Chapter 8: Fractured Paths

The firelight danced across the walls of the small cave Lyric and Kyra had taken shelter in, casting fleeting shadows that seemed to twist and writhe in the flickering glow. Outside, the Hollow Expanse stretched on in oppressive silence, the darkness thicker than ever. The shards in Kyra’s satchel had settled, their glow dim but steady, though the faint hum still resonated faintly in the cave.

Kyra crouched near the fire, her fingers tracing the etched patterns on one of the shards. The second shard she had retrieved from Ashen Hold was larger, heavier, and its carvings were more intricate. The lines seemed to flow into one another, forming an almost organic design that defied reason. Every so often, it pulsed faintly beneath her touch, as though acknowledging her presence.

Lyric sat across from her, leaning against the stone wall with her arms crossed. Her eyes were distant, her posture tense. She had said little since they had escaped Ashen Hold, her silence heavy with unspoken thoughts. Kyra glanced at her, the weight of the moment pressing down on her.

“We need to talk,” Kyra signed, her gestures slow and deliberate.

Lyric’s gaze flicked to her, and for a moment, she said nothing. Then, with a sharp exhale, she uncrossed her arms and signed back. “About what? That we’re running headlong into something we don’t understand? That the Council will kill us if they find out? Or that these shards might be the end of us?”

Kyra set the shard down carefully on her lap and met Lyric’s gaze. “About what happens next,” she signed. “You’ve seen what these shards can do. You’ve felt the shadows. We can’t stop now—not when we’re this close.”

Lyric shook her head, her gestures sharper now. “Close to what, Kyra? All we’ve done is make ourselves targets. Those... things are growing stronger every time we get near a shard. What makes you think we can find the others before they find us?”

Kyra hesitated, her fingers stilling. The truth was, she didn’t have an answer. Every step deeper into the Expanse had brought more questions, more dangers. The shadows were becoming more aggressive, their presence more tangible. And yet, the pull of the signal was undeniable.

“Because if we don’t, no one else will,” she signed finally, her hands trembling. “If the Council knows about the shards, they’re not going to stop us—they’re going to bury the truth even deeper. They’ll let the shadows destroy everything just to keep their silence.”

Lyric’s jaw tightened, her fingers twitching at her sides. For a long moment, she didn’t respond, her expression unreadable. Then she sat forward, her gestures slower but no less intense. “You saw something in Ashen Hold, didn’t you? Something you’re not telling me.”

Kyra’s breath caught. She glanced down at the shard in her lap, its faint glow casting shadows across her hands. “I saw Earth,” she signed, her movements hesitant. “I saw what happened before the signal was sent. The shards... they hold memories. Pieces of a story. If we can find them all, maybe we’ll understand why the shadow is chasing the signal.”

Lyric frowned, her brow furrowing. “And what if understanding doesn’t help us stop it? What if we’re just making it stronger?”

Kyra shook her head, her gestures firm. “Then we need to find a way to sever the signal completely. But we can’t do that until we have all the pieces. We have to try, Lyric.”

The tension in the cave grew thick as Lyric stared at her, her lips pressed into a thin line. Then, with a slow, reluctant nod, she signed, “Where’s the next shard?”

Kyra let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She pulled out the map they had taken from Solace’s Edge and unfolded it carefully, spreading it across the ground between them. The map was old, its edges frayed and its surface faded, but the markings were clear. The ruins of Aethon were scattered across its surface like forgotten scars, each one marked with a name and a symbol.

Kyra’s finger traced a line from Ashen Hold to a site farther to the east, near the edge of the Hollow Expanse. “The Vault of Cindralis,” she signed. “It’s the last site marked on this map. If there’s another shard, it has to be there.”

Lyric’s eyes narrowed as she studied the map. “The Vault is deeper in the Expanse than anything we’ve seen so far,” she signed. “If the shadows were this strong at Ashen Hold, they’ll be worse there.”

Kyra nodded, her heart sinking. “I know. But it’s the only lead we have.”

Lyric leaned back, rubbing her temples. “We’ll need more supplies. Food, light, something to keep the shadows at bay.”

“And we’ll need to move quickly,” Kyra added. “The longer we wait, the more time the shadows have to grow stronger.”

Lyric nodded reluctantly, her gestures resigned. “We’ll leave at first light. But, Kyra, if this gets worse... if we get to the Vault and we can’t find a way to stop this...” She hesitated, then signed, “We might have to destroy the shards. All of them.”

Kyra’s stomach twisted at the thought, but she nodded. “If it comes to that, we will. But we have to try to save them first.”

The fire crackled softly between them, the only sound in the oppressive quiet. Kyra leaned back against the wall, exhaustion settling over her. The shard in her lap pulsed faintly, its hum blending with the low rhythm of her heartbeat.

As she drifted into a restless sleep, her mind filled with fragmented visions of Earth, of the signal, and of the shadow that pursued it across the stars.

The morning came slowly, the faint light of Aethon’s sun barely penetrating the heavy gloom of the Hollow Expanse. Kyra and Lyric packed their supplies in silence, their movements quick and efficient. The journey to the Vault of Cindralis would be the longest yet, and neither of them wanted to risk being caught unprepared.

As they stepped out of the cave and into the ashen landscape, Kyra glanced back one last time at the faint glow of the fire they left behind. It felt like a farewell, though to what, she wasn’t sure.

The path ahead was rough and treacherous, the ground uneven and riddled with jagged cracks that seemed to stretch endlessly into the darkness. The air grew colder the farther they went, the metallic tang growing sharper with every step.

Kyra kept her hand on her satchel, the warmth of the shards a constant reminder of their purpose. The hum was stronger now, resonating faintly through the fabric, as though the shards were aware of their destination.

Lyric walked a few paces ahead, her movements steady but cautious. She carried a long staff with a faintly glowing tip, a device designed to ward off the shadows. It wasn’t much, but it was the only protection they had.

The hours dragged on, the silence stretching endlessly around them. Kyra’s thoughts churned as they walked, her mind replaying the images she had seen in the shards. The woman with gray eyes, the shadow consuming the signal, the desperate launch into space—it all felt so distant, yet so immediate.

As the sun dipped lower on the horizon, casting the Expanse in an even darker hue, the ruins of the Vault of Cindralis came into view.

The structure was unlike anything Kyra had seen before. It was vast, its walls rising high into the gloom, covered in the same shifting patterns as the shards. Massive doors loomed at the entrance, their surfaces etched with intricate carvings that seemed to shimmer faintly in the dim light.

Kyra and Lyric stopped at the edge of the ruins, their breaths visible in the frigid air. Lyric turned to Kyra, her eyes narrowing. “Are you ready for this?” she signed, her gestures precise but heavy with meaning.

Kyra nodded, though her stomach churned with unease. “We don’t have a choice.”

Together, they stepped into the Vault, the darkness swallowing them whole.
