The Lost Prince

The group trekked deeper into the Forgotten Realm, the melody pulling Maya forward like an invisible tether. The air grew colder, and the landscape shifted unnaturally, as if the land itself was alive, bending to the will of unseen forces.

Ash had grown quieter since Maya’s vision of ruin, his usual sharp remarks replaced with thoughtful glances at the horizon. Arin, ever observant, finally broke the silence.

“Something’s bothering you,” she said, walking alongside him.

Ash shrugged, his tone deflective. “Nothing that matters right now.”

But Maya, walking ahead, could feel the tension radiating from him. She slowed her pace until she was beside him. “Ash, if something’s wrong, you should tell us. We’re in this together.”

For a moment, Ash didn’t reply. Then he sighed heavily, his shoulders sagging. “It’s not that simple, Maya.”

Before she could press him further, the melody in her mind shifted, its notes becoming urgent and chaotic. The group froze as the ground beneath their feet began to tremble.

“What now?” Arin muttered, drawing her dagger.

A blinding light erupted in front of them, forcing them to shield their eyes. When the light faded, they found themselves standing in the middle of an elaborate hall, its walls adorned with golden filigree and intricate carvings. At its center stood a towering statue of a man clad in regal armor, his hand outstretched as if reaching for something beyond the stars.

Maya stepped forward, her gaze drawn to an inscription at the statue’s base. The language was unfamiliar, but as she stared, the words seemed to shift, rearranging themselves into something she could read.

“‘To the true heir of the Forgotten Realm,’” she read aloud. “‘May your legacy restore what was lost.’”

Ash stiffened behind her.

Arin tilted her head, studying Ash. “You’re acting strange. What’s going on?”

Ash opened his mouth to reply, but before he could speak, the melody surged, and the statue began to glow. The light coalesced into a figure—translucent but undeniably regal. The apparition looked directly at Ash.

“You have returned,” it said, its voice echoing with both sorrow and hope. “My son.”

The words hung in the air like a thunderclap.

Maya turned to Ash, her eyes wide. “What is he talking about?”

Ash’s jaw tightened, his hands clenching into fists. “It’s… complicated.”

“Complicated?” Arin said, her tone incredulous. “You’re a prince? Of this realm?”

The apparition stepped closer, its form flickering. “He is not just a prince. He is the last heir to the throne—the one who was meant to unite the realms and restore balance.”

Ash shook his head, his voice filled with anger. “I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t want any of it.”

“You cannot run from your destiny,” the apparition said. “The melody called to you for a reason. You are as bound to it as she is.”

Maya felt the weight of the apparition’s words. “You knew about this?” she asked, her voice soft but firm.

Ash looked at her, his expression conflicted. “I knew… pieces. My family always told stories about this realm, about a curse tied to our bloodline. But I didn’t know the full truth until I heard the melody. That’s why I came to Solenwood—to find answers.”

“And you didn’t think to share this with us?” Arin snapped.

“I didn’t think it mattered,” Ash shot back. “What difference does it make? I’m not some savior. I’m just… me.”

The apparition’s gaze softened. “You have always underestimated your own strength. But denying your heritage will not change the truth. The melody chose you for a reason.”

Ash turned away, his expression unreadable.

Maya stepped forward, placing a hand on his arm. “Ash, we need you. The realm needs you. Whatever this is, we’ll face it together.”

For a moment, Ash didn’t respond. Then he nodded, though the tension in his body remained.

The apparition began to fade, its light dimming. “The path ahead will test you all. Trust in each other, and you may yet succeed. But remember, the melody is as much a curse as it is a gift. Use it wisely.”

As the apparition vanished, the hall began to dissolve, leaving them once again in the barren landscape of the Forgotten Realm.

Arin exhaled sharply. “Well, that was unexpected.”

Maya looked at Ash, her resolve strengthening. “We’ll figure this out. Together.”

Ash met her gaze, his usual bravado replaced with vulnerability. “I hope you’re right.”

The melody in Maya’s mind shifted once more, its notes steadier and more purposeful. She didn’t know what lay ahead, but one thing was clear: their journey had just become far more complicated.
