The ruins grew eerily silent, the melody fading into a tense, expectant hum. Maya and Ash exchanged uneasy glances as the twilight deepened, the forest around them taking on a more menacing tone.
“It’s too quiet,” Ash muttered, his voice low. “I don’t like it.”
Maya nodded, her senses on high alert. She couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched, though nothing stirred in the shadows that stretched across the ruins.
Then it happened.
A low, guttural growl echoed through the clearing, followed by the crunch of something heavy moving through the underbrush. Maya froze, her heart pounding as a dark shape emerged from the trees.
The creature was unlike anything she had ever seen. It stood on four spindly legs, its body covered in shifting shadows that seemed to devour the surrounding light. Its eyes glowed a sickly green, and when it opened its jagged maw, the melody twisted into a discordant wail.
“What is that?” Maya whispered, backing away.
Ash stepped in front of her, his stance protective. “A shadow beast. The journals mentioned them—creatures tied to the portal, made of pure darkness.”
The shadow beast snarled and lunged toward them with terrifying speed. Ash pushed Maya behind him and swung a heavy branch he had picked up earlier, but the beast dissolved into smoke, reforming a few feet away.
“Physical attacks won’t work!” Ash yelled. “We need to figure out another way!”
The melody surged in Maya’s mind, a chaotic symphony of fear and urgency. Her instincts screamed at her to run, but something deeper told her to stand her ground.
The shadow beast lunged again, this time directly at Maya. She raised her hands instinctively, bracing for impact—
—but instead of claws tearing into her, a burst of light exploded from her palms, slamming into the creature and sending it skidding across the clearing.
Maya stared at her hands in shock, her palms glowing faintly with a golden light. “What... just happened?”
Ash’s jaw dropped. “You—did you know you could do that?”
Maya shook her head, her heart racing. “No! It just... happened!”
The shadow beast recovered quickly, its form flickering with agitation. It snarled and charged again, more ferocious this time. Maya felt the melody surge within her, guiding her movements. She thrust her hands forward, and another beam of light shot out, this time forming a shimmering barrier between her and the beast.
The creature slammed into the barrier and recoiled with a howl, its shadowy form starting to unravel.
“Maya, whatever you’re doing, keep doing it!” Ash called, circling the creature with a determined look.
Maya focused on the melody, letting it flow through her. She could feel its power coursing through her veins, a strange but exhilarating sensation. She raised her hands again, and this time, the light shaped itself into a spear of energy.
With a deep breath, she hurled the spear at the shadow beast. It struck the creature directly, and with a final, ear-splitting wail, the beast dissolved into wisps of smoke, leaving the clearing silent once more.
Maya collapsed to her knees, the glow fading from her hands. Her breath came in ragged gasps, and her entire body felt drained.
Ash rushed to her side, helping her sit up. “Are you okay?”
“I think so,” she said, her voice trembling. “What just happened? How did I do that?”
Ash looked at her with a mixture of awe and confusion. “I don’t know, but it’s like the melody woke something up in you. Magic, maybe?”
Maya’s mind raced, trying to process what had just occurred. “Do you think it’s because of the melody? Or is it... me?”
“Maybe both,” Ash said. “But whatever it is, it saved our lives.”
Maya glanced at her hands, still tingling with residual energy. The memory of the light, of the melody guiding her, was vivid in her mind. “If this is what the melody wanted me to discover... what else does it have planned?”
As the adrenaline wore off, Maya and Ash sat together near the altar, the ruins once again quiet. Ash poked at the ground with a stick, deep in thought.
“I think the shadow beast was a test,” he said finally.
“A test?” Maya asked, raising an eyebrow.
Ash nodded. “The journals talked about trials. They’re supposed to prove you’re strong enough to handle the portal’s power. That thing... it wasn’t just attacking us randomly. It was testing you.”
Maya shivered, the weight of his words settling over her. “So there could be more of them?”
“Probably,” Ash said grimly. “And they’ll only get harder.”
Maya clenched her fists, determination replacing her fear. “Then I’ll just have to get stronger.”
Ash gave her a small, encouraging smile. “You already are. What you did back there... that was incredible.”
Maya returned his smile, though doubt still gnawed at the edges of her resolve. The shadow beast had been terrifying, but it was only the beginning. Whatever lay ahead, she knew it would test her in ways she couldn’t yet imagine.
The melody stirred within her again, softer this time, as if acknowledging her victory.
She closed her eyes, letting its notes fill her mind. “If the melody wants me to face these trials,” she said softly, “then I’ll face them. But I won’t let it control me. I’m not just some pawn in its game.”
Ash reached out and squeezed her hand. “You’re not alone in this, Maya. Whatever happens, we’ll face it together.”
Maya looked at him, gratitude and determination shining in her eyes. “Together.”
The melody hummed in approval, its haunting tune carrying them into the unknown.
