Chapter 10

Chapter 10: The Illusion Crumbles

Erin stood in the middle of her apartment, staring at the flickering light above her, her heart pounding against her ribcage. The warmth from the evening seemed to dissipate the moment she crossed the threshold, leaving behind a biting chill that cut through her. The quiet, which had once been a comfort, now felt suffocating, closing in on her from all sides.

She had been so sure. She had felt free, like she had built something real, something that belonged to her. The pottery, the reconnections, the peaceful moments with friends and family—everything had felt like it was falling into place. She had truly believed that she was on the path to recovery, that she had left the old Erin, the one tethered to Lucas, behind.

She had convinced herself that she was strong enough to live her life independently. But now, as the silence enveloped her, the once-comforting walls of her apartment felt like a cage.

Something had shifted. The world outside seemed so vivid just hours ago—the sunlight, the laughter, the conversations—but here, in her apartment, everything felt wrong. The air felt thick, like it was pressing in from all sides. Her heart began to race, and the calm she had felt only moments before vanished like smoke. Erin’s mind began to spin.

Where is he?

The question gripped her, a whisper in the back of her mind, creeping into every thought, every moment. She hadn’t thought about Lucas in days, but now his absence was glaring. His presence had been so constant in her life for years—every argument, every tear, every attempt to fix something broken. And now, as she stood alone in her apartment, it felt as though something was missing, something fundamental.

Was it all a lie?

Her breath quickened as the familiar, unwelcome sensation of panic set in. Her stomach twisted in knots, and the once-beautiful things she had created felt empty, hollow. The pottery that had once grounded her now seemed pointless. The cozy apartment, the reconnected friendships, the fleeting moments of joy—all of it felt like a fragile illusion. The weight of her past, the years of manipulation, control, and the constant second-guessing, hadn’t vanished as she had hoped. They had simply been buried beneath a fragile veneer of progress.

Erin stumbled toward the phone on her counter, her fingers shaking as she unlocked it. Her screen lit up with missed calls, texts from Claire, her mother. It all seemed distant, irrelevant now. Her finger hovered over Lucas’s number, trembling.

Why does it still feel like I need him?

Her thumb hesitated over the contact, but then she pressed call, her heart hammering in her chest as the phone rang in her ear. It felt like an eternity before the voicemail picked up, its cold, mechanical voice sending a shiver down her spine.

“Hey, it’s Erin. I—” She stopped mid-sentence, her throat tightening. The message she had left him only days ago now felt empty, as if it had never mattered. She had hoped that somehow he would reach out, that his presence would fill the empty spaces in her life. But it hadn’t happened. And now, standing in the quiet, it was clear to her: he was never coming back. He never would.

She dropped the phone onto the counter, the cold screen reflecting her face. Her own eyes stared back at her, wide, uncertain, filled with confusion. She didn’t recognize the person staring back at her. Who was she? The woman who stood before her was so foreign, so different from the Erin who had relied on Lucas, the Erin who had allowed herself to be consumed by his demands, his manipulation. But was she really different? Or was this just a temporary escape? A brief flicker of hope before the inevitable fall?

The apartment felt colder now, more oppressive. She moved toward the window, opening it slightly, letting the cool evening air wash over her. The world outside was as it had always been—alive, moving, full of promise.

And yet, Erin felt like an outsider, disconnected from it all. She wasn’t a part of it. Not really.

I built this. I made this life, she told herself, clinging to the belief that she had control over her future.

But deep down, in the recesses of her mind, something gnawed at her.

But for what?

She had rebuilt herself, had separated from Lucas, from the toxic hold he once had on her. But in doing so, she had also severed a piece of herself, a piece she didn’t know how to get back. She had spent so much time trying to survive, trying to get by, that she never took the time to figure out who she really was without him. She had crafted a new life for herself, yes, but had she truly changed?

Her eyes darted to the pottery on the shelves—bowls, vases, mugs. Each one a symbol of her new life. But they now felt more like reminders of her desperation. They were things she created to fill a void, to keep herself busy, to distract her from the growing fear that perhaps she was still trapped in the same cage she had been in for years. The walls that had once felt freeing, like a safe space to rebuild, now felt like they were closing in, suffocating her. She had built a life, but it was fragile. And the cracks were starting to show.

The phone buzzed again, and Erin’s gaze flickered to the screen. Another text. Another call. But she didn’t want to respond. She didn’t want to reach out to anyone, to let anyone in. She had told herself that she could handle this on her own, that she didn’t need anyone to complete her. But the truth, the ugly, undeniable truth, was that she was still alone.

She was still alone.

Erin sank down onto the couch, her hands trembling as she pulled her knees to her chest. The world around her felt too loud, too overwhelming. The silence was deafening. Her breath came in shallow gasps, and her vision began to blur at the edges. The calm she had felt earlier seemed like a distant memory. The weight of everything—everything she had worked so hard to escape—came crashing down on her.

Her phone buzzed again, but this time, she didn’t even look at it. She didn’t care anymore. Nothing mattered. She had worked so hard to convince herself that she had made it out, that she had emerged victorious. But in the quiet of her apartment, in the stillness of the night, the truth was unavoidable: the past had never truly left her. It had always been there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for her to face it.

And now, it felt too heavy to carry.

Erin’s thoughts spiraled as the weight of everything pressed down on her. The uncertainty. The fear. The sense of impending collapse. She had tried so hard to move forward, to create a life that was hers and hers alone. But now, it felt like she was suffocating under the weight of her own expectations.

The emptiness inside her, the hollowness she had tried so hard to fill, seemed to consume her once again. She closed her eyes, trying to quiet the chaos in her mind. But the truth refused to stay silent.

What was the point of it all?

She had convinced herself she was free, but maybe she was still stuck. Maybe there was no escaping what she had been, what she had become. Maybe this was it—her life, forever. Alone. Broken.

Her phone buzzed again. But this time, she didn’t pick it up. This time, she knew the choice she had to make.

And just like that, it’s finally over…

The next thing she noticed was how light her body felt, as if she was floating. This is for the better…
