It all started innocently enough—or as innocently as things could with Wei WuXian involved.
One crisp morning, Wei WuXian lounged in the Jingshi, munching on a stolen apple, while Lan WangJi quietly worked on some sect paperwork.
“Lan Zhan,” Wei WuXian began, his tone dangerously cheerful, “don’t you think your brother and Jiang Cheng would make a great couple?”
Lan WangJi didn’t look up, his brush moving steadily across the paper. “No.”
Wei WuXian sat up, feigning shock. “What do you mean, no? They’re perfect for each other! Lan XiChen is all calm and understanding, and Jiang Cheng… well, Jiang Cheng needs calm and understanding.”
Lan WangJi paused for a moment, then resumed writing. “You are meddling.”
“Meddling?” Wei WuXian scoffed. “I’m helping. Think about it: Jiang Cheng is always so grumpy, and XiChen-xiong could balance him out. Plus, wouldn’t it be nice if your brother had someone?”
Lan WangJi gave him a look, his eyes calm but warning. “Do not interfere.”
But Wei WuXian was already scheming.
---
The next day, Wei WuXian cornered Lan XiChen in the library. “XiChen-xiong, don’t you think Jiang Cheng is, you know… interesting?”
Lan XiChen blinked, looking up from his book. “Interesting?”
“Yes! In that brooding, mysterious, ‘I have a tragic backstory’ kind of way,” Wei WuXian said, leaning against the table with a mischievous grin. “You like helping people, don’t you?”
Lan XiChen smiled gently. “I do, but—”
“Perfect! Jiang Cheng could use someone like you in his life. He’s grumpy, yes, but deep down, he’s got a good heart. You’d be great together!”
Lan XiChen frowned slightly, clearly trying to process Wei WuXian’s sudden matchmaking pitch. “Wei Gongzi, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I do not believe that is appropriate.”
Wei WuXian waved a hand dismissively. “Nonsense! Just talk to him more. You’ll see.”
---
Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng wasn’t spared either. Wei WuXian ambushed him during a training session at Lotus Pier.
“Jiang Cheng!” Wei WuXian shouted, jogging over with his usual energy.
“What do you want?” Jiang Cheng snapped, wiping sweat from his brow.
Wei WuXian smirked. “Oh, nothing much. Just wondering if you’ve noticed how… handsome Lan XiChen is?”
Jiang Cheng froze mid-drink from his water flask, choking. “What?!”
Wei WuXian patted his back. “I mean, he’s tall, graceful, kind—everything you’re not. Total yin-yang pairing, don’t you think?”
Jiang Cheng glared at him, his face turning red. “Are you insane?!”
Wei WuXian shrugged. “Just saying. You could do worse.”
Jiang Cheng stormed off, muttering something about strangling Wei WuXian.
---
Back at the Cloud Recesses, Lan WangJi finally had enough when Wei WuXian attempted to “accidentally” arrange a tea meeting between Lan XiChen and Jiang Cheng.
“Lan Zhan!” Wei WuXian whispered as they hid behind a screen, watching the two men awkwardly sip tea together. “Look at them! Don’t they look like a couple already?”
Lan WangJi pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling slowly. “Wei Ying, this must stop.”
“But Lan Zhan,” Wei WuXian whined, “they’re perfect! Just think, we’d have double family dinners, double the weddings, double the—”
“Wei Ying.” Lan WangJi’s voice was firm, and Wei WuXian finally quieted.
At that moment, Jiang Cheng stood abruptly, glaring at the screen. “Wei WuXian, I know you’re there! Stop meddling in my life!”
Lan XiChen, ever the peacemaker, stood as well. “Wei Gongzi, I appreciate your concern, but relationships cannot be forced.”
Wei WuXian stepped out sheepishly, Lan WangJi trailing behind him. “Alright, alright, I’ll stop. But you two would be cute together.”
Jiang Cheng growled, reaching for Zidian. “Get out before I kill you!”
As Wei WuXian darted away, laughing, Lan WangJi sighed, following at a much calmer pace.
Later, as they sat together in the quiet of the Jingshi, Lan WangJi finally spoke. “Wei Ying, promise me you will not meddle again.”
Wei WuXian grinned, leaning against him. “Fine, fine, I promise… for now.”
Lan WangJi gave him a look, clearly skeptical.
