Rain poured relentlessly, drumming on the rooftops of the quiet city. Maya pulled her coat tighter around her as she hurried down the dimly lit street. Her heels clicked against the pavement, each step echoing in sync with the distant rumble of thunder. She cursed under her breath, annoyed at herself for not checking the weather forecast.

Just as she turned a corner, she collided with someone—solid, warm, and steady. She stumbled, but strong hands gripped her arms, steadying her.

“Easy there,” a deep, smooth voice said.

Maya looked up, her breath hitching as she met his eyes. They were an unusual shade of gray, intense and piercing. Water dripped from his tousled black hair, tracing the sharp lines of his cheekbones and jaw. His white T-shirt clung to his lean, muscular frame, soaked from the rain.

“Sorry,” she muttered, stepping back. Her heart beat a little too fast.

“No harm done,” he said, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than necessary. He tilted his head, a small smirk playing at the corner of his lips. “You should get out of the rain.”

“I’m trying,” she replied, her voice sharper than she intended. She didn’t like being caught off guard.

He raised an eyebrow, seemingly amused. “Then you might want to walk a little faster, Sunshine.” He glanced at the sky, rain dripping off his chin.

“Don’t call me that,” she shot back, narrowing her eyes.

He laughed, a rich, low sound that made something tighten in her chest. “Alright, Sunshine.” He gave her a wink before walking away, hands in his pockets, as if the rain didn’t bother him at all.

Maya stood there for a moment, watching him disappear into the haze of rain. Something about him lingered in her mind—his calm confidence, the way he looked at her like he knew something she didn’t.
