with someone else, especially Seoyeon, felt like an invasion of something he kept hidden. His drawings weren’t just pictures; they were pieces of his thoughts, of his quiet moments, and showing them to someone else always made him feel exposed.
“I’m not sure... it’s still unfinished,” Minhyuk muttered, feeling the familiar anxiety creep up on him.
Seoyeon smiled gently, a playful glint in her eyes. “That’s okay. You don’t have to show me if you don’t want to. I’m just curious.”
Her words, though lighthearted, made Minhyuk feel both relieved and embarrassed. He knew she wasn’t pushing him, but something about her openness made him feel like he was the one holding back. Why was it so difficult to share something that seemed so small to her? Maybe he was afraid of what revealing his art might mean—or what it might say about him.
Before he could respond, Yujin appeared, sliding into the seat across from them with a dramatic sigh.
“You two are getting way too deep into these conversations,” Yujin teased, glancing between them. “It’s like you’re preparing for a therapy session or something.”
Seoyeon rolled her eyes, but Minhyuk couldn’t help but feel a little thankful for Yujin’s interruption. Her presence had a way of lightening the mood, easing the tension that had been building up.
“You know, Yujin, not everything is a joke,” Seoyeon said with a laugh, nudging her playfully.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m just here for the entertainment,” Yujin replied with a grin, glancing at Minhyuk. “You two could use some more fun, though. How about we all go out this weekend? You need a little break from all this school stuff.”
Minhyuk hesitated, looking from Yujin to Seoyeon. He hadn’t spent much time outside of school with either of them, and the thought of it made him anxious. He was comfortable in their presence at school, but outside, things felt different.
“I don’t know,” Minhyuk said quietly, unsure of how to voice his hesitation. “I’m not sure if I’m the best company for that.”
Seoyeon smiled warmly, though there was a hint of understanding in her gaze. “You don’t have to be. It’s just a chance to get out of the house and have some fun. You deserve it.”
Yujin nodded enthusiastically. “Exactly. Just some simple fun. No pressure.”
Minhyuk glanced down at his tray, unsure. Part of him wanted to say yes, to step outside of his comfort zone, but the other part of him was terrified of what that might mean. It was easier to stay in his small bubble, to retreat into the safety of his own space.
But then, as he glanced back up at Seoyeon’s hopeful face, he felt something shift inside him. Maybe it was the thought that they were offering him something he hadn’t had in a long time—an invitation into a world that wasn’t defined by loneliness. Maybe it was the fact that, despite everything, he was starting to enjoy their company more than he cared to admit.
“I’ll come,” Minhyuk finally said, the words slipping out before he could second-guess himself.
Seoyeon’s face lit up with a smile, and Yujin gave a satisfied nod.
“Great! It’ll be fun,” Yujin said, her voice full of excitement.
As they continued to talk about the weekend plans, Minhyuk felt a strange sense of warmth spread through him. Despite his nervousness, despite the unspoken tension he could feel growing between him and Seoyeon, he realized that maybe, just maybe, it was time to step outside the walls he had so carefully built around himself.
And perhaps, in doing so, he would learn something more about himself—and about the connections he was slowly, but surely, beginning to form.
