The Cloud Recesses rarely hosted events as lively as the parent-teacher meeting for the junior disciples. Wei WuXian, ever the enthusiastic parent, dragged Lan WangJi into the classroom with a wide grin plastered on his face.
“Lan Zhan, do I look like a responsible parent?” Wei WuXian asked, brushing nonexistent dust off his robes. “I want to make a good impression.”
Lan WangJi glanced at him, his expression calm. “You look fine.”
“Fine?” Wei WuXian gasped dramatically, clutching his chest. “Lan Zhan, this is our son’s big day! I should look more than fine—I should look dashing, heroic, like the father of the year!”
“You are exaggerating,” Lan WangJi replied, though the corner of his lips twitched.
As they entered, the room was bustling with parents and teachers. Wei WuXian waved cheerfully at everyone, while Lan WangJi followed quietly, his serene demeanor drawing attention.
A-Yuan’s teacher greeted them with a warm smile. “Hanguang-Jun, Wei Gongzi! It’s wonderful to see you both. Please, have a seat.”
Wei WuXian plopped into the chair, looking around like an excited child. “So, how’s A-Yuan doing? Is he the best student you’ve ever had? Be honest—I can take it.”
The teacher chuckled. “A-Yuan is doing exceptionally well. He’s polite, hardworking, and very curious. However…”
Wei WuXian froze. “However? What ‘however’? Did he get into trouble? Was it the ink prank? I told him not to—oh wait, no, that was me as a kid. Never mind!”
The teacher smiled patiently. “It’s nothing major. It’s just that A-Yuan sometimes shares... interesting stories about his home life.”
Wei WuXian’s eyes sparkled. “Oh, like what? I bet it’s about how cool I am.”
The teacher cleared her throat, clearly trying not to laugh. “For example, he mentioned that Wei Gongzi once tried to cook lotus soup and... set the kitchen on fire.”
Wei WuXian’s grin faltered. “Oh. Uh. That might’ve happened.”
“And,” the teacher continued, “how Hanguang-Jun spent two hours cleaning soot off the walls in complete silence while Wei Gongzi apologized repeatedly.”
Lan WangJi gave Wei WuXian a pointed look. “Mn.”
Wei WuXian scratched the back of his neck, laughing nervously. “See? Teamwork! One of us causes the chaos, and the other fixes it.”
The teacher smiled. “It’s clear A-Yuan has a very loving home.”
Just as Wei WuXian was about to bask in the praise, a tiny voice piped up from behind. “Baba! Daddy!”
A-Yuan ran into the room, his face lighting up at the sight of his parents. He flung himself into Wei WuXian’s arms, who spun him around dramatically.
“A-Yuan! How’s our little genius?” Wei WuXian asked, grinning.
A-Yuan giggled. “The teacher said I’m doing great!”
Lan WangJi gently patted A-Yuan’s head. “Good work.”
“Did you tell them about the time Baba got stuck in the lotus pond?” A-Yuan asked innocently.
Wei WuXian froze. “A-Yuan, no! We agreed that stays between us!”
“But it was funny!” A-Yuan protested, laughing. “You said you were catching a fish, but you just fell in!”
The teacher coughed, trying to hide her laughter, while Lan WangJi raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable.
Wei WuXian groaned. “A-Yuan, you’re supposed to make us look good, not tell embarrassing stories!”
“Sorry, Baba,” A-Yuan said with a sheepish grin. “But it’s true!”
Lan WangJi looked at Wei WuXian, his calm voice laced with subtle amusement. “Perhaps next time, you should reconsider your fishing techniques.”
Wei WuXian sighed dramatically, throwing an arm around Lan WangJi’s shoulders. “Lan Zhan, I hope you know I’m only embarrassing myself because I love our son so much.”
Lan WangJi’s lips twitched, but he didn’t respond, simply holding A-Yuan’s hand as they walked out together.
As they left the classroom, Wei WuXian whispered to A-Yuan, “Alright, little radish, no more pond stories, okay? Let’s stick to how cool your Baba is.”
A-Yuan grinned. “But Daddy’s cooler!”
Lan WangJi gave a small nod. “Mn.”
Wei WuXian gasped, feigning betrayal. “Et tu, Lan Zhan?”
Their laughter echoed through the halls as the family walked off, leaving behind a very amused teacher and a room full of curious parents.
