Part 14: Trials of the Ancients
The forest seemed to grow denser as the pack moved further from the temple. Each step felt heavier, the air thicker with a tension none of them could shake. The shadow’s warning hung over them like an ominous cloud, its cryptic words weaving into their thoughts. The mention of a place where the bond of the pack was forged weighed on Kael most of all. It wasn’t just a destination—it felt like a calling.
But finding it wasn’t going to be simple.

Whispers of the Old Wolves
Three nights after leaving the temple, they came across an elder wolf. The encounter was pure chance—or perhaps fate. The scent had reached Kael first, faint but distinct. It was the scent of another werewolf, but it carried something ancient and earthy, like moss-covered stone and centuries of decay.
The elder lived in a grove surrounded by towering oaks whose roots twisted and tangled, forming a natural barrier. At first, Kael and the pack approached cautiously, unsure of what they might find. But the elder had sensed them before they had even stepped into the grove.
“Come forward,” a raspy voice called out.
Kael pushed through the last of the foliage and saw him—a hunched figure with a grizzled beard and eyes that seemed to glow faintly in the twilight. His form flickered between man and wolf, his control so effortless that it was as if both forms existed at once.
“You’re brave to wander so far,” the elder said, his voice carrying a weight that made the pack fall silent. “Or foolish.”
“We’re looking for answers,” Kael said, stepping forward. “There’s a place—something ancient, connected to our kind. Do you know of it?”
The elder tilted his head, his glowing eyes narrowing. “You speak of the Hollow.”
“The Hollow?” Lyria asked, her voice betraying a mix of curiosity and caution.
The elder nodded. “It’s where the first packs were born, where the bond between wolf and man was forged. But it is not a place you find. It is a place that calls to you, if you are worthy.”
Kael frowned. “How do we prove we’re worthy?”
The elder chuckled, a deep, guttural sound that sent shivers down their spines. “You face the Trials. They test not your strength, but your spirit. Your bond. Your will to stand as one.”
Finn shifted uneasily. “And if we fail?”
The elder’s expression darkened. “Then you will never leave the Hollow.”
The weight of his words hung in the air, but Kael’s resolve didn’t waver. “Where do we start?”
The elder studied him for a long moment, then motioned toward the grove’s center. There, a stone pedestal stood, its surface carved with symbols that glowed faintly in the dim light.
“Place your hands upon it,” the elder instructed. “If the Hollow accepts you, the path will reveal itself.”
Kael stepped forward, his heart pounding. He placed his hands on the stone, and a sudden jolt of energy surged through him. Images flashed in his mind—howling wolves, a burning forest, a dark figure looming over a circle of stones. And then, just as suddenly, it stopped.
When Kael opened his eyes, the forest around them had changed. The grove was gone, replaced by a misty expanse of towering trees and ancient ruins.

The First Trial: Trust
The pack found themselves standing in a circular clearing, the ruins of stone pillars surrounding them like silent sentinels. The mist clung to the ground, muffling every sound except their breathing.
“What now?” Sorin asked, her voice low.
Before anyone could answer, the mist shifted, swirling and coalescing into a figure—a wolf, its fur as black as night, its eyes burning like coals.
“To enter the Hollow, you must prove yourselves,” the wolf said, its voice echoing in their minds. “The first trial is trust. Without it, a pack is nothing.”
As the words faded, the ground beneath them trembled, and the clearing began to shift. Walls of stone rose from the earth, forming a labyrinth that stretched as far as the eye could see.
“We’re supposed to get through this together,” Lyria said, her sharp eyes scanning the maze.
Kael nodded. “Stay close. No one gets separated.”
But as soon as they stepped into the labyrinth, the walls shifted again, and the pack was split into pairs—Kael with Lyria, Sorin with Finn.
A voice echoed through the maze: “Find each other. Prove your bond.”
Kael’s instincts kicked in as he led Lyria through the twisting corridors. The air was thick with the scent of magic, and every turn felt like a step deeper into the unknown.
“Do you think the others are okay?” Lyria asked, her voice steady but laced with concern.
“They’ll be fine,” Kael said, though he wasn’t entirely sure. “We just need to focus on finding them.”
---
Meanwhile, Finn and Sorin faced their own challenges. The labyrinth wasn’t just a maze—it was alive. Shadows slithered along the walls, whispers filled the air, and illusions tried to pull them apart.
At one point, Finn saw a figure in the distance—his sister, who he had lost to hunters years ago. She called out to him, her voice soft and pleading.
“Finn, help me!”
But Sorin grabbed his arm, her green eyes fierce. “It’s not real. Focus. You can’t let it trick you.”
Finn hesitated, the pain of his loss threatening to overwhelm him. But he took a deep breath and nodded, letting Sorin pull him away.
---
Kael and Lyria eventually found themselves at a dead end. But as they turned to backtrack, a massive wolf emerged from the shadows, its eyes glowing with a menacing light.
“Prove your trust,” the wolf growled, baring its teeth.
Kael stepped forward, his body tensed. “We’re not here to fight you.”
The wolf lunged, and Kael pushed Lyria aside, taking the brunt of the attack. The beast’s claws raked across his chest, but Kael didn’t strike back.
“Stop!” Lyria shouted, stepping between Kael and the wolf. “He trusts me to protect him, just as I trust him to lead us. That’s what it means to be a pack!”
The wolf paused, its glowing eyes meeting Lyria’s. Slowly, it stepped back, and the labyrinth began to dissolve.
---
When the walls faded entirely, the pack was reunited in the clearing. Kael’s wounds had healed, and the black wolf from before reappeared.
“You have passed the first trial,” it said. “Your bond is strong, but the path ahead will test it further. Prepare yourselves, for the next trial will reveal the truth of your hearts.”
The mist thickened again, and the pack was swept into the next phase of their journey.
