Chapter 10: The Calm Before the Storm

Isaku woke up to the soft hum of the city’s morning routine, the distant sounds of traffic, and the faint chirp of birds. It had been a long time since she had woken up feeling this calm, this at peace. The events of the previous night still played in her mind—the kiss that had caught her off guard, yet brought with it a sense of security she had never known.

She turned her head to the side, her gaze landing on Ryuji, who was still fast asleep beside her. His presence was comforting, like a shield against everything that lurked in the dark corners of her mind.

For a moment, she allowed herself to just watch him, to savor the peace that had settled in her heart since their quiet moment together. The warmth of his body next to hers, the steady rhythm of his breathing, made her feel as if they could be in this moment forever, untouched by the chaos they were about to face.

But she knew that peace wouldn’t last long. Keiya’s forces were still out there, hunting them down. The calm was only temporary, a brief lull before the storm.

She slipped out of bed quietly, careful not to wake Ryuji. As she moved to the window, her mind returned to their mission—finding Keiya and bringing an end to everything that had shattered her life. But now, there was something more, something she hadn’t allowed herself to acknowledge until now—Ryuji.

Her feelings for him had deepened beyond her expectations. She had always seen him as her protector, her bodyguard. But now, he was more than that. He was the one who had helped her find her strength again, the one who had stood by her side when everything seemed lost. And the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she wasn’t just fighting for revenge anymore. She was fighting for the future—for a future that could include him.

A soft rustling behind her interrupted her thoughts. She turned to find Ryuji sitting up in bed, rubbing his eyes. His hair was messy, his expression soft, yet filled with the kind of warmth that made her heart skip a beat.

"Good morning," he said, his voice thick with sleep but still carrying the same sense of comfort it always did.

Isaku couldn’t help but smile. "Good morning."

She moved over to the bed, sitting down next to him. Ryuji’s hand found hers almost instinctively, his fingers gently interlacing with hers as if he had done it a thousand times before.

"Are you okay?" Ryuji asked, his gaze scanning her face, his brow furrowed in concern.

"I am now," Isaku replied softly, squeezing his hand. "Last night... it helped. I think I needed it more than I realized."

Ryuji’s gaze softened, his thumb brushing against the back of her hand in a slow, soothing motion. "You don’t have to carry everything alone, you know. I’m here, and I always will be."

The words settled deep in her heart, reminding her that no matter how difficult things got, Ryuji was by her side. And that knowledge gave her the strength to face whatever came next.

But she knew they didn’t have much time. They couldn’t stay hidden forever. Keiya would come after them, and they had to be ready for it.

“We need to move,” Isaku said, her voice firm now. “Keiya’s forces will be on us soon. We can’t stay here.”

Ryuji nodded, his expression shifting from gentle concern to the determined look she knew all too well. “I’ll make the arrangements. We’ll be ready.”

The day passed quickly, filled with the urgency of preparation. They packed their belongings, made arrangements for their next steps, and prepared for the inevitable confrontation. Despite the looming danger, Isaku couldn’t help but feel a sense of hope building within her. With Ryuji at her side, she felt like they could face anything.

As the evening drew closer, Isaku found herself standing at the window again, her eyes scanning the horizon. There was a strange calmness to the night, as though the city itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to break.

Ryuji walked up beside her, his presence warm and steady. "You alright?" he asked, his voice low, filled with understanding.

Isaku nodded, but her heart was heavy with the weight of everything they were about to face. "I’m scared," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ryuji’s hand found hers again, and he gave it a reassuring squeeze. "I know you are. But I’m not going anywhere. We’re in this together."

Isaku looked up at him, her eyes filled with unshed tears. She knew the road ahead would be treacherous, filled with danger and uncertainty. But in that moment, standing beside Ryuji, she felt a sense of clarity she hadn’t felt in years. She was no longer alone. She had someone she could trust, someone who would stand by her through the storm.

And for the first time in a long time, she allowed herself to believe in the possibility of something better.

---

The next day, they were ready. They left the safety of the hideout and made their way toward their final destination—Keiya’s stronghold. The city stretched out before them, dark and looming, a place where danger lurked around every corner. But Isaku felt a sense of calm wash over her, knowing that Ryuji was with her.

They had come so far, and they weren’t stopping now.
