Chapter 5

Chapter 5: The Return of the Familiar

The days after her conversation with Mia felt like they had created a new space for Erin. She was starting to breathe again. She was starting to see herself, not as a reflection of Lucas, but as an individual with a life and purpose outside of him. It was empowering, if not a bit lonely at times.

But loneliness, as she learned, had a way of creeping in, filling the cracks when she wasn’t looking. The nights were the hardest. The absence of Lucas’s voice, the empty space on the couch where he used to sit, the quiet after the arguments had stopped—everything became amplified in the silence.

And so, it wasn’t entirely unexpected when Lucas’s message came through one evening.

She’d been pacing around her apartment, restless and uncertain, when the notification appeared. Lucas: “Please, just hear me out.”

Her heart dropped. She thought she was stronger. She thought she had made it through, that she had pushed past the emotional grip he had on her. But the message—the simple plea, the raw honesty in his words—pulled her in.

Lucas: “I’ve been thinking about everything, Erin. About us. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I can’t just let you walk away like this. You think it’s easy for me too? You think I don’t miss you? I can’t just let you go. I don’t want to lose you.”

Erin stared at the text, her breath catching in her throat. The words were like a lifeline, a tether pulling her back to him. She felt the familiar warmth of his voice seeping through the screen, reminding her of everything they had been. The good times. The laughter. The closeness. The hope that maybe, just maybe, things could get better. She was about to type something back when a new message appeared.

Lucas: “You can’t just leave me like this. You don’t know what it’s been like for me without you. I keep telling myself that if I just let you have your space, you’ll come back to me. But you’re slipping away, and I can’t do this without you. Please, Erin, I need you.”

Erin’s pulse quickened. His words were laced with vulnerability—an intimacy she couldn’t shake. She could almost hear the desperation in his voice, the way he always used to speak when he needed her, when he wanted her to save him.

Lucas: “I’ve been trying so hard, Erin. I really have. But you’ve been shutting me out. I know I messed up, but I’m trying. I’m begging you. Don’t leave me alone in this. Don’t leave me when I need you the most. I can’t be without you.”

Her fingers trembled as they hovered over the screen. His words were sinking in, soft and sharp all at once. She could feel her resolve beginning to falter. She had spent weeks convincing herself that walking away was the right thing. But now—now he was offering her something she couldn’t ignore. His need.

She blinked back the tears that stung her eyes. It wasn’t supposed to be this hard. It wasn’t supposed to feel like this. But her heart, the heart she thought had finally found peace, ached. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that maybe he had changed. That maybe she was the one thing that could make him whole again.

Her thumb hovered over the screen. She was still holding on to the belief that she was strong enough to resist, strong enough to keep the distance. But when the next message arrived, it shattered her.

Lucas: “Erin, I feel like I’m drowning without you. You were the one who kept me afloat. I don’t know how to live without you in my life. I love you. I always have. And I can’t lose you now. Not like this.”

The weight of his words crushed her. She could see it so clearly in her mind—the image of him, sitting alone, struggling, waiting for her. He made her feel like she was the only person who could save him. It was his version of love—constant, needy, demanding, but wrapped in the guise of tenderness and care.

Before she even realized what she was doing, her finger tapped the screen. “I miss you too.”

Later that night, Erin stood in front of the mirror, barely recognizing the woman staring back at her. Her mind was a whirlwind. She had let herself believe that she could break free, that she could stay strong. But the truth was, Lucas’s words had undone her. She had given him the power to twist her feelings into knots once again.

The phone rang again, almost immediately. She didn’t hesitate this time. She answered.

“Erin,” Lucas’s voice was soft, and his relief was palpable. “I knew you’d come back to me. I knew you still cared.”

“I do care, Lucas. But…” she trailed off, unsure how to finish. She wanted to tell him about the progress she had made, about how she had started to stand on her own two feet. She wanted to say that she was strong enough to leave this all behind.

But when his voice broke through her thoughts, her words faltered.

“Erin, I just—I can’t live without you. I’ve been so empty, so lost without you. You are everything to me, and now that I’ve realized how much I need you, I can’t imagine life without you. Please, don’t take that away from me.” His voice quivered as he spoke, the familiar desperation creeping back in.

Erin felt the familiar tug in her chest. She closed her eyes for a moment, a tear slipping down her cheek. She had promised herself this wouldn’t happen again. She had vowed to stand up for herself, to find a life outside of this, but Lucas… Lucas had a way of making her feel needed in a way no one else did. His love—however flawed—was all-consuming, and in that moment, it felt like the one thing she could hold on to.

She let out a shaky breath. “Lucas… I don’t want to hurt you. I really don’t.”

“You’re not hurting me. I love you, Erin. I love you so much, and I can’t lose you. Not again. Please, come back to me. Let’s fix this together.”

It felt like everything inside her snapped. The walls she had built, the boundaries she had set, all crumbled under the weight of his pleading. He had turned her fears, her doubts, into his own weapon, and once again, she was trapped in the cycle.

“I’ll come over,” Erin whispered, her voice barely audible. “I’ll come over.”

When she hung up, she immediately regretted it. She had given in. She had let him pull her back into the very hole she had fought so hard to climb out of. She had promised herself she wouldn’t go back to him, that she would stay strong. But in her weakness, Lucas had found his way back in. And now, Erin couldn’t escape.

Her heart ached, her mind a fog of confusion. She had fallen back into the familiar pull of his need, and once again, she was drowning in it.
